View Full Version : Do You Sweep on Facebook and/or Twitter?

Brent
December 9th, 2009, 5:20pm
The number of sweepstakes and contests on Facebook and Twitter is EXPLODING.

Many sweepstakes and contests on Facebook and, to a lesser extent, Twitter have fairly favorable odds of winning, IMO.

I'm in the process of writing a post/article about why everyone should be sweeping on Facebook right now, along with some tips and advice.

In the meantime, I thought it would be interesting to see how many of you are currently using Facebook and/or Twitter to sweep.

What do you think about Facebook and Twitter?

I've just started using facebook for sweeps recently, so no wins yet. I signed up for twitter this week to enter some sweeps, so we will see! I would appreciate some tips on how to enter these. Thanks!

I've entered some. Its a good networking system for sweeping and many of my friends there will send some sweeps they have seen my way. I currently only use Facebook right now and here.

I used to sweep on both Facebook and Twitter and recently stopped on Facebook due to the privacy issues (mine and my friends). The apps that you download on Facebook (whether they be games or quizzes) can get your information and your friends even if your profile is set to private. Most of the sweeps I've seen on Facebook require you to "Allow" their application, so they would be included.

Look at the section called "Pay No Attention to the Apps"...very interesting.

http://www.aclu.org/blog/technology-and-liberty/facebook-privacy-transition-where-it-heading

Also, do the quiz listed in that paragraph so you can see for yourself what the makers of the apps can pull from your profile and your friends. I did and was shocked. Answer the question and wait a second to see the information start scrolling.

Well I missed one of the sweeps that OLS was running had no clue it was there, but I am on here for a reason and one of which is everything is very well organized and FB does not even come close. I am sure whatever national or sponsor sweep listed there will eventually get to OLS.

I do twitter for those sweeps that require you to post.

ETA: Since you brought this to my attention I have won 2 sweeps from FB! thanks

I sweep on both. I've noticed that the sweeps on Twitter are exploding! So many I can barely keep up! If you aren't on Twitter, you are really missing out! I will say though, I haven't won anything on either Facebook or Twitter! But I haven't given up yet!

I have been entering both Twitter and Facebook sweeps. Haven't won yet, but have noticed that the odds seem fairly decent on some of the sweeps. It seems like more and more social networking sweeps are appearing on a daily basis.

Yes! Actually, I just added a Facebook sweep that I found a couple of minutes ago.

I think there will be tons more sweeps on social media sites and since I am a slow learner, I thought I should get started now.

I'm only sweeping on Facebook, and just recently, too.

I don't know what the chances are of winning (yet), but entering the FB sweeps is a pretty simple process.

I sweep on both, but I really don't like sweeps on twitter or FB. THe main reason is that I don't like inundating my friends with sweep related postings. My twitter friends suffer the most. LOL

I've had a personal facebook account for quite a while, but recently opened a new one for sweeping. More recently, I bit the bullet, and opened a twitter account as well.

I'm glad I did because that's how I won my laptop a few weeks ago. I think the odds are much better! I have won three things in the last three weeks directly from twitter only contests!

Yeah, I totally agree...that's why I opened up a separate account just for sweeping...My friends would think I was total looney bins if I started sending them all that "contest stuff!"

I'm somewhat reluctant to do them on FB, so far it's pretty much been first 1000 or 5000 to sign up.

I've never tweeted and don't ever intend to tweet.

I've stumbled onto some really amazing giveaways on twitter simply by doing a search there.
I typed in "shoe giveaway" one day and an hour later I was the winner of any pair I wanted from the site holding the giveaway. We played a trivia game using hashtags for an hour and they chose the winner from our answers. It was a little confusing but kinda chaotic and fun too. :)

Actually, you can choose whether or not to publish the sweep postings to your Wall or not. Just hit the "Skip" button instead of "Publish" in the Publish window that pops up after entering.

Some applications (including those that are sweep-related) request that you grant them permission to automatically publish posts on your Wall somewhere along the line. If you grant an application such permission, you won't have the choice to publish to your Wall or not, it will happen automatically.

