Our Goodwill had their quarterly $1 sale Saturday morning. I found a couple of Chicago Bears t-shirts for my son, which he was happy with. My favorite purchase was a blue Talbot's fleece vest. We went to a Mardi Gras parade Saturday night and I wore it under my jacket. It kept me nice and cozy.

I made a conscious decision to recycle and buying pre-owned and used is a staple in my life . I am a recycle artist and I encourage all to donate usable furniture and office items, clothing books and magazines, housewares also sporting goods and tools too to charities and recycle newspapers and paper goods -cans -metal -bottles and glass, and plastics-, remember to dispose of hazardous materials such as paint and oil cans and chemical containers , batteries too, properly ask your local recycle center. I also ask you to buy pre-owned items.

I am definitely thrifty! That's why I love OLS so much, I have gotten so many freebies that come in handy--all the Wal*Mart samples and stuff. Unfortunately we don't have thrift stores really close by, but I do love that Dollar Tree! You can sometimes even get kids clothing there and they sell socks there for all ages, too besides everything else they sell.

I'm a proud penny pincher, goes with the hippie lifestyle. Today I am wearing a gorgeous agate and sterling silver pendant that I bought at etsy for $3.75 SHIPPING INCLUDED:cheer3:
My penny pincher advice is to check your phone company for bundle programs
that will save you money. I havbe upgraded our internet and home phone with assorted features and am only paying $5 more than I was for dial up and now have voicemail, DSL, unlimited calling etc.
If you are a happy homemaker who cooks from scratch, check your local outside markets for seconds. These are bumped and bruised fruits and veggies they sell dirt cheap. If you make your own sauces, jams, and babyfood, you don't use a whole fruit anyway. This summer I was scoring bushel baskets of bruised and split tomatos for $2. 1/3 of the basket was shot after sorting, but you simply can't beat the price for the remaining usable produce.

Plant a garden in the Summer, that's what we do for cheap produce! Start up costs for the year are for seeds and plants, the rest is labor, water, (free if you have a well, like we do, or you use rain barrels to collect water) and dirt!

I am super thrifty! I shop thrift stores, Goodwill and rummage sales. I love finding a bargain. I get a super endorphine rush when I find an awesome deal.
I hate paying retail price for anything. I would much rather buy something gently used, or if I have to resort to retail I will only buy it if it is on sale, clearance or I have a coupon.

I'm definately a thrifty shopper! I very rarely pay full price for anything and i love thrift stores. I don't like Goodwill & Salvation Army as much anymore around here. THey have gone up on their prices. I even seen a dollar tree item at Salvation Army for 1.50! I mean come on. Its a thrift store you are supposed to have thrifty prices!
I now goto a new thrift store thats through the Catholic Church. I loovvvveeeee it! Everyone is always so nice there! And the prices are VERY resonable. They'll even give you stuff sometimes. We were there the other day and they gave DH & I a Simon Says game that we were playing with. If you have a Catholic Church near you, you should see if they have a thrift store. We had no idea about this one and its been there for years. I'm thrilled to have found it!!!

Call me thrifty!
Love the local WellSpring, resale shop here in town... Was there last week and saw a guy bring in a pickup full of stuff. In the pile was a brand new chair and a half with attached ottoman in green gingham (still had tags). I asked the store worker how much and he replied 95.00. I jumped on it since I had a 20% off coupon from the store... What a deal and its perfect in my livingroon!

No retail for us either, if it's not on sale...we wait.
Luckily, that is one thing that my daughter did pick up and is not stubborn about.
OK, I washed out baggies that we used for freezing the other day...everyone made fun of me, but hey, I was happy LOL
Can you can Goodwill and ask when they have sale days?

See, this is something I wish I could do. I have never been able to buy groceries like a lot of members here have posted. It might be because, we don't have any double coupon stores here and they also don't accept printed coupons.
For everyone-
Start writing to companies you enjoy purchasing from. A majority of them will send you coupons, sometimes even for free products. It really helps. Check coupon boards also if you are in need of certain coupons. I need to sit down and write some more companies. I have only contacted a few.

Yea--nice to find like minded people. The thrift threads are some of my favorites at OLS. My thrift store has an email list so you know the special days--you could ask your goodwill if they do this.
RE: couponing, I do it for toiletries, but have backed off on most prepared food as I find that most things I can make cheaper than a coupon, and it's healthier too.
I've gotten my 4 YO DS into the action too. A few months ago I was looking for a special "mommy and son" activity on a Saturday as we had a newborn and he was getting a little jealous. So I'm scouring for movies, basketball game, etc. and he asks me out of the blue "Mommy, can we go to a yard sale?" I almost cried out of joy!

