Well, I've learned that my chickens are not
just cold hardy, they are Arctic-hardy.

Brrrrrrrrr.

It's even too cold to clean the coop. But it's not like the poops are going to smell - they are frozen solid. We are just cleaning the nests and top surfaces. Walking on the shavings, it feels like there are rocks under foot.

Bringing out extra carbs for warmth during these days, popping corn, baking corn bread. Anything to give them a little warmth inside their bodies. And they are faring well. The heat lamp is hanging, so the coop is around 32-38. Not too bad in there. Of course a bunch of them would rather be outside. They love their freedom more than warmth or food it seems.

My late husband said he saw some of Ray Price's chickens walking around outside just as happy as could be one time with ice on their backs. That was here in Texas though and it doesn't get near as cold here as it does there. I think if you gave them the choice of going outside they are smart enough to know when to go in.

I big pan of warm cornbread sounds good!

I have a dvd that shows a re-enactment of a woman in New England (?) who found her rooster frozen solid. She put him on the table in her house and planned to deal with him the next day.

He thawed out over night and lived to crow again.

Hardy bird.

And then there is Jean Hilliard who froze solid in 1980. She made a complete recovery without any permanent damage. She's on facebook now.

Hardy woman. But she's not alone.

Other animals and people have survived being frozen solid.

Thanks Sparkle.

That is one confused rooster. He is doing the wing/leg dance and saying to the human what he would say to a hen, which loosely translates to "wanna fool around?" He is a gentleman.

A good rooster asks the hen if she is receptive. If she declines, he goes to another rooster. A hen usually declines when she has an egg about to be laid - she is uncomfortable squatting and has no interest in having a rooster climb on her and press her down.

She may not know it, but this prevents the rooster from breaking the egg inside which can lead to peritonitis and kill her.

I had a good rooster, Russell. He always asked the hens. And sometimes he asked me. He was confused at times too.

Interesting thing - roosters know the difference between female and male humans. They often consider men to be a threat to their flock.

I had another rooster who didn't ask (Rocky) and being larger than my girls managed to kill 10 of my hens by peritonitis. By the time I realized they were sick, it was too late. Anyway peritonitis usually kills, even humans.