How to prevent any Application from automatically publishing posts or recent activity (one line stories) to your Wall
Place your mouse pointer over the "Settings" link at the top-right of the page and click on the "Application Settings" link in the menu that appears. The resulting page will be a list of all the Applications you have used.

Select "Allowed to Post" from the "Show" select menu in the upper-right.

On the resulting page, the first section of applications listed will be under the heading Allowed to Post Short Stories without Prompting. These are applications that have permission to publish posts to your Wall automatically (without seeking your permission each time). To change the permissions, click on the "Edit Settings" link of any application and then the "Additional Permissions" tab in the mini-window that pops up. There you can check or uncheck the Publish to streams checkbox to grant or deny permission to automatically publish posts to your Wall.

The next section of applications listed will be under the heading Allowed to Post One-Line Stories without Prompting. These are applications that can automatically publishing recent activity (one line stories) to your Wall. To change these permissions, click on the "Edit Settings" link of any application and then the "Additional Permissions" tab in the mini-window that pops up. There you can check or uncheck the checkbox that says Publish recent activity (one line stories) to my wall to grant or deny permission to automatically publish recent activity to your Wall.

-----------------------------------

Starting today, Facebook is enabling several new privacy features that, among other things, give you more control over who can or can't see your indiidual Wall posts.

Privacy-Per-Post: Facebook Rolls Out Its New Privacy Settings
http://www.techcrunch.com/2009/12/09/facebook-privacy-per-post/

I posted this on the OLS Facebook Page about it this morning:

This will be very useful, for a variety of purposes. For example, you can create a custom list of Facebook friends called "sweepers" or "OLS" and when you post a sweep or contest to your Wall, instead of making it available to all of your Facebook friends you can choose to share it only with your list of fellow sweepers.

The article gives more common examples such as sharing baby photos with just your "Family" or inappropriate YouTube videos with just your "college buddies."

I'm not yet seeing the new privacy-per-post control on my personal Wall, but it is here on the OLS Facebook Page. It's right next to the "Share" button.

I just got the new privacy-per-post control added to my Wall a few hours ago.

I think that these sites (facebook, twitter, blogs etc) are why our odds have been lowered. (And yes I am a long time sweeper even though I'm new here on this site, there are lesser sweep sites available out there that I've used).

One sweep running right now is posted with a daily bumped thread on many of the boards I check, cars, fitness, cooking, etc.

This is a sweep that would have been easy to win two years ago because of the amount of prizes. Now, I doubt I have a chance. I've been trying but the odds are slim now because of the exposure. Everyone shares it and posts it and forwards it.

I don't know about the odds for the facebook etc sweeps, but anything that will help us win, I will be grateful for. Thank you for the post.

I just started entering sweeps on Facebook a month or so ago and no no wins yet but I am hopeful. I would much rather enter through Facebook than a blog simply because I have had too many instances with blogs opening up mulitply pages. I hate that because then I have to stop sweeping and run a scan on this old computer.

Until last month I totally despised Facebook and even the thought of it. But then I joined to promote my Etsy store and realized I could also get more entries in the Mom Blog sweeps. I have just in the last week or so started sweeping on Facebook and have won 2x. Mayeb, just maybe Twitter is next....I still dunno.

Congrats! I only sweep on facebook. What I love is how easy they are a few clicks and that's it! But I haven't won anything yet. Since I have a mac I can't use Shazam, so I REALLY like that it's only a few clicks and I don't have to constantly fill out forms.

I love FB. I do those.
I am signed on twitter but to be honest I Must be getting old, because I can't figure it all out on Twitter.
I follow certain companies, but I can't figure out how I am supposed to respond. I even tried looking up a Twitter for dummies
thing to figure it out.
Like what does the # mean
or the @ ??
I think RT is retweeting, but I just don't get it all.
Then the direct tweets, as opposed to mass tweeting???
HELP!