You can pay your phone and cable bills with credit cards?
We try to put everything we can on credit cards so that we get rewards, but we make sure it's paid off at the end of each month.

Sign me up for this group for sure!! I am Cheap with a capitol C!! It drives me crazy when I hear that somebody bought something and I know know know I could have found it cheaper!!
I have taught my husband how to be frugal (thank god) because at one time in his life he had no sense of the value of money. We are not gross cheap, like we dont steal ketchup packs from resturants and pour them into our ketchup bottle at home LMAO but I know how to get a deal, how to use coupons to my advantage, find discount codes for any online purchases, shop at thrift stores for almost new clothes & furnishings...
I could go on and on, feel free to pick my brain if you need any help.

I don't consider myself just plain cheap because I will pay for something if I really want it. I also have certain things I won't scrimp on. (I just make sure I can get them on sale, LOL!)
To me, thrift is saving money and resources so that you (or someone else) can use them , whether it be for retirement, savings, or something else. I consider myself thrifty because we try not to waste anything, whether it be money, food, water, etc.
I think thrift and recycling go hand in hand!

I don't steal condiment packets from restaurants... however I've noticed when we order out at work that these places send wayyyy too many packets of mustard, ketchip, salad dressing salt, pepper etc.some thing goes for Dunkin Donuts..those artifical sweeteners cost a fortune and they put a ton of them in the bag! I have no problem bringing those home,it's awesome to have them when you're packing lunches and I appreciate not having to buy sweet low, equal or splendia so often.

I'm a firm believer in the idea that for many families the spiral downward into fiscal crisis often begins because they dont have $1,000 in savings to cover themselves in case of emergency expense.
Do you have your $1,000 tucked away?

I would consider my self frugal.
I shop at my local supermarket for the marked down meats and separate them into servings and freeze them. Once in a while they will have certains things on sale that I will buy if I have coupons.
I shop at Target for some items, and since they accept coupons, I save there also.
I am a big big fan of Dollar Tree, 99 cent stores, and family dollar I have found so many great things there for so little. I have gone to the supermarket and seen some of these same items for so much more.
I also shop for clothes at a place called Susies Deals. Nothing over 5.99 many times things are 3 for $5.00 they even have things on sale for 1.00. Some of these things are really nice looking.
So everywhere I shop I save money.
Glad that there are more people out there like me. This is a great group.

DH and I will "splurge" on Chinese once a month.. we go for the lunch combos.. get one a piece.. drink water.. and get the 10% seniors discount.. so for $13 plus change (includes tip) we get 2 meals as well. If we absolutely need a taste of soda, we can have a can or bottle in the truck and drink when we get out..
The thing I don't like.. we used to share drinks.. but now with free refills everywhere, I don't think it's kosher.. I'm talking about sit-down restaurants. Like in Friendly's .. we could share a chocolate shake... there is no refill on it.. but I don't drink a lot of soda and to order 2 is usually a waste. But now that 99% of restaurants have free refills, even though we may not even need a refill, we don't feel right doing it anymore.
Now another thing we save on.. paper napkins.. if the napkin is one of those big thick ones, DH and I will split one... tear it in half. The cheap thin ones won't work!

It totally didn't work for me. Josh and I coupon--but we don't have time to do the type of couponing where you get $400 worth of groceries for a penny. I mostly use coupons from the sunday paper, plus my friends send me their coupons. That being said, we save an average of a third of our bill--I think it's pretty good! And we cook mostly from scratch too...
Josh wanted me to write in his thrifty find. He found an expensive car part ($560) online for $16. It was likely mis-priced but what a deal!

Same here. Josh has to dress professionally. We went to Calvin Klein this weekend and they were having a HUGE sale, 70% off the reduced prices, which were already around 50% off. He got two pairs of pants for $20 each--originally $144! They fit well and will last a long time. It was a great find. He does most of his work clothes shopping at CostCo--they get a lot of nice pants and shirts in.

