We used to keep our mail in a basket but found that it was hard to find things that had migrated to the bottom. I finally struck upon an unusual idea. The British use a toast rack to keep toast from getting soggy on the table. It works great as a mail organizer. Here is the one we have (I inherited it from my grandmother), but obviously there are cheaper alternatives. It also looks halfway decent on the island in our kitchen:

nope. The normal snail mails we get day to day, like the bank statements, bills and more junks. Have to store them and then shred them when i get time. i keep a paper bag to store. Like wise i was asking, what others follow. :)

I had a bad habit of throwing stuff on the countertops, so I bought this really cool three basket wire stand at Costco. The baskets are deep, they hang from hooks on a stand that is about 4' tall. I throw the mail in there and then every few weeks I take the basket to the table and sort through it, bills go in another basket on my desk, magazines go in the second basket until I have time to rifle through them and the third basket is used for items that need to be filed, like insurance papers, etc.

The basket stand is set out of sight, in the dining room area (which we never use).

When the mail comes I sort it out as to who its for,
The junk mail gets tossed, the magazines go into the basket in the family room, my DD's goes onto the step to go up to her room, our household bills are opened dates due marked on calender and then go into the drawer with current stuff in the kitchen desk, offers and such get posted on the bulletin board in the laundry room, anything that needs saving goes into a file in the file cabinet. This way I know exactly where it all is at any given time

I File 13 most of the stuff that comes in the mail. I hate seeing such a waste of paper, but most of what we get is junk, junk, junk. I have a manila folder where I keep all the bills that are coming due in the next month and the bank statement. We don't really get anything else other than junk and bills, and DH's magazine subscriptions which tend to pile up on the desk. grrr

I bring the mail in and deal with it immediately. Magazines on coffee table, bills in desk drawer, samples to the kitchen or bathroom, file what needs to be filed, tear off addresses from junk and put the rest in recycling bin, run anything with personal info through the shredder. It only takes a minute, nothing builds up that way and I'm perfectly organized.