For sweeping on Twitter, ContestQueen and kbsocial are two good ones to follow:

You can also follow a couple of the lists I set up:

OLS Sweepers

As somebody else mentioned, using the search feature makes it easy to find a lot of sweeps. Here's a couple of searches I've used:

Twitter search for Retweetable sweeps:
http://twitter.com/#search?q=retweet%20AND%20sweepstakes%20OR%20sweeps%20OR%20sweep%20OR%20contest%20OR%20giveaway%20OR %20win

Twitter search for tweets that include a link and contain the word sweepstakes, sweeps, contest or giveaway:
http://twitter.com/#search?q=sweepstakes%20OR%20sweeps%20OR%20contest%20OR%20giveaway%20filter%3Alinks

Of course, you can and should always experiment with different searches yourself.

Twitter sweeps are addictive, I spend WAY too much time on them! But I have won a few nice prizes and I enjoy it.

I still think the key to winning is to mix it up, I do snail, Text, Twitter, FB and of course online. Very few blogs though, I don't like jumping through the blogger's hoops

mcclave
December 10th, 2009, 9:48am
I enter them if I find them here mostly. If I have extra time I will seek them out in both places.

To be honest I am beginning to feel like I'm getting pulled in so many directions now that I feel very disorganized. Not like I feel when I'm just entering sweeps here!

Just like we have a blog selection. It would be nice to have a Twitter and Facebook selection also.

For me it's really a time organization thing! Top priority is going through the sweeps here, if I'm caught up I venture into other areas. Now having the Twitter and Facebook sweeps mixed in with the regular sweeps I tend to get sidetracked, because both places require undivided attention.

LADYDEE429

I have enter on both facebook and twitter. I won a few on twitter but that was before my company put a block on all social networking sites. :( I haven't yet won one off of facebook. The problem I am having is there just isn't enough time to enter everything. Between regular sweeps, blogs, twitter, and mail ins I could do this full time and still not catch everything. Even though it's just me. With a full time job I still miss a lot. I don't know how those of you with a job and a family find time.

if you sweep a lot, your facebook friends will get inundated with what sweeps you are entering. a twitter account just for sweeping is a better option, and very simple once you get used to the process.

yes I just started doing both of them about a month ago. I have won quite a few times on twitter, and once on facebook, which was yesterday. I think there is better odds on there. For me at least. I have had more luck on blogs, twitter, and facebook, than I ever have had in a long time!

I do mostly Facebook have had a few non sweeping friends win prizes after I entered them LOL but have not won anything myself. Think the odds on some of the facebooks most be really bad since so many people are Fans of the Facebook Group but some don't seem to have that many fans so figure odds are better. I do not do a lot of twitter contest but won the first one I entered. It was a book a while back

I only use Twitter for sweeps. Frankly, I think Twitter is pretty much useless except for news flashes and Marketing. I don't do Facebook sweeps because I don't want to subject all my relatives and friends to 10 million status updates about "WonkaChad just entered to win....." Plus I don't like the idea of the Facebook apps pulling my information and the information of my friends & family.

jellosheriff
December 10th, 2009, 12:17pm
My FB and Twitter accounts are solely for sweeping and I have no personal info in there for just that reason.
If you want to FB and Twitter personally, I would suggest setting up separate accounts, just like you would set up a separate email address for sweeps to keep your sweep emails separate from your personal and business emails.
I agree that FB privacy is an issue, so I would suggest you not put anything in there that you wouldn't want the world to know anyway. GLTA!

Loving Twitter but, have only entered probably a total of 5 sweeps on Facebook since joining. I'd love to see twitterstakes and blogs remain, gives a variety. I signed up for Facebook about a month ago and just started entering some. But I don't really like the concept of Twitter so I haven't even bothered going to that site.

You don't know what you're missing. Entering on twitter is quick & easy, just copy & paste. I've won several prizes on twitter including a mini laptop, but only 1 prize on FB so far.

I'm trying, but I have no idea if I'm doing it correctly. Just making a stab and hoping for the best.

