GOP: "We'll 'bury' Iraq veteran running for Congress
GOP Says It Will 'Bury' Name-Calling Candidate

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn...073001092.html

Quote:
Paul Hackett doesn't fit conventional political profiles. He is a Marine Reservist and an Iraq war veteran who opposed the war before the U.S. invasion and remains a harsh critic of President Bush's policy there. He is also a Democrat battling to win a special House election in Ohio in a district that has been in Republican hands for more than three decades.
Quote:
Hackett told USA Today that Bush's taunting line, "Bring 'em on!" was "the most incredibly stupid comment I've ever heard a president of the United States make." He also told the newspaper that, while he was willing to put his life on the line for the president, "I've said that I don't like the son-of-a-[expletive] that lives in the White House."
Quote:
Said National Republican Congressional Committee spokesman Carl Forti: "We decided to bury him."

I know there was another thread about candidate Hackett recently, but this one is coming down to the wire. From other reports I have read, the GOP has tried to "Swift Boat" Hackett by claiming that he never really saw combat in Iraq.

The GOP is more supportive of Chickenhawks. They like to vote for people that make war, not fight them.

Here is another article on the race. It mentions the interesting Internet ad that his campaign published.

http://www.gulflive.com/opinion/miss...2111196920.xml

Did anyone see this?

Quote:
To paraphrase the ad: On Oct. 25, 2004, Jean Schmidt was treated to an expensive meal by Ciron Pharmaceuticals. Paul Hackett ate a meal ready-to-eat with his Marines. That night, Jean Schmidt accepted two Cincinnati Bengals seats from the same company, prompting an ethics investigation. Paul Hackett flew into Fallujah in defense of his country.
The RNC has since donated $285,000 to Schmidt to run ads on TV around the clock until election day. Each voter in the district will see the ad an average of 18 times. Where is the DNC?

I also think it is beyond disgusting that conservative talk radio hosts are attacking Mr. Hackett's service record because they don't agree with his politics. What a way to support our troops.

Quote:
Another sign of desperation is that southern Ohio right-wing talk show hosts have begun to "Swift Boat" Hackett. They do this despite his being a family man -- a father of two young children -- who volunteered to serve in Iraq. They have questioned whether his service (which stretches more than 10 years) was politically motivated. They say he is misleading people when he calls himself a veteran because he was not in enough active-fire situations for their tastes. Some have even said that were he a good soldier, he would not have returned home.

if the dnc is going to sit on their duffs and play tiddly winks until days before the election and then come out swinging...... it ain't gonna work!

what i find soooo ironic is that the support our troops slogan so prevalent coming out of the white house, is denegrating this particular veteran because he's a democrat.

if he were a republican would they be touting his bravery? his service to the country? the honor he bestowed? of course they would. but because he's a democrat he's pretty much a disgrace to the uniform!

is there something wrong with this picture?

There's definitely something wrong with the republican picture of veterans, but the staunch republican voters buy into it without question. Maybe someday they'll figure it out. Bush&Co did the same thing to John McCain, Max Cleland and John Kerry - and it worked every time!

This is a heavily entrenched republican district. It will be incredible if Paul Hackett wins this special election. According to the news links provided above, Schmidt has the political background and backing and a huge cash advantage. Thanks to the internet ad comparing Oct.25, 2004 for the two candidates, money started coming in to Hackett's campaign. Suddenly, there was something approaching parity for the two campaigns.

Now the National Republican Congressional Committee has stepped in with the purchase of $285,000 of tv ad time for Schmidt. Think they're worried? Think money can't buy votes? Think character assassination doesn't destroy candidates? Think republicans care only about winning at any cost? ("Where are we going and why are we in this handbasket?")

I think we'll all be watching this election on Tuesday.

i don't care if the district is republican, they're not blind and they're not deaf. if they can't see and hear the smear tactics and know this is the only way the gop can win, then they are one big sorry excuse for human beings.

There is a chance for backlash here. Everyone loves Marines, and the talk show hosts are walking a fine line when they attack our veterans. I think it is a turn off for most people.

One thing working in favor of Hackett's campaign though is he is viewed as an underdog. With the big volunteer force on the ground he has ammassed, in combination with people's uneasiness with the direction the war has taken, it makes for a possible upset.

Even if he doesn't win Tuesday, he has laid the groundwork for a campaign for the same seat in 2006. :)

I agree that they're not blind or deaf, but how about brain-washed? (I thought of a couple of other adjectives, but I'll be nice.)

Have you seen any conservatives in this thread discussing either candidate or the smear campaign? They won't support the veteran because he's a democrat and they can't support the republican because she's another one on the "payroll" of corporate interests. (Or else they're waiting for some right-wing pundit to give them some "talking points".) So they'll pretend all is well and if Bush&Co are for her, so are they.

no

i would like to give them more credit than that in the 'thinking for yourself' department rather than a replay mouthpiece of some loud mouth talk show or rag mag!
