Of course we should all be the same. But we are not. Trying to ignore racism and homophobia doesn't make it go away.As much as I would love to see some kind of magical change in the world were all people are treated equally,I really do not believe it is going to happen any time soon. I am not saying one life is worth more than another one, not at all. But I think that the protected groups put up with so much more harassment (as a group) that it only makes sense to have laws in place to try to stop violence against them.

I posted this on my FB, but it's applicable in this thread too:

And- Mrs M- when you say things like the people that are "labeling" other people are part of the problem, it really pisses me off.How do you suggest that prejudice is dealt with- by not mentioning it? The problem is real. I live in a VERY liberal town. One night, my friend who was dressed in drag was being harassed by some idiots. He flagged down a cop & asked for help, because he was scared. Do you know what the cop's suggestion was? That my friend go down on him in exchange for the cop's protection. If hate crime laws help can help protect anyone that has to put up with this kind of crap in some town that is far more redneck and dangerous than my own, I am all for it.
