Since the death of Jett Travolta, parents Kelly Preston and John Travolta have kept their grief and emotions private while not discussing their loss with the media. In the fall, though, Preston is preparing to speak for the first time about the tragic death of her 16-year-old son.
Preston is set to give a speech in October at the California Governor's Conference for Women in a 'Grief & Resilience' panel, where she'll open up about Jett's death, Maria Shriver tells PEOPLE. Shriver, who's hosting the event, says that if Preston "can empower one other woman who feels like they can't get out of bed, or get through the day, whatever the loss, it'll be worthwhile sharing her story."

Shriver says that Preston "has been thinking about this for a couple of months ... I asked her to speak and she knew about the conference and decided if she was only going to speak once, it would be here. She wants the conversation to be about more than just her."
Elizabeth Edwards and actress Susan St. James, two other women who have lost sons, will join Preston on the 'Grief & Reslience' panel.
"These are subjects we all experience and no one wants to talk about," Shriver tells PEOPLE.
On a lighter note, Kate Gosselin will also be in attendance at the conference, thanks to Shriver's daughters.
"I invited her 4 to 5 months ago before all this other stuff happened ... My daughters are enamored with her show. They said, 'Invite her, she has 8 kids and the show is so interesting.' Nobody can prepare anyone for what she has gone through. I'm happy to have her," Shriver said of Gosselin.

Plans for actress Kelly Preston to break her silence about losing her 16-year-old son, Jett, have been put on hold, PEOPLE has learned exclusively.

The actress, who is married to John Travolta, had agreed to speak at the California Governor's Conference for Women hosted by Maria Shriver in October on a panel titled "Grief & Resilience" following Jett's sudden death this January.

"It is with my sincere apologies that I must pull out from speaking at [the] conference. I am sorry, but I truly believed that I could do it," Preston tells PEOPLE in a statement. "Otherwise I never would have said that I could. But I am still deeply in the process of healing, and it's just too soon."

Shriver, who just lost her 88-year-old mother, Eunice Kennedy, on Aug. 11, and her uncle, Sen. Edward Kennedy, who died Wednesday, completely understands Preston's position.

"I know how hard it was for Kelly to make this decision and she has my complete support and understanding. Everyone has their own path to healing and their own timetable for grieving," says Shriver in a statement. "Kelly's presence at The Women's Conference will be missed, but the main stage conversation on grief and resilience with Elizabeth Edwards, Susan Saint James and myself will continue as planned. Having just lost my own mother and my uncle, I believe it's an important and meaningful subject because loss and grief will touch everyone at some point in their lives."

The Conference for Women will be held Oct. 26-27 in Long Beach.