Yesterday was half-price clothing day at "Armyvation." I've been on Weight Watchers since last May, and was able to fit perfectly into another size smaller jeans. I would have paid $500 for that moment , but paid $2.50 for like-new Levis and $2.00 for another pair of like-new jeans.
Another great deal this week: Some sweeps sent me a $5.00 Lady Footlocker gift card. I bought a pair of cute RBK shoes for my daughter for $9.99 (on clearance--only size left) less the $5 card. $4.99 plus tax!

that's great!!!
i got this recipe for a basic cake from a friend--put ingredients in one at a time after first two, when you get to the flour, do it a little at the time and bake at 325 degrees for 30 minutes in four cake pans (put batter in evenly)
1 cup vegetable oil
2 cups sugar
3 eggs
1 tsp vanilla
1 cup of milk
2 cups of flour
when you get the cakes cooked, cooled you can top with your favorite frostings, chocolate, cream cheese/whipped cream--whatever

Bread is gettig more and more expensive! I made the bread in this recipe and it turned out so well!!! Best bread I ever made. It makes a peasant-type loaf (round with a crispy crust and fluffy insides) and the only cost is for 3 cups flour, 1/4 tsp yeast, about a tsp salt and running the oven - SO CHEAP! If I didn't have a problem with my digital camera right now, I would post a picture of my loaf!

This was on the news this morning. I guess the price of wheat has gone up dramatically, as more farmers are growing corn instead because of government subsidies for ethanol. They said bread could be up over $4 a loaf soon!

I took any free coupons I received in the mail this week from sweeps and freebies to the grocery store yesterday. I wound up getting $40 worth of groceries (would have been more but, a few things was on clearance) for $21.95
2 Pepperidge farm products (1 cake, 1 bag of goldfish crackers) FREE
4 20 oz bottles coke FREE
1 pk yogurt shots FREE
1 pk Kids yoplait yogurt FREE
1 8 pk dannon yogurt on clearance (dates still good) $1.50
1 box of pumpkin pie gems kit $1.50 on clearance
and then some other items I needed. I would have got free bread with my coupon but, they didn't sell the brand (rainbo) so I need to check other stores for it. I got so much yogurt because, it makes great snacks and my kids and I love yogurt. I would have bought more if I knew they wouldn't expire before we could eat them all.

Hey Miki~
About the yogurt.... you can freeze it, and then it's like ice cream for the kids. My kids love to put their yogurt in the freezer. Ya might try it and see if they like it!

oh and this week I did an inhome research study and shop along, I'm now expecting a hefty check, enough money to pay for heating oil for March and April, getting us safely thru our first heating season in this new house.
I'm only using about 50 gallons of oil a month so I think we've done well.

If anyone has an albertson's circular and can get there or have Walmart Price match they have those nature valley bars for one dollar, cereals for a dollar and fruit roll ups for a dollar. There are coupons out there for all three. Less than a buck yall and some at my Walmart were pushing four bucks (fruit roll ups). Not sure if this is good in all states but in Florida till tuesday this is going great.

For CVS this week, you can get three bags of either Cadbury Eggs or Hershey's Kisses for .50 a bag when you combine a $1.50 off three bags manufacturers' coupon with a .99 each sale at CVS!
Here's a link for a $5 off $15 coupon if you have other items to buy as well:

I had to share my shopping victory ! A sponsor of an ongoing premuim sweep has been sending out flyers with coupons for their products, one of the coupons is good for $2.00 off ANYTHING in your favorite store, the sponsor keeps flooding my mailbox with these flyers.
I cut out 20 of those $2.00 coupons and went to stop and shop. They had a ton of manager's special packages of steak and chicken with the $2.00 off per package peelie.
I made a few trips thru the line.. the green buck coupon worked with the manger's $2.00 peelie! Knocked $80 off my grocery bill, filled my freezer with steak and chicken
now here's the best part, I'm sitting on the hood of the car waiting for my husband to get the propane, all of a sudden I notice a bit of green sticking out from under the front whell of a shopping cart a few feet away.. there's a $20 bill.
The meat ended up being almost free and my husband thinks me a genuis and that contest sponsor is my new best friend! getting high value coupons that you can use for meat, milk or produce is a godsend!

Wow! That really is awesome. I got one of those $2 coupons also and was kind of confused by it. You didn't have any problems having it rung up at all?

I used the coupons at stop and shop.. they say very plainly that they are good for ANYTHING in your favorite store..the only restriction I can see is that you can't combine them with a manufactures coupon. If you were going to buy say a bag of purinia dry cat food for $3.19 and you had a $2 coupon, plus a coupon from Purinia for a $1.00 off the cat food you could use one or the other but not both at the same time.
However, since the scanner took both the $2.00 coupon, plus the $2.00 manger's discount peelie I'm guessing that the restriction doesn't apply to using the coupon along with store issued coupons or discounts. YMMV though. I'll be going to Target tommorrow and will test this as I've got some Target c/o's and will see if I can use both. lol,if I can it'll be just like Xmas:)
