Here is one daschund mommy. My mini is named Rambo because all daschunds think they are Dobermans. This breed is also so independent he often reminds me of a cat attitude. He grew up with cats and loves them, doesn't understand why they all seem to cop a 'tude with him. He will just sit back a few feet while they spit and sneak up as they mellow out trying to play with them. He is getting to be an old man tho, he's 12 years old this month. Thanks for the chance. He is black with brown. :offwall:

I have 2mini's, Annie and Jake. They are the biggest babies, they have to be in the same room I am throughout the day. Almost like have 2 kids around, can't even go to the bathroom without them following me.:grin2:
I love these dogs.

She has Dixie (my baby) & Dolly (my brother's).
Dolly is a mini dapple. She is BEAUTIFUL. A little chunky, but my gosh, she is the prettiest dog :D She will be 6 this year.

& here is Dixie (a mini weenie dog also) with our old cat Patches. I was given Dixie right after my gradpa passed away - I was broken hearted. Dixie will be 13 this June. She is the sweetest dog.

I have 3 minis. Jackson is chocolate and Maia is black and tan. I kept one of their pups who was the runt of the litter, and named her L'il Bit. She is a year old and still only 6 pounds....looks like her Mom in minature.
All 3 have distinct personalities...Jackson is very laid back and lovable...he sleeps with a blankie and is the last out of bed in the morning. Maia is very smart and intense. She is the dominant "Mom" of the group and lets me know when the others are getting into trouble. L'il Bit is the ball player...very outgoing and loves to meet new people.
Maia is having a litter in the next couple of weeks!
Jackson and Maia are 6 months old in the photo. I have portraits done once a year and this was the only one I could size down small enough. I need to get more candids...

I had one as a kid and it took me 10 years to be ready to get another dog after he passed. Of course, I moved out and started my own family in the meantime. So, now we have Gus. He's going to be 13 on April 3. He gave us quite a health scare this past summer, but he's good now. Well, actually, we think he may be going deaf or is definitely deaf in one ear. Case in point: someone came to the door yesterday and rang the bell, knocked loudly on the door and rang the bell again and Gus didn't even flinch (he was sleeping on his pad *with blankie* in the same room). You all know how RARE that would be. Other years, he'd be trying to bust through the wood door!!!

We have scooter and maisy- he's a chocolate dapple and shes a red mini- he is old and has diabetes and was in not so good shape when the vet suggested a companion pet - we got maisy and the entire family loves her so but she's scooters girl, he took to her in a maternal way, I was surprised, cleaning her and snuggling with her. they are so cute playing and wrestling - running outside- scooter use to just nap now he's a proud papa.--maisy looks like your Dixie. and scooter was an adult dog in the paper the add said weener dog $40. we checked it out and brought him home that was almost 8 years ago.

while i'm thinking about it i was going to ask, has anyone tried training your doxie to use the doggie steps? I got two sets for Christmas. I put them next to eachother so they have more room to go up the steps and Roscoe & Weenie wont use them unless i force them. I've tried food and I've tried putting them on the steps and they usually just sit there or jump off. Shy-Anne on the other hand, who doesnt even need the steps as she is a great jumper (shes got some long legs) uses the steps! Go figure!! Any suggestions on how to get the stubborn doxies to do what mommy wants them to do? I wanted the steps because I know how common dachshunds can have problems with their back and with Weenie & Roscoe already getting up there in age I worry about their backs.

These steps are so great for doxies! My two females bound up the steps for a treat with no problem...of course they are only 2-years-old and 3-years-old, so still pretty trainable. Jackson, my 3 year-old male, is shy and tentative about everything, including steps.
I would put the dog on a leash and gently guide/lead him up the steps to a treat. Then praise him to the hilt.
Also, have you ever used real bones as treats/rewards. I get oxtail from the meat dept at Winn Dixie and simmer' til the bits of meat are cooked. When my doxies are stubborn, I can get them to do ANYTHING for these treats!

