I live in Salt Lake City, Utah and have my whole life. My extended family is also here. I cannot tell you how long I have asked my husband if we could please move. His response was always the same, "you need to fix what's bothering you, moving won't help."
Well, life has changed alot for us in the last couple of years. I learned many things, unfortunately the hard way! I was finally becoming comfortable with my life, and was resigned to the fact that it wasn't going to be changing.
Then all of a sudden the hubby says that his company might want him to move, and fairly quickly. My first choice was to go to Las Vegas, Nevada. It is growing so quickly, it's warm and close to the family here in Utah. Oregon and Washington state are looking way too expensive, as is California (he is from So. CA and I have a brother currently living in So CA). Idaho, Nevada and Arizona are looking the best.
Firstly, I wanted to vent a little because I am actually quite scared. Secondly, I would appreciate any feedback I could get. The areas I am considering are Phoenix, AZ (no 1), Reno or Las Vegas Nevada (no 2), and Boise, ID (no 3). I have three kids - 9, 12, and 4 to whom I need to consider. Do I work, if so -- huh!
I would love to have the guidance of any fellow sweepers in these areas. Who knows, maybe we could be neighbors!

i can not speak personally but my niece who is in administration in a phoenix area school, says the schools are wonderful there, theyseem to offer a lot for the kids. my sister jsut got back from there and i was surprised to learn they had to shut the air and put on heat. she lives outside of phoenix and just but a palatial home with an in ground swimming pool 5 bedroom 4 bath colonial for 250,000 so it can not be too expensive for housing either. i know they have wonderful shopping there because she lives in the better stores and would not live their other wise. i am sure some one who actully lives in that area can fill you in much etter, but coming from new york this would be eden

I have lived in Phoenix now for about 18 years. The longest I have ever lived anywhere in my life. Now I desperately want to leave and can't afford to... sigh... It is just too much for me anymore and especially with the girls turning into teenagers, we have been vandalized 3 times in the last 3 weeks and the girls attacked once. I hate the traffic, I haven't driven in 6 months because I have anxiety attacks just thinking about it.
But again this is just my humble opinion and based on the fact that I have been wanting to move to Walla Walla (as stated in many many posts) for the last year or so...Walla Walla has a total of 29,000 people and sounds like heaven to me. So maybe I am not the best person to ask.

I'm in the same boat - my husband and I live in Orem, and I have been trying since I moved here (for him) four years ago to get him to move. He talks about it, but I don't think he'll ever do it. But we also considered Las Vegas and the Mesa area if we ever do move (for obvious religious reasons and to be close - but not too close! - to family). Well, you are lucky if you finally get to go! I've never been to Boise, but I really like Las Vegas, although I don't know what it would be like to live there. Good luck!

I've heard great things about Phoenix, OK things about Las Vegas, and nothing really about Boise. I had cousins who lived just outside Boise when we were growing up and it was nothing but dirt...great fun for kids! We went to visit and picked asparagus right off the side of the road. Dug for earth worms, too, which you don't have in this part of Florida. All we've got are little skinny things, not the kind you use for fishing.

As far as raising children.....Boise! Lived there in the early 80s. It is a wonderful city! It is also very beautiful! Actually, I would love to move back there! I have also lived in the Phoenix area (appx 25 years). It's just so congested now. Crime is way up! Being a single parent, I think we had an extremely fulfilling family life in Boise! We skated by the college and park, tubed the river to the park, biked alot, went to the hot springs and the ski resort! Haven't been there since the 90s, but I think it would be worth your while to check it out! I have considered Las Vegas, but I am raising a grandchild, and after watching some of these reality shows.....I've had second thoughts! Good Luck! :gvibes:

HI, I am in Winnemucca NV in between Reno and Elko and about 2.5 hours from Boise. I would have to say that Reno is very nice, Nv has no state tax, but the gambling and 24 hr drinking do cause problems in certain families. There is a lot to do in Reno, I am not sure on cost of living there. Boise is gorgeous! We go up to hockey games and to the zoo and for the shopping. I think it is a great place for families. There are so many opportunities if you are willing to jump! Best wishes to you in your coming adventures!
