Introducing Google Public DNS
I posted this thread in the news section but thought perhaps it should be here instead.

The goal of Google Public DNS is to benefit users worldwide while also helping the tens of thousands of DNS resolvers improve their services, ultimately making the web faster for everyone.

http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2009/...ublic-dns.html

I'm away from home right now but when I get back next week I think I may try this out.

I'm also hoping fastfreddie1959 has weighed in on this by then just in case I need help!

Thumbs up I only have 1 issue with DNS...
I hope there not like open DNS where they decide what comes thru and what does not.
I don't like servers who decide what i can download or not.
My puter and i will download what ever i please..
Lets hope that google does not fall into this category...

I'm just now learning about this stuff and like what I'm reading so far. What advantages have you experienced using these as opposed to using your own ISP's DNS?

Thumbs up Ive never seen a speed increase of page loading.
But i also don't want some domain server blocking me from certain sites which they
deem unsafe.
That's the downside to switching.
In all honesty i don't see any advantage to switching unless of course you have children..
Then you can block certain sites so your children cannot access them.

Update
fastfreddie1959 & Defenderofthefaith, I got some time to do a bit of research on open DNS and found a benchmark tool that was recently created, namebench. I've done all three tests on both my DH's laptop and my PC and have come to the conclusion that a person could be mislead by these results if he/she frequently cleans out cache and history. For example on my PC on which I keep quite a large amount of cache and history all three of my tests put just one ahead of my own DNS provider, BrightHouse, and most of the rest were quite a ways behind. On my husband's laptop where the cache & history are cleaned daily DH's laptop KILLED all of the competition. If I hadn't read that they use your history and cache to create these benchmarks I would have thought there was something really odd in our home.

Here it is if you'd like to check it out:

http://code.google.com/p/namebench/

Anyway the long and the short of it is that in my situation, what I have is very close to being the best around. It would be interesting to hear other people's results.

I was very willing to go with open DNS but after completing the benchmark reports there is no upside to it for me. But from what I've read there are many, many people that it can help.
