A year is not nearly long enough but if a year is the legal maximum, a second less would be an atrocity, and judicial abuse in my view. I hope the prosecutor refuses a plea "deal" and insists on going for trial and the maximum, pitifully little as it is.

Wonder why the media is bent on protecting Christine Abrams by not publishing a photo?

Looks like that selfish, heartless woman is one of those people who thought that a dog was a toy. She played with it and posed with it as long as she was in the mood, then walked away when she got tired of it.

Quote:
Prosecutors are deciding whether to file formal charges against Abrams. Letters from as far away as Connecticut and Texas have appealed for prosecutors to pursue the maximum penalty, which would carry up to five years in prison and $5,000 in fines.

But prosecutor Wayne Holmes said charges are based on the quality of evidence and laws that are set by the state legislature -- which can give citizens the perception that the court system doesn't take animal abuse cases seriously.

Thanks, Annulla. I'm glad to hear the max is more than one measly year, even if her lawyers suppose the most the dreadful creature will actually get is one year. To me that means 5 x 365 + at least one leap day and not one second less is what the prosecutors should be asking.

What a shame penalties aren't dealt out in the same coin as the crime (in this and SO many other cases)! In a cage, with food and water in sight is what she deserves. Of course. And since we're not monsters, once she has fallen unconscious, take her back to her cell and revive her. That's more than she deserves but gives her years to contemplate her punishment, since I doubt she's ever going to contemplate her monstrous act as anything but c'est la vie.

How could you leave your animal in a cage with no food and water to die and not think you did anything wrong?! That was just horrible.

Ya know it is sad to say but this kind of thing is happening more and more! Wit people losing their homes left and right due to foreclosure they are finding they can't take the animals with them and are just leaving them there. I mean come on people at least take them to a shelter or try to find them a home.

I don't care what I would have to do if my animals couldn't come I wouldn't even consider going. I would sleep in a park before I would ever do that to one of my critters!

And to think that a large bag of dog food was just several feet away from the poor dog! You know he could smell it, what misery the poor thing was in, and what a cute dog! I hope she serves every bit of 5 years and never takes another animal into her home again after she gets out.

And yet, in the thread on living in parking lots (economic downturn related), where the woman did exactly that, we have OLS members calling for her to take the dogs to a shelter instead of living in the rough with her, where (supposedly) they'll have a "chance" to be adopted instead of killed. . . Next we'll have people calling for kill-or-adopt stations for the children of the economic fall out.

I havent read that thread yet, but I would do exactly the same thing with my dogs if I had to! That woman is a wonderful lady for staying with her dogs.

At least she has to stay a year in jail for killing her dog. Police officers can kill innocent black men anytime and serve no time. If that's the case a year is too long.