These babies LOVE cheese and I tried using cheese as a bribe but that didnt help. Weenie when he gets to the top step he'll just lean his head over the bed and he'll try and grab the cookie without getting on the bed LoL He's like a snail! I wish the top step was flush with the bed but its not its just a little bit higher and they act like they dont wanna take that extra step LOL Like its too much for them

I have puppies! Maia went into labour around 8 AM and delivered around 2 PM.
We have a chocolate/ tan female and a black/ tan female. Dad is chocolate and Maia is black and tan. So exciting! All 3 are snuggled up sleeping/feeding.
This will be Maia's last litter...it is her third. I will miss the experience. She stays curled up in blankets (with towels laid down) in my bed when she starts labour. I move her into the breeding box at the last minute, which is placed on my bed. I sit with her and help out, if needed. I will never get over the miracle of birth and I love having puppies in the house! I have also enjoyed sharing this wonderful breed with other families.

My little guy (will be 13 on April 2) had a bloody nose Friday night. Let me tell you how unnerving that is!!! Then, he did again on Saturday. I called the vet (closed) and after he was paged, we agreed I should take him in to the animal E-R. They did bloodwork to the tune or $416, but nothing came up.
We googled it. Most likely there's a tumor somewhere up in his head. To find that out for sure, it would be nearly $1,000 to stick a scope up his nose. To do so, they need to knock him out and there's no guarantees that he'd come out of it.
I had the appointment scheduled for today because NO blood Sunday or Monday and no other symptoms (still hungry as ever and alert as ever and NO pain shown).
We cried our faces of Saturday night in acceptance that we're just going to take each day as a gift.
What would you do?

What would you do?
My parents old Golden Retriever got a bloody nose and he was 13 I believe. He would sneeze and it would go everywhere, it was awful. It would stop for days, then you'd see specks of blood and he'd have one. Vet said as long as he was eating, etc, and didn't seem to be in pain that we should just let him stick around home and just love him. Well, the day came they had to take him in and the doc said it was more than likely cancer/tumor (said it initially too when symptoms were explained) and we were doing the right thing. I just think maybe at some point you just have to use your best judgement. I know it's a hard choice to make but honestly I think there's certain things at a certain age that vets from experience should not let you waste your money on and get the doggy all worked up over. Just take care of him and love him, at least that's what I would think would be the best. I hope I don;t sound cruel, I just don't see putting him through a bunch if there's basically no cure, make sense? I'm one who would take out a second mortgage to save one of my pets but I guess there's just some things that money can't fix.
I'll say a pup prayer for the baby. Honestly, he may stick around for quite awhile. To clarify though, when Cody would get a bloody nose sometimes it was just a fews drops, but other times he would sneeze and it would be like bloody snot or clots. He would still play and seemed very happy but just turned for the worse one day. I hope no one thinks I'm awful for saying what I have but considering his age and the stress testing and such would put him though I just say love him and let him continue to have a good life for now.:hugs:

I think WeenieMommie has good advice. I know it must be heart-breaking, but I think that loving him for as long as he has got is the best thing you can do.
I've spent a lot on my dogs for fixable problems, but if all this procedure is going to do is verify the tumor, I'd leave him in peace and let him enjoy the time he has left.
So sorry that you are going through this...it must be awful to lose an old friend.
Jackie9641
March 6th, 2008, 8:00pm
Thanks. It is horrible. We aren't going to do anything. I fully agree with your comments. So, I pay $1,000 to verify it's a tumor -- there's no way I'd put him through surgery or chemo at this age and the scope to find out if it's a tumor would probably kill him anyway.
I'm just looking at every day as a gift. Not a drop of blood since Saturday. We had always said that we're buying a new bed the day after he dies (ours is horribly old, but very low to the ground -- which is good for him). Now, we'll probably have to buy new carpeting (if the bloody noses come back) too!
I just don't understand how a tumor makes him have nose bleeds. Tens of thousands of people are walking around every day with some kind of cancer -- but they're not bleeding everywhere.

I am sorta happy that this happened on a Saturday when their internist doctor wasn't there (she works M-F). I probably would have gone through with the $800 rhinoscope then. So, I'm glad I didn't do that.

