Yes, as governor of Alaska, she’s the commander in chief of the Alaska National Guard. And yes, her professional military subordinate is quite impressed with her in that role.

Are we to call her a war hero now?

Why would you think my statement infers sexism?
It's a simple fact that Governors don't "Run and manage and operate the National Guard on a daily basis". that's what the State Commanders of the National Guard do.

I've heard that during her term in office, not once has Governor Palin had to call out the Alaska National Guard to assist in any disaster, crisis, emergency...nothing.

I just love it when you guys make off-the-wall comments that are so easy to disprove.

The Alaska National Guard is unusual in that its jobs include manning part of the U.S. missile defense system. The 49th Missile Defense Battalion works on interceptor missiles designed to shoot down intercontinental missiles.

Members of the Alaska National Guard also were deployed to Iraq, and Palin visited their unit in July 2007. The McCain campaign has pointed to that experience as an example of Palin's foreign policy background.

Closer to home, the bread-and-butter duties of most state National Guards are natural disasters. During Palin's 21 months in office, there has been one declared disaster: widespread flooding in June and July this year. Palin quickly signed a disaster declaration, officials said. The Guard's role was limited to providing two water tanks and 30,000 sandbags to local authorities.

The Alaska Air National Guard, with 1,946 service members, is involved in an exceptional number of search-and-rescue missions. Since Palin became governor in December 2006, the Air Guard has flown 521 missions, saving 200 lives and assisting with the rescue of 77 more people, said Kalei Brooks, a spokeswoman for the Alaska Department of Military and Veterans Affairs.

"Our rescue squadron is the busiest in the nation," she said.

Palin visited troops that were no longer under her control at the time of her visit - that's foreign policy experience?

Where did she go again?

Governor Palin today visited with a National Guard unit from Alaska serving in Kuwait. In a press conference with Alaska reporters, the governor said she had spent “an amazing day with the 297th infantry battalion and other National Guard troops.”

Okay, you got me on that one. But, really...that's it? That's the extent of VP candidate Palin's 'foreign policy experience'?

I addressed her foreign policy experience in a different thread. This thread is about her experience as Commander in Chief of the National Guard.

But this little gem -

was tucked in the part you quoted in a previous post in this thread. McCain is using her visit to Kuwait - not Iraq as is implies - as her foreign policy background. She spent a day in Kuwait.

Palin did a good job as Commander In Chief of the Alaskan National Guard - but really, is it that difficult of a job, especially when she has someone else to look after the guard on a day to day basis and all she really does is sign papers calling them up a few times in cases of emergency?

1. as glowing as this guy was over her, i have to question his objectivity - and also because its an avenue being pursued by FOX (my point here is, if the guy had bad things to say about her, this wouldn't be on FOX...but that's another issue).

2. the issue with the NG reference even being at the forefront is because people on the right, and with the campaign have specifically pointed to her being "commander in chief" of the state's NG as a point of "foreign policy experience." as shown by the campbell brown interview, the mccain staffer couldn't make the connection between "foreign experience" and running the NG (because there is none).

The war is in Iraq. Kuwait, as has been the case in other Middle Eastern conflicts in recent years, is a staging ground. I'm not providing a link because this is common knowledge. The quote states that they are deployed to Iraq and she visited their unit. I really don't see any great scandal here.

I was simply pointing out that she wasn't in Iraq as the McCain spokesman make it sound like.

I know a bit about Kuwait - my foreign policy background includes me being in the Persian Gulf region for a few weeks.

Were you on the McCain VP selection committee short list. If not it's a darn shame seeing as you have more "foreign policy experience" then Palin.

lol, so what? Is she point in the mountains and woods and telling them where to find people? How has she, as governor, really done anything of significance concerning the National Guard?

lol, Palin supports are so desperate to stretch out her "experience" into something it's not.