Keep trying, you'll learn it in no time at all. It's well worth it!

Only on facebook.

But really whats the odds there are so many people on facebook.

Unless it's really a big prize I don't know if it's worth the time.

I really think it's harder to win on FB. In the several months I've been doing both, I've won many prizes on twitter but only a pair of jeans on FB.

I would have to disagree with you. Yes, right now the social sites are in an upswing mode, in as much as the blog sweeps have taken off over the last year(s). However, even if there are more people exposed to the sweeps, in the long run, most people are going to enter a few if they come across it but get highly discouraged when they don't win immediately and then basically ignore the majority that crosses their wall/tweet/etc. It is no different than the people who come and go on OLS. It is the persistent sweepers who will continue to enter and if you get in while the odds are in your favor, you're more likely to be successful.

Congrats! I only sweep on facebook. What I love is how easy they are a few clicks and that's it! But I haven't won anything yet. Since I have a mac I can't use Shazam, so I REALLY like that it's only a few clicks and I don't have to constantly fill out forms.
Use auto fill on your Mac. Fills in most everything you need.

Just started sweeping on facebook about a month ago. Won some chocolate last week.
I hit skip for some of the sweeps on facebook, but there are some that let you enter a friends name and you can both win, so those I publish. My daughter, my youngest son and a few friends enter those.
And the lists are great! I just made one for "sweeps friends". You can have your friends in more than one list too. For example, my daughter is in my "family" list AND my Sweeps friends" list.

I'm still getting familiar with twitter so I'm not sure I'm doing everything right but I'm trying.
I'm following some of you on twitter now:gvibes:

No, no interest in doing any of the social network gigs, so I really hope that Twitter and Facebook contests don't take the place of regular sweeps.
That would be baaaaaaad!
It would be fine if a sweep offered both, like the way it is now with some, in having a regular online form and the ability to do snailmail on the same sweep.

But if more and more abandon the regular online form and go to Twitter and Facebook only, I guess I won't have a problem finding something to do for the few hours a week I enter sweepstakes :-)

I am interested in learning

Have a twitter account( I think)......but have no clue on how to TWEET......hahaha

I have a facebook account.........but want to keep that Just for REAL Friends( do not want to induate them with sweeps stuff)

So I made up a different FB account last night( just for sweeping) now lets see if I can find it again...lol

Here is a question I have.

When I go to twitter.com........that is a search bar and I can type in anything ( even looking or new sweeps/contest)
but IF I am signed in already on Twitter,,,,,I can not do a search except for NAMEs of people?

Who wants to adopt me to show the ropes on this stuff?

LOL! Not interested as it seems to be a place for the vote queens to gather.
Perhaps a separate facebook could be set up for those of us who just want to socialize and not be subjected to the barrage of vote requests?
Besides, how can you keep the premium vote requests separate here on OLS, but then allow all of them together on facebook? Doesn't make sense, so seems the premium vote request forum here on OLS is no longer a needed thing.

I've been trying for some twitter contests and facebook too. Won one on FB but nada on twitter. I find it to be frustrating. I see the same people winning over and over for things I've been entering. If you look at their tweets, it's basically spamming the same contest with tweet after tweet. Is this cool? I hate to do that to anyone who is following me so I am randomly tweeting a contest entry only a few times a day.
For those of you who have won on twitter, what was your strategy? Spam tweet or was it luck of the draw? Just curious.

LOL LivLikDiane - I know how you feel.

Twitter is different, but once you 'get it' - it can be as addicting as sweeping.

If you type #sweepstakes into your search, you'll get a list of the most recent tweets using that hash word. Start following people interested in sweeping, and tweeters that create or run sweeps that interest you. When you are following them, you'll see their tweets - if they follow you back, they see your tweets. It's all about building relationships, contacts, and connecting with people who are interested in the same things you are.

You can follow me on twitter at: http://twitter.com/zizish

I am guessing I will be like a dinosaur on this issue.

