LOTR Magazine Subscription "Win" or "Spam/Scam"?
OK, this is kind of long but I think it's basically a scam. Did anyone else receive this? I did enter a Star Trek sweep for him but this just doesn't look right. So I responded kinda mean to the e-mail saying I didn't want any subscription nor did I order one! Then I got another response saying I won it and that they go for a pretty penny. So I've pasted all the e-mails that went back and forth. Kinda long, but what do you all think? Junk? Because I'm about to respond with another mean e-mail! Thanks.

Hello, John

Thank you for registering with Decipher! Your registration will allow you to
log in to all of these Decipher websites:

The Lord of the Rings Fan Club (www.lotrfanclub.com)
Star Trek Fan Club (www.startrekfanclub.com)
The Decipher Store (shop.decipher.com)
Boy Crazy! (www.boycrazy.com)

Then the next e-mail I get from them...

Hello John,

Thank you for activating your subscription! Your first magazine will be on its
way to you in our next shipping cycle (please allow 8 to 10 weeks for delivery).
You can check the status of your magazines online, or change the address you
want them shipped to, by clicking the YOUR ACCOUNT tab. Your magazines will be
sent to the shipping address you provided:

Then I write back....

Wait, I didn't subscribe to a magazine nor do I want one. Please do not
>send me anything and take me off your mailing list. Please cancel any
>subscriptions as they will not be paid for.
>
>Thank You, John

Then they write....

John,

Do you wish to cancel your order for the Star Trek Fan Club membership?
We are offering a better deal to those who placed their orders prior to
July of this year. The 2 year renewals will no longer be an option. Also,
the price is slightly better.

If you still wish to have this canceled, we can do this for you.

Thanks!

And the last one...

John,

The membership that was given to you was a comp membership for winning a
contest. The prizes given are collectible magazines and a lithograph.
They are extremely expensive and very hard to find items that are only
available to fan club members.

If you do not wish to receive these, please let us know. Otherwise, you
will receive 6 issues a year from the LOTR fan club. (They are going for
a pretty penny on ebay from what I understand)

Check out our website at lotrfanclub.com.

Thanks and good luck.

Sounds legit to me. They clearly state that you won the membership. If they bill you later, you can always refuse to pay and attach a copy of the email. But I doubt that will happen, that final email is pretty clear.

Could it have been this sweep?

I can certainly understand why you'd be suspicious about a magazine subscription you never signed up for - I would be too.

It's kind of weird that in one email she mentions the Star Trek fan club and in another the LOTR fan club.

Decipher is legit And he's absolutley correct about the price of those magazines - they are very collectible! If the membership is free then I would keep it going if I were you. Sell what you don't want on Ebay. Lots of people will buy the stuff

And if you don't want that lithograph, I might be interested - LOL

Congrats!

Well, we'll see. I looked on ebay and there are no Fellowhip lithographs. Maybe that's because they are such a hot item and their going for a pretty penny! I still think it's one of those subscription scams but I'll take them I guess. Also, she never said I got the lithograph, just that I would start getting the mag subscription. I just don't like the looks of this.

I don't think that sweep was it, Chinchilla, but thanks. I know I entered it, but I seem to enter more Star Trek things for him. It just seems like I'd get a different e-mail win notice if it was from that sweep. Not the "thanks for activating your subscription" one. It makes it sound like I forgot to uncheck something. I better write her back some kind of apology for coming on so strong. I'll ask which contest this was from and see what answer I get from her.

Well, I was really curious about his, so I looked up Decipher's Star Trek Fan club. Here's a link to the details:
http://www.startrekfanclub.com/

The lithograph on the front page there is the one you get for free with the fanclub membership. Pretty nice! Here's the description page for it:

The final answer
OK, and that last part of the script! I had written back asking what sweep I won and apologized for coming off so mean...

Oh, I'm sorry I came off the way I did. I'm just so used to being sent
>magazines and things and then being asked to pay for them. So if it is a
>legit sweep, yes, I'd love the prize! I enter a lot of Star Trek and LOTR
>sweeps, so I'm not sure which one this came from? Can you tell me which
>sweep
>this was from?
>
>Again, sorry for the somewhat mean reply last time!
>
>Thanks, John
