Actually, the giveaways ARE for real.
Money, cars, etc. are given away all year. Just read the fine print, don't subscribe to any magazines unless you want them, and remember that you haven't won anything until that silver-haired guy knocks on your door. Which he actually does, with award in hand. Met him in person not long ago and had a nice chat. Unfortunately, it wasn't because he knocked on my door.
