My son graduates from college (May 2009). He has a disability and I am concerned about him being off my insurance. Don't know how long it will take to get a job.

I have group insurance through my employer. My insurance book is kind of vague about who qualifies for COBRA coverage.

Does anyone know if a dependent can COBRA insurance after graduation and if it is generally for 18 months?

I don't want to ask my benefits person at this point because the last time I asked a "what if" question there was a misunderstanding and my other son was dropped and had to be reinstated. Thanks Angela

Actually if you establish your son as disabled prior to losing his insurance, he can probably stay on your regular medical coverage, read your plan document under the definition of "dependent" to get a clear picture of this. Much cheaper then COBRA.

But yes, once his coverage terminates he is eligible for COBRA and I do believe it is for 18 months. Remember that once he goes on to COBRA he is treated the same as any other employee under the same medical coverage, meaning he can add dependents to his COBRA should he marry, have a child, etc.

good information. Actually his disability is a ADD so it is not a disabling condition that would prevent him for working. Just concerned about his finding a job.

He is also planning to get married so your answer was very helpful. I was concerned about them not having jobs with benefits for several months so your information was great! thanks Angela
