Thank you Karen

Time to get out there and buy wrapping paper, decorations, or any other seasonal item for next time.

Also a good time to hit the thrift shops as donations roll in this time.

I am looking for alternatives to cable TV. Does anyone use an antennae for good reception? I have Netflix.

Also, since I won't have cable will need separate high speed internet.

I live in Western Massachusetts.

Thanks and happy frugal, yet fun, New Year!

I personally have a Mohu leaf antenna and can get signals from as far away as 50 miles, sometimes, it sort of depends on weather and sunspots I guess. But you should check out http://lifehacker.com/how-to-choose-...-hd-1569752514 and do a search at antenna.org to see what stations might be available for you. If you already have nexflix, I am assuming you already have high speed internet. I also have a Roku, but a lot of the channels I watch with it, you need to subscribe to cable or satellite to use. I am not ready to cut the cord just yet since I am addicted to my DVR. If all you want from the cable company is internet, and you are about to "unbundle" you may be shocked at how much they want. You might be better off to just downgrade to the lowest level cable they offer.

My wins

Thanks Cajun_Mum!
Looks like I still need a roof one just to get the basic channels.

We will be replacing the high speed internet.
Will see what they have for cheap packages too.

We got one from Amazon. Went from having like 2 channels, plus PBS to 20 channels or so. Love it because I can now pick up Laff TV and that is pretty much the channel that it is on. Sadly, we can't pick up our local CBS channel, which is about 8 miles from us. Not sure why. Has a 50 mile radius on it.

I think it was this one, but its been so long I can't remember.

with the antenna we tried several different ones and then ended up purchasing an amplifier at Radio Shack that made a difference in our reception, at the time they had 2 choices at the store I only see one on their website now which is https://www.radioshack.com/products/...gnal-amplifier similar to this one. We put it in the basement because it does plug in and it also has an adjustment on it that you might need to change, we have ours just above the lowest setting. We just ran the cable in from outside and went to this thing before going out to the TV's. It also makes a difference which direction your antenna is pointed and the terrain.

Thank you Karen and buckyandtux!
Lots of research to do as we have hills all around us. Not that we are far from "the big city" though.

I really wish we had a Goodwill here, there is a Salvation Army, but I have never been into it. Should go in and see what it is all about.

Question
Can I ask what is the purpose of this thread? There's no info as to what it's supposed to be about.

Is it posting the best thrift store bargain you purchased?
Is it for telling everyone about the next latest greatest app that pays you?
Is it about money saving sites?
Is it about how to use a cashback website, a special cashback promo, promocode discount, a promocode for free shipping, a rebate, and special sale to buy 10 of an item instead of buying 1 of that item which results in the store paying you money? <Yeah I have done this, more than once even!)

(sorry if this comes off as grumpy, I'm just trying to save a buck and learn some new tips and tricks)
