HELP!! How much of an salary increase do you typically ask for when you are making a lateral move at the same company just diferent department??

depends on how screwed up the department you are moving to is....
I'd start at a humble 10% and make sure to point out how much more productive you'll be in then new role.

A lateral move may not come with a salary increase at all, but it won't hurt to ask. It might also depend on when your last salary increase took place. If it's been close to a year, I'd ask for 3%. That's a typical increase.

someone told me to shoot for 80% of the midpot but I am only 1% away from that so who knows.....

At least ask for a cost of living increase; the wall street journal.com should have it listed.

Like the others said, it depends on the situation at your company. Many companies will not give a raise for a lateral move but will take into consideration, additional reponsibilities etc, when your annual review comes up. In this economy I would not start with a high number. If you are already being paid a base salary that is comparable to your new level/position you may want to try for 3-5% to see if you can get it. Now, if you think your company is doing well and have heard of others getting more than go for a higher amount.
Best of luck and congrats on the new position!
