Angry Anderson Cooper & Crew Attacked by Mob in Egypt
Quote:
CNN anchor Anderson Cooper and his crew were attacked Wednesday by an angry mob of pro-government supporters as chaos ensued and the Egyptian goverment unraveled. "Cooper said he was punched 10 times in the head as a pro-Mubarak mob surrounded him and his crew trying to cover demonstration," CNN producer Steve Brusk tweeted.

The network reported that even though attackers "pushed and shoved the CNN crew" in Tahrir Square in Cairo, no one was seriously hurt. Cooper later tweeted, "Got roughed up by thugs in pro-Mubarak crowd..punched and kicked repeatedly. Had to escape. Safe now." He had previously mentioned that he had been awake for four days in a row.

Cooper was one of several foreign correspondents who reported being attacked while covering the protests.

That is one scary assignment.
I wonder if he volunteered to go or was he ordered?

Oh, no! That is so frightening!

I did see how he said on Twitter he hadn't slept in four days. That's no good! So unhealthy! I hope he and his crew are able to make it through ok!

Last night there was a noisy mob gathered beneath the hotel balcony where Anderson was taping a segment for CNN. At one point the crowd (which Anderson described as President Mubarak's rent-a-mob) was throwing rocks up at them.

Jewel, it isn't dumb at all. Journalists who head into war zones, natural disasters and areas of unrest have no illusions or expectations of safety. Like members of the military, they know that they are risking their lives and do so willingly in order to do their jobs.

There isn't a year that goes by that journalists are killed and imprisoned while on the job. According to the Committee to Protect Journalists, since 1992, 849 journalists have been killed and 145 are currently in prison.

Yes I know all that. I personally think it is dumb to risk your life on something this hot and volitile. Being up in a building or something is one thing but down right in the mob? Yes I do understand them willingly to risk their lives for it I really do but sometimes it is better to not lose your life for a story.
Im glad they are safe

I don't view it as "just a story". I admire Anderson Cooper for going there to show Americans what is REALLY going on in the world. Who knows? The next war we may be involved in could be in Egypt, we'll see it coming.

The people in our country are not employees of a business, and they should NOT be treated as such. Moreover, our country is NOT a business, and it shouldn't be run as if it were!

When I saw him over there the other nite I about had a heart attack--I was so worried he'd be hurt. Yes, I do love my Anderson.

They are not all safe.

Many journalists from all over the world were attacked in Egypt over the past few days.

It isn't just about Cooper and CNN - every journalist in the area is at risk.

Not surprised. Kind of like getting blown away covering a hurricane.

Americans were advised to leave the area for a reason...

If journalists didn't put themselves in places like this, we would have to rely on state news. I have a feeling we wouldn't even know about this turmoil if that were the case.

Foucault rocks.

All hell is breaking out there (again) right now but Anderson (and hopefully all other journalists) are safe in their hotel rooms. Poor Anderson is never going to get any sleep at this point.