I won't be entering Facebook or Twitter contests at all as I feel there is a complete lack of privacy on both of these social sites and I don't want to share information with a million of my so called closest friends.

Ditto. Unless if they all have extremely large prizes, it is just not worth it.

I am doing one twitter worth $25K and no Facebooks. I have done a few MySpaces in the past (probably less than 5 with a MySpace account only for sweepstakes.) Looks like MySpace has died in favor of Facebook.

I do twitter and facebook - twitter is easier and I have won several. One was 3rd prize for getting retweets. ($300 check) I don't even remember tweeting it but apparently people retweeted my tweet. LOL

You do have to check your direct messages and your @"your twitterid" links to see messages for wins because they will want you to tweet them your info.

On FB, check your notifications as well as messages because they might contact you that way or on a lot of them, you have to check their wall to see winners which is a pain to do because who really remembers what we enter and when to check back

I'm getting more & more into it- becoming an old pro at twitter.

I'm having a TON of trouble figuring out HOW to list twitter sweeps for others & twitter sweeps are pretty straight forward- very few only want one rt or mention a number limit to them. We need unlimited rt & 1x only buttons. Per account clickies- for both twitter & FB sweeps (instead of per HH & such which isn't really relevant to the others). FB & Twitter sweeps also can have other criteria- either a button for OTHER criteria letting others know to read & look for it, or the plethora of ones out there (like adding notes to blog, liking on FB & follow on twitter & then comment & rt, etc...) It'd be easier to check mark additional criteria.

THEN *if* we checked twitter or fb- it needs inserts for whom to follow etc... since twitter or fb sweeps are typically www.xxxxxxxxsite.com marking as either would fill in all the repetitive links & only ask for the name without having to copy & paste it so often.

My head SPINS sometimes how to even post it- half the time I can't post as fast as it comes up. For twitter it'd be handy if it just brought up the rt quote I need, rather than the initial page of info as a regular sweep might have. Perhaps a linky seperately for twitter the same way we can sort premium and such out? clicking that would produce them, clicking MYSWEEPS & twitter ones produces only the phrase of the day or whatnot?

I dunno-- I've seen many here having great luck with them all tho- congrads guys!

Good luck with the Tweets - I have won a few times. It is easy to tweet them but hard to list them here. When you list a Twitter or FB sweeps, the editors have those buttons (twitter/FB)which we check off. And the only way to add what to tweet is to put it into the comments section. The problem with listing RT & follow to wins, there are no rules, usually no end dates and many are outside the US which could mean we aren't eligible to win. Many are being retweeted long after the prize has been awarded. The ones that are "we will give away xxxx when we reach xxxx followers" are still being tweeted when they have passed that number of followers. LOL I retweet a lot too and probably some of them are over already. I've also seen a few that look like individuals offering a prize. I think they are fakes, the person doing it wants to see how many will actually follow them and tweet it. Without rules, it's never a guarantee that there is actually a prize being given away.

At one time, the editors were adding things like comment, follow, tweet etc.. to blog listings but too many blogs have so many ways of entering (1x for A, 3X for B, 2X for C daily, 1X every 2 hours for tweets and so on) that it became impossible to list them all. Is it a daily? A one Time? Hourly? If the mandatory entry is 1x that's how we list it and then we put the other ways to enter in the archived rules and just tag the sweeps as a blog. In general, people who enter the blog giveaways know what it entails. The same holds true when we tag it as twitter or facebook, people usually know it means Tweet or like and so on.

My biggest problem now with twitter is I'm following more than follow back and Twitter won't let me follow anyone else until my numbers even out. Sigh...I do like follow and RT :smile3:

I sweep on Twitter more then I do Facebook. However I've been taking longer breaks away fronm twitter because I just can't stand how bad it's turned with the hypocrites and the greed. As for Facebook, I only do a select few of their sweeps. Somehow the "knowing" of how many thousands are entered really turns me off. I don't understand either FaceBook or Twitter. Back many years ago I used to be considered very tech-savvy. I even worked as an alpha tester for a software development company, and did beta testing for the early versions of Windows. Then came months of chemotherapy and so many months of complete brain fog that I didn't go near a computer for more than a year. The brain fog has dissipated to a certain extent, but it still impedes my learning process.

