What is the most outrageous ARV (Approximate Retail Value) you have seen on a sweepstakes?

By "outrageous", I mean "over-the-top" or way over the "REAL" value of the item....

Example: A DVD movie that sells for about $15.00 in Wal Mart or Target quoted on a sweepstakes as having an ARV of $50.00. :rolleyes2

I've never noticed something like that but I think some of the consultation fees for "celebrities" or "experts" are WAY overinflated.

I couldn't believe this onë:
16.5 ounce jar of Crème de La Mer moisturizing cream (ARV $1,350).
I don't care how good a moisturizing cream is, I'd never pay that.
I'll stick with Oil of Olay!

I was just going to say the same thing! WOW! La Prarie is another one that is expensive to an extreme!!! Quite some time ago they had a giveaway for two samples valued at $65.00! Now, granted, the samples did come in very nice glass little bottles and the presentation and packaging was awesome, but......

It seems all prizes use ARV at twice the going rate. Thats why it is important to document everything for the IRS. Who wants to pay sticker price on an automobile for example.

As far as prizes go I get a kick out of free spins or free shipping. <g>:twocents:

I won a pair of flip=flops that supposedly had Swavorski crystals on the top thong part. Looked like cheap dime store rhinestones to me...

Had an ARV of $145-$215 depending on the style.:dizzy:

Hmm, I can print those downtown here for $7 - $15 each depending on how many I order. For $50, maybe they have those Swavorski Crystals attached to them... or, maybe, they are BeDazzled tm.

Some are only about $100... but I have seen much higher. Some are very honest though, I have seen an autographed book with an ARV of its cover value. Maybe the author didn't see thier signature as having value (it was a romance author).

The La Mer doesn't qualify as being outrageous in this thread because, the ARV is the actual cost. In reality it really costs that much, of course it's an insane price, but that's how much it does cost.

You mean that "dream" computer system that was around 35,000? Even computer geeks thought that was a tad much. How bout they just buy me a new tricked out Mac for about 3k, pay off some of my bills, and then cover my mortgage for a year. Now THAT would be a awesome prize of equal value!

I know I have seen things in the past, but this premium one I just added to mysweeps today had me scratching my head
You get to choose prize components up to 5k to enter for, but all of them seem overpriced. 1k for a year of broadband internet ($45 a month is what I've always paid) $1500 for a overnight stay in a local hotel, dinner and tickets to a show? Even here in Seattle that couldn't average more than $700 if I tried hard, and most of the other prizes also seem to be valued at double what they should actually be.
That wont stop me from entering though! :fairy4:

I was going to ask what an "OLSer" was... but then I figured it out... I may be new, but I am not a dumb :lang:. So, did they get a lifetime supply of Slim Jims too? It would be nice to have unlimited music like that, but having to pay 27% tax (I think that is about right for US Federal taxes), ouch! :beye: ($5,400) My father always said to take your gross and divid it by 2 to see what you will be taking home. That is over-compensating, but a nice rule of thumb.

I just saw some flimsy looking strollers that have an ARV $1,100! I know it does fit my category, but that is an expensive stroller... it must push itself and have a back-up camera for parallel stroller-parking... It is a VERY cool stroller (kind of like a big Tranformer), but OUCH on the price! $100 -$300 is high enough for a stroller. Oh, and that doesn't include things like the Car seat adaptor, rain cover, Parasol, etc

Well, maybe this does fit the category, after doing some price searches BabyAge sells them for as low as $799 ($300 less...maybe it is a refurbished version), but most stores have them for $899 - $1099. I know it isn't eye-cream, but baby-stuff is spendy! $$$ :baby: $$$

$1,100 for eye cream, now that is a jaw dropper

Some movie posters have a really high value and cost about $20... if it is a "real" movie poster they can cost a few hudred. Now if it is 8 12" by 11" then we are in the neighborhood of $5 or less.

From a local tv station contest: (1) Grand Prize Winner will receive: (a) Two front row tickets WWE Raw Event (b) lunch for two with a WWE Superstar, (c) two WWE prize packs, (d) round-trip limo service for two from Grand Prize Winner's home to lunch, and (e) round-trip limo service from Grand Prize Winner's home to the WWE Raw Event. Estimated Grand Prize Value = $2,500.00.

The tv station had this contest 3 times within the last year. As a person who has rented a limo before...I calculated that the ARV couldn't possibly be more than $1300 for the entire trip considering the fact it all takes place during the same day. I actually won a 4 day/3 night trip from the same station last year. They said the ARV of the trip was $2,500...which was correct back then because that inlcuded airfare for 2, 3 night hotel stay at the Marriott, 2 Wrestlemania 23 tickets and $500 spending money.

Here is how calculated the ARV:

Most limos cost $80 per hour---even it was 10 hours, that would be $800
2 Front Row tickets to WWE Monday Night Raw ---$160 ($80 each)
Two WWE prize packs are usually $50 each --- $100
1/2 hour lunch a WWE wrestler can't be worth more than $250.

I also seen a sweep that said a Nintendo Wii is worth $700...they sell for $250.

The goldfish wallets are the one I always think of. It especially ticked me off, because you know that the company used the figure of $15 per prize when they figured their taxes, in spite of the fact that they probably paid about 17 cents each to have them made.

I mean, come on! You couldn't even fit a dollar inside without folding it first!
