Police dogs and dozens of cops are scouring Staten Island for two boys, ages 2 and 4, who became separated from their mother on Father Capodanno Boulevard during Hurricane Sandy. The boys' and mother's identities have not been released, but police confirmed they are from Staten Island.
The children disappeared after their mother's car became submerged just before 6 p.m. in or near the 400-block of Capodanno Boulevard in South Beach, police said, a stretch of road fronted by beach and marsh on one side and houses on the other.
By Tuesday afternoon, officers were combing the area and draining a marsh off Capodanno Boulevard, where they discovered and removed a blue SUV and silver minivan, but not the boys, SILive.com reported. The search was ongoing Wednesday morning.
Five people are confirmed to have died on Staten Island as a result of Hurricane Sandy, the NYPD confirmed Wednesday, including an off-duty police officer, a 13-year-old girl, and a father and son. So far, the city's death toll is 22.
