PA Arabs in Gaza Campaigning for Barack Obama(Arutz Sheva)

(IsraelNN.com) A Palestinian Authority newspaper reported on Sunday that Arab residents of Gaza are randomly calling Americans at home in hopes of persuading them to vote for Democratic candidate Senator Barack Obama in next month's US presidential election. The article in Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, first noted and translated by Palestinian Media Watch, quotes a young man from the Hamas-controlled Gaza region as saying, "We dial random numbers and try to call people [in the United States] without knowing their identity or their affiliation...." He reportedly uses "Internet sites that allow making free calls... in order to use them for the campaign supporting Obama." The Al-Hayat Al-Jadida article said, "Most of the Palestinians feel hatred towards USA, whose administrations have always stood by Israel...." The Gaza-based Obama campaigner, Ibrahim Abu Jayyab, "said that a large number of Palestinians dislike their activity..." Those PA residents "do not see any difference between the American politicians [Obama and Republican candidate Sen. John McCain] because of the hostility that they feel towards America," the report explained. "But [Abu Jayyab's] hope is that their activity will have some impact [in support of Obama]," according to the newspaper report.

Al-Qaida supporters suggested in a Web site message this week they would welcome a pre-election terror attack on the United States as a way to usher in a John McCain presidency. The message, posted Monday on the password-protected al-Hesbah Web site, said if Al-Qaida wants to exhaust the United States militarily and economically, "impetuous" Republican presidential candidate Sen. McCain is the better choice because he is more likely to continue the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. "This requires presence of an impetuous American leader such as McCain, who pledged to continue the war till the last American soldier," the message said. "Then, Al-Qaida will have to support McCain in the coming elections so that he continues the failing march of his predecessor, Bush." Intelligence Group, based in Bethesda, Md., monitors the Web site and translated the message.

Actually, I looked into it, and it isn't really hilarious at all. Here's more:

For months, Ibrahim Abu Jayyab has been working through the night, telephoning American voters at random to plead in broken English that they support his favourite candidate. Never mind that most of the people Mr. Abu Jayyab calls don't even know where the Gaza Strip is, much less understand why this man with heavily accented English crackling down the phone line should care about the U.S. presidential race.

Mr. Abu Jayyab, who speaks little English and at first left only practised messages on telephone answering machines, has since enlisted the help of 15 friends to use computer VOIP programs, including iCall, to randomly call U.S. telephone numbers. They frequently meet in a nearby Internet café, where they work in fear that Hamas forces or even more radical groups will burst in. Of the dozens of calls they'll make each night between midnight and 4 a.m. - early evening in most of the United States - Mr. Abu Jayyab and his friends say they may only speak to one out of every 10 households. They've encountered answering machines, small children, and often people impatient with their Arabic-accented English.

I'll give them credit for their willingness to do something.


They don't sound like the generic "arab" or generic "palestinian" that we stereotype - in fact, they sound like the type of young reformers that we ought to be listening to and assisting.


I'd say too that it shows just how aware of the US - our politics, our news, our culture - the rest of the world is.

After watching Obama's speech last night I've come to the conclusion that there are only two reasons why someone would not vote for Obama:

1. You make over $250,000.00

you forgot #3. and that is they don't mind getting taxed on the health insurance their employer pays for them, and when the the employer cancels the insurance, they're looking forward to using the $5,000 tax credit mccain is offering to buy $12,000 worth of family health insurance and forking over the other $7,000 out of pocket.

I think there is a clear intent however to try and suggest that Obama = stereotypical arab terrorist image.


The original article is pretty innocuous about it, and the one I linked to makes is an even more straight feature story.

There's nothing sinister about the actual phone calls or the people ebhind them.


What IS sinister is the vague "rather disturbing" statement - because it suggests something, a connection, rather than coming out and being clear and explicit.

Is it disturbing because DOTF fears a 3 Am phone call from someone speaking English poorly, or is it because DOTF believe Obama will deliver a suitcase nuke to downtown tel aviv?

I personally think it's incredible that the rest of the world is taking such an interest in this election. It clearly shows that they're pulling for the US, and want us to make a comeback after the last 8 disastrous years. We've historically been a world leader - it's time we resumed that position with an honorable, capable, intelligent president. I have truly never felt so encouraged about the future of this country as I do now.
