Maybe there will be a winner in this bunch!

I am hoping so, but I still have concerns about committing to a schedule. When you tell your bestie that you will be there when she needs you during a horrible crisis time, you can't just say, "oopsie poodle, I'm doing something else right now." The fit could hit the shan at any point in Raleigh.

The man and I talked about me self contracting again over dinner. I realize that there are things that I don't know that I don't know, but I still find it hard to believe I have to hire a guy to hire a plumber, to hire an electrician, to hire carpenters, to hire tillers... Most of these "companies" seem to be only one guy who hire subcontractors for particular jobs.

Not sure why I couldn't learn more about each piece of the puzzle and hire the tradesmen myself.

It certainly is bad timing for you, due to you wanting to be there for your friend. I hope that she has some other support too, since you live some distance from her and can't be there as often as you would like.

I wish I was closer to her, for any number of reasons. But now would be especially good. At least I can talk with her and let her decompress. A good venting helps a lot sometimes.

The 2 fellows I saw today seemed okay. I am more inclined to go with the one I had actually used before based on 'first' impressions. But I'll see another tomorrow and wait for the next set of estimates.

Not that the estimates were the problem before - the figures were good, I just didn't trust the dudes.

One estimate in. A little more than the last set of three, but doable.

I have a little fun project in mind for the next couple of days. I guess I can't just sit around the whole week.

They do say that you get what you pay for.

Do all of these guys have references, or is there a site you can go to get honest reviews?

I search everywhere and anywhere I can find to see what there is to know about them, Angie's List, etc. The most important place is the Virginia board of licenses. I am only interested in guys/companies that have been here in good standing for a number of years.

Completed my little project. I built sidewalls for my trailer from the plywood packing in the vanity box. I used leftover redwood deck stain from before we got the special deck overhaul about three years ago.

The plywood isn't very sturdy, but that's okay because I didn't want a lot of extra weight on the trailer. All it cost was sweat and lots of it. I used it with the mow yesterday before I finished the front piece. Worked well.

Happy face.

That looks very nicely done! Good for you, your know-how and your willingness to get the job done!

Thank you. Again, you give me too much credit with the "know-how" part. I had nothing to lose on this one, so why not try?

I always feel so butch using my power tools. Especially the lil nail gun. kaPOW! kaPOW! None of that silly trying to hold a nail and hammer it stuff.

I have now received 2 estimates. Making me wait like this does not inspire confidence. The third guy is just about out of the running.

Were those 2 estimates good ones and did you like either of the guys?

I firmly believe that you have a lot of know-how!

Both were a bit higher than some others, but reasonable. I am liking the guy I used before the most, actually. If I don't self contract, that is. The more shows and videos I watch, the more I think I should handle it myself.

I should contact HGTV and DIY Networks and pitch it as a show. LOL
