I don't have vision insurance for anything but the exam, though.
So, do you get your eyeglasses at a chain? Where? And about how much do you pay?
TIA!!

I usually only wear contacts, but I need to replace my ten year old glasses.

Sam's Club/Wally-Mart usually have the best prices for those individuals without insurance.
Hope that helps. Bill | ||

I would never recommend Lenscrafters since i used to work there and even with discounts they are the most expensive place to go. You pay for the fancy equipment, one hour service and mall rent.

I just went to WalMart for my glasses. The exam, new lens & frame cost $240 (without insurance).

I use America's Best.
$80 for two pairs of glasses and the eye exam. You can't beat that. When I get tired of my frames, I just go get two new pairs of glasses! They carry brand names too. I'll buy one brand name and a cheapo.

Walmart is the cheapest I have found.

I have worked with a few organizations to help get eyeglasses for people who were short on funds. I had to research this company before we could recommend them to any clients. I found their customer service is very good, and the glasses are better than some "chain" shops.

Costco is where I went until I got vision insurance. For VERY nearsighted people they have the thinnest lenses that are available on the market. Good prices also.

Although you might have had luck with them I think Americ's Best is the WORST in the industry. They use really low quality materials and close out frames and have no warrenty on many things. I have been in the optical industry for over 10 years now and would NEVER go there. Chains are almost always cheaper then a private practice. The best price for quality IMHO is Walmart, Shopko or Costco. PLus they have the best warranties. For lenses, Single vision (meaning no bifocal), expect to pay 40-50 pair for plastic. Frames range from as low as $20 on up at many places. The internet cheapo places are great for a second pair, but I wouldn't obtain a primary pair there.

When my husband broke my glasses last year, I decided to try America's Best. For less than 200 bucks I got two pair of glasses, with the thin lenses. Usually I pay well over double that at other places because I'm a "coke bottle lense" person. I've got no complaints.

EBAY! Can't beat the cost of frames on Ebay, but you have to purchase the lenses at a retail place. I'm not sure, but there may even be Ebay sellers who also sell the lenses with the right prescription. Certainly worth checking out.

Well maybe my beef with America's best is an induetry thing. I have repaired many a pair of glasses for people who had no warranty from them and were told they had to buy a whole new pair rather then just have a simlpe repair done.
Generally if you are paying that little for glasses and the frames are stylish they are either a low quality frame or the manufacture no longer makes it and therefore if it breaks, you are stuck.
