I feel like a HORRible mother!
I accidentally left my flat iron on snce last night and my 4 year old picked it up. Luckily he only burnt his thumb. He has had it in a cup of water for 2 hours now.

Any time I try and get his hand out of their he starts screaming and shaking his hand.

Any tips to make it feel better? Other than special treats!

He did fall asleep (while I was holding him like a baby, rubbing his head and singing to him)

I got his hand out dried it and put burn cream on it. But then he woke up and now it is back to the cup/

I feel like an idiot!

Put some honey on it... it takes the sting out right away.

You are not a horrible mother - accidents happen and it could have been much worse. to you and your little guy.

Do you have an aloe? I burnt my face last night but found some moisturizer with aloe which helped a lot. I think the milk is a good idea too... at least I remember it feeling good on the bee stings as a young child (around his age), which I know is different, but it is still pain.

Aloe helps. I burn myself on a regular basis ( I'm accident prone) and usually have some kind of aloe burn ointment around. I have heard ( as mentioned) that honey helps as well. Or egg whites, sounds odd but it might help out.

A flat iron is something that straitens your hair, kinda like a curling iron.

He is feeling much better now. I had some burn ointment in the first aid kit. I put that on him.

The milk was too drink, haha

I burned myself on the oven two nights ago and blistered my middle finger on my right hand. I had to keep it in ice water on and off for about 6 hours. After the sting was gone, I can't even see a blister. I think that is the best treatment.

Sorry the lil guy burned himself.

I totally burned my whole hand with a hot skillet (dummie me) and spent all night with my hand in an ice bucket of ice water. I should have blistered, but never did. Also kept my hand from hurting at all. I remember I slept with my hand over the bed with the ice bucket on the floor. I would wake up when I moved in my sleep and my hand was out of the bucket!

Hope your little guy feels better SOON!

There is nothing better than cold water for burns. Since the skin holds the heat, you need to cool it for relief. Anything that blocks the pores (greasy ointments) makes it burn worse. I have also read that whole milk has amino acids that relieve burns (cold milk compresses, not drinking it). Funny you should say that now, we are treating my FIL as we speak because he was canning tomatoes and spilled boiling water on his hand.
Good luck to the little guy- TLC works wonders!

No, a horrible mother would have used it to burn her child on purpose...

Kinda like when mine branded my leg as a kid....
put the weiner tongs in the gas flame till they glowed, opened 'em wide & closed on my leg

You forgot, that's all.
He's still exploring
Accidents will happen.

He'll get over it.

Thanks Francis, I didn't know that. It wasn't your fault, it was an accident.

OMG X that's horrifying.

I steamed my fingers back in 1986 & I'll never forget it. I was making corn on the cob in the microwave & I had it tightly covered with plastic wrap & it formed a steam bubble. I slowly lifted it & the steam came out & melted 3 fingers. It was my pinky finger, ring finger & middle finger. The ring finger was the worse, the skin almost dripped off from it. I was given pain pills to helpme deal with it & I never did something so stupid again.

I think something like that happens to every kid and of course we as mothers blame ourselves. It's an accident and accidents will occur no matter how careful we try to be.
