It is the Season Of Peeps here.

First, a big THANK YOU to Mynxdog for sending me fertile eggs from her Sex-Link hens and a Blue Silkie Rooster she rescued from the Lower 9th Ward after Katrina. She found Rudy swimming for his life, brought him home, cleaned him off and gave him his own harem. Rudy thinks she’s God.

So, from me and my peeples, here are our photos.


THE HATCH began at 12:30 AM Thursday.


It was a race between two good eggs, “goldie chick” and “blue chick”. Goldie chick hatched first, methodically breaking off bits of her shell until she had snipped off the wide end. With a few mighty, but exhausting stretches, she pushed the 2 pieces apart, rolled out and proceeded to push herself all over the incubator; causing (egg) heads to roll in all directions.



Well, hello there!

1 AM, a small 4-toed Blue Silkie broke free.


After 2 hours, I lifted the cover to get a good look and goldie chick raced over to me and tried to climb onto my face. I think she’s imprinted on me. If I put my hand in there, palm down, she runs to hide under it.

This morning, after giving them a sip of water, I placed the 2 chicks in the brooder, where they promptly fell asleep under the warming light, occasionally to arise cheeping loudly, until the next bout of total exhaustion kicked in … about 30 seconds later.







7:30 AM – the 3rd chick has escaped her shell.

You can see the 5 toes of a true silkie.

8:30 AM – 2 very black silkies, with black skin and 5 toes just hatched.









It’s 1:30 PM, where has the time flown. There are now 7 chicks in the brooder tub and 6 still drying off in the incubator. I didn't know it at the time but the brown chick in the upper left corner is Russell. Such a good boy.

3:30 PM – 16 chicks in brooder.

You can see the beautiful mahogany Rooster we kept, RUSSELL, on the left











RUSSELL has his head high watching over everyone.




There are about 6 more eggs yet to hatch ...

They're so cute! And to answer Kiss, they'll be frying size at six to eight weeks old. But they have more flavor if you wait till they're over three months. We always had stewed laying hen, because we sold the nice tender chickens....that is the bad part about living on a farm, you know your food was cute and friendly
