We lay coins in our doorways and on our window sills for good fortune in the new year.

We have sauerkraut and pork (usually kielbasa). Been eating it every year for over 50 years and this year I think it may actually work.

Good Luck everyone!

Happy New Year!

I know in the South, it's Black-eyed peas.. but I never would touch them! Maybe I should; maybe I'd win more.

I just heard about the coins from a friend on FB and plan on doing that. I've also heard about eating Hoppin' John but have never made it.

Have 'silver' coin in your hand as the bells toll, something to drink and something to eat (usually shortbread).

The Spanish side has us eating 1 grape per toll of the bell so we have good luck in every month.

And the Scottish side leaves drink, coin and food to be carried in by the "first foot" who should be a dark haired male, but must never be a redhead.

We have black eyed peas and collard greens. The black eyed peas are supposed to bring luck, while the collard greens are supposed to bring wealth.

Our task must be to free ourselves...by widening our circle of compassion
to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature and its beauty.

I believe that what you do on New Year's eve you will do all year long, so I had a great dinner of Lobster and a glass of wine. Unfortunately no one to share it with but at least I will eat well this year.

Seems to work for me, about every three years, so 2014 should be it.

I just saw a new (to me) one- lift your left foot up before the clock turns so you start your year on the right foot.

Other than that- don't eat poultry on the 1st (causes the reverse of what you want because the birds scratch or walk backwards or something).

Eat pork so you will be living high on the hog.

Cabbage / greens for wealth.

Black eyed peas (nasty, I swallow them like medicine) so you always have coins to jingle together.

The Spanish tradition is to eat 12 grapes, one for each stroke of midnight. If you eat all 12 you will have good luck for the coming year.

About 12 years ago my DH and I quit eating pork and sauerkraut on New Year's Day and have had terrific good luck every year since! We usually have cheese fondue, watercress/cucumber salad and champagne on New Year's Eve--sometimes I make crab souffle instead.

We had a t-bone steak on the BBQ w/string beans and potatoes, drinking kamikazes now... don't believe in luck. I pray instead... LOL I did go with the chinese/jewish tradition of cleaning everything before the New Year and getting rid of all the things that are weighing me down (translation junk). Only both those cultures celebrate the new year on different days...

New to me this year, was a link that said eating lentils was a tradition for the New Year for luck. I'll be making lentil chili tomorrow anyhow.

Wishing & hoping & thinking & praying, planning & dreaming... and entering!

same here, but I like turnip greens better. I love them both so it's fine with me.
