Republicans accuse Democrats of moving too slowly on spy bill
after reading through the article, i wonder if this was the reason for moving slow:

Quote:
Democrats objected to provisions in the GOP bill that grant the attorney general and the director of national intelligence the authority to approve all wiretaps, even if one caller is in the United States, with minimal court oversight. The Democratic bills required the FISA court to oversee the process.

The administration initially proposed to give the authority only to the attorney general, but agreed to add the director of national intelligence after Democrats objected to putting more power in the hands of embattled Attorney General Alberto Gonzales.

Wait a minute.....are these the same republicans who have obstructed almost everything that the democratic majority has brought up since the last election? And now they are complaining about 'moving to slowly?'

Are they also the same Republicans who were gung ho in lockstep about invading Iraq?

'Cause we all know how right they were about that one.

Maybe some caution is warranted, after all.

How in the hell does this administration think adding the Director would be an improvement.

The Democrats folded up and passed it in the Senate, let's see if the Democrats in the House have more cajones. What the Dems seem to have forgotten is the law is completely unnecessary. Laws are already in place that allow the wiretapping subject to FISA.

Why are the Democrats working to legalize Bush's transgressions? I imagine there is a provision hidden deep within the bill that will exempt Bush from his breaking the law for the past six years. By the time the Democrats are through all of Bush's impeachable offenses will be forgiven. We need a third party.

Edited: We don't necessarily need a third party, just an opposition party.

Anyone interested in MoveOn's campaign, you can sign the petition at the link below:

Here's a sample message to send to your friends:

Subject: Don't let Congress off the hook for letting Bush wiretap our phone calls

Quote:
Hi,

The Democratic-controlled Congress did the unthinkable on Saturday night: They gave President Bush and Attorney General Alberto Gonzales more unchecked power to wiretap Americans without a warrant. Yes, that's the same Attorney General who is currently mired in scandal and probably committed perjury on this very issue.

Enough is enough. We have to send a strong message to Congress that there is no trade-off between fundamental liberties and security. Preserving our Constitution is essential to our security—we can't lead on freedom around the world when we're actively undermining the rule of law at home.

I signed onto this petition demanding that Congress reverse this capitulation to Bush and the politics of fear. Can you join me? Just click here:

Thanks!

Broad new surveillance powers approved by Congress this month could allow the Bush administration to conduct spy operations that go well beyond wiretapping to include -- without court approval -- certain types of physical searches of U.S. citizens and the collection of their business records, Democratic congressional officials and other experts said.

The dispute illustrates how lawmakers, in a frenetic, end-of-session scramble, passed legislation they may not have fully understood and may have given the administration more surveillance powers than it sought.

and I thought the new Democratic majority was going to fight the good fight.