When I came back to the WWW it had changed so much it was almost unrecognizable. And now, for heaven's sake, I'm so far behind the times that I'm just learning how to follow a blog. And I've never learned how to get them delivered by RSS Feed, whatever that is.

After entering sweeps for well over 30 years, I never figured I'd quit doing them entirely. But it looks like eventually there won't be any decent sweeps left that aren't on either FB or Twitter. When that time comes I guess I'll either have to figure them out or quit entering sweeps. I don't know if I can ever figure them out. So my only option may be quitting. :(

Don't give up on them - most of the sweeps that people are calling "Facebook" really have nothing to do with facebook at all. They are the same entry forms we have been using for years, just through an application called Wildfire which from what I can tell is just a simplified application process to allow sponsors to set up a sweepstakes.

If the sweeps is already edited and it is noted in the comments or it specifically says Facebook up top (where we add details such as email, flash, trivia etc...) then you would need to have a Facebook account for that sweepstakes. Facebook is simple to set up an account, you really don't need to provide personnal info and then you would be able to enter the sweeps that want you to "like" them. And to Like someone on facebook is as simple as a click of a button.

And are these FB and Twitter sweeps done under the same gov rules that other sweeps have to follow? Or can they not fulfill a prize without any repercussions?

Some of them have real rules, some don't. It really isn't any different than some that have always been out there for ex: sign up for newlsetter to win XXX - do we really know if anyone actually wins? We definitely get the emails though LOL

When I have doubts, I skip them.

I never looked into it but does FB allow more than one account? Then you could set up a FB just for sweeping.

Thanks, Ziggywag. (LOVE the screen name, incidentally :wink4:)

I signed up for Facebook a year or more ago because my niece wanted me to. I used my private email address (the one I use for friends and family only) and I immediately started getting all kinds of garbage emails to that address from people I'd never heard of. It took me weeks to find out how to unsubscribe, and I swore I'd never sign up with FB again.

I've seen those Wilfire sweeps, but I assumed they were a part of FB, and that when I filled out the form I'd be rejoining it. So I've never entered any of them. Now that I know they don't belong to FB I'll be able to do them -- and some of them are really good ones!

Thanks again!

I just did the same thing the other day! Works GREAT! I'm sure my friends and family gets tired of seeing all my FB entries to sweeps so I created one to be a little more private. Works fantastic! Good luck!!

I gave up trying to have two accounts. I have friends from OLS that I think enter more than I do and I hardly even notice their entries, so I don't think mine are that bad and who knows, maybe one of my other friends will see something, enter and win. :)

Finally starting to hit some wins on them, $50 gas card and some free GC sfrom Long John Silvers and 15 bucks from Pizza Hut, all in September. :)

I do both and have done really well.

Won a PS3 and 32" HDTV off Twitter last December.

I've had quite a few small wins on FB.

Well, I am posting an answer well after the initial asking...I obviously don't peruse the forums very well...not sure what got into me this morning! Either way--I do enter a lot of sweeps on both Facebook and Twitter. I am a very avid believer that social media marketing is on a serious rise and will only continue to matter more to consumers and the companies with products to be consumed. We are now even seeing these snap tag sweepstakes in some magazines which I see as a form of mobile marketing which is likewise on the incline. I know there are people who are hesitant to participate in social media and the like in order to win prizes, however, I say to make efforts to participate as it is only the beginning of another technology shift that will impact how we interact with companies as a whole.

I think it will be harder to win with all the new social media.

There is so many more people to compete with.

JMO though who knows how this will al shake out.

I have entered a few facebook and twitter but haven't won anything yet.

I refuse to use Facebook for sweepstakes. With their privacy policy the last thing I'm doing is entering sweepstakes. Keep sweepstakes third party advertisers!