I'm so happy to hear he's doing well. I hope you didn't think I was being cold before. I just know Mom's old GR was the same way and he held on for quite some time with just an occasional spell. He may never do it again, or it may just happen now and then. Whatever happens just love him up and let him know you're there. They can suprise you. My Mom has swore to me that her one old dog was dying for the past 5 years. I had bought her as a pup from a backyard breeder who had cut her ears with scissors and had men there buying her siblings and her if I wouldn;t have taken her to fight. At the time I was just old enough to work and took my paycheck and drove over two hours to get her, scary place too. The vet just shakes his head when he sees her, can't believe she's still around. Her life started off pretty bad, genetic mange and all plus what would have beena short life span to a great loving home. I don't think she'd be here though if she wasn't loved so much.
Sorry to babble, really glad to hear some good news though!

Seriously though, I'm no expert but I'd say you've got the idea. Quiet place, welping box. Maybe get one of those booger suckers (sorry) for babies just in case, a heating pad (just in case), some extra towels/clean blanket, and most important I'd say would be a 24 hour number for a vet.
Don't worry, you got this, it's going to be fine! You're gonna make a good Grandparent ;).

Oh you are in for a wonderful experience!!!
I've birthed several healthy dachshund litters. Here are some of the things I've learned.
1. Most new moms get right to work cleaning and caring for their pups. It amazed me how my "babies" turned into supermoms in a matter of minutes.
2. Pups come out both headfirst and feet first, either is ok.
3. Get some rubber surgical gloves. Most dogs will labour to push the pups fully out on their own. But if it appears that one is stuck halfway, you can VERY gently pull on it to help her.
4. If the mom doesn't break the sac immediately, cut a small hole in the sac with a pair of sterilized manicure scissors. Let her eat the first afterbirth...it has a lot of nutrition. Don't let her eat the remaining afterbirths...it will make her sick.
5. Have a bag and paper towels nearby to put the discarded afterbirth in. Every pup comes in it's own sac. My experience has been that the mom will chew the umbilical cord completely off.
6. Have a shoebox with soft cloth nearby. As she births a new puppy, put the others safely in the box so that she doesn't accidentally step on them. Return them to mom asap. Keep them warm...drafts can kill a newborn.
7. Occasionally a puppy will appear dead and not cry when born. Put the puppy in your cupped hands with its head facing towards your finger tips. Then swing your hands from above your head downwards a couple of times. This forces the fluid out of their breathing passages.
8. I birth on clean old towels or flannel sheets, and have some on hand to change out, once the mom is finished cleaning the pups. Don't use newspaper with print. Plain paper is fine if you want.
9. Buy a tiny bottle and small can of puppy milk from PetSmart (less than $5.00) Occasionally a new pup is too weak to nurse.
10. If a pup is not suckling withing 15 minutes after birth, show it how. Open its mouth and put the nipple in. Squeeze gently on the breast to expel a few drops of milk. You may have to work at it.
11. Have both your vet's number and emergency animal hospital number nearby.
12. Make sure that mom's nails are clipped short and smooth. As she learns how to maneoveur into nursing position she may accidentally step on a pup.
That's all I can think of right now. Please PM me if you have any questions. Relax, good luck, and enjoy!

What a bunch of cute babies!
We just recently are owned by our dachsund, Scooter. Someone had dropped the poor dear off at the animal shelter at only 12 weeks old and although we stopped "just to look" we could not help but bring him home! :)

I didn't see this thread until now.
My sweet baby is soon to turn 10 years old. He is the sweetest dog you would ever meet, and you can bet, I'm as devoted to him as he is to me.
I loved reading about everyone's dachsies. They are great, aren't they?
I hope we get to see pictures of the pups as soon as possible!

Here he is, having his annual birthday treat tonight since I'll be gone all day tomorrow. He's the one who has had that bloody nose (and since then, an infection on one of his toes). I don't know if there will be a 14th birthday, but he's my baby and we love him so much!

I don't post on OLS often, but I'm on everyday.
Two weeks ago, we adopted the most wonderful dachshund from a family that needed to find him a new home due to allergies. He is amazing --- smart, trained, gentle with my kids --- I could go on and on. We feel like we hit the dog lottery!
He came with the name Max and is a two year old, red, standard doxie.
I'm not sure how to insert pictures here, but if I ever figure it out, I'll put one up. I love all the pictures everyone has posted!

Hi Stacey! Congrats to your family and Max for finding each other!
My photos are too big to put on here but there has to be another way. My computer is so slow and I'm just not too savvy when it comes to those types of tasks sometimes. I look forward to seeing Max though and sharing photos of my herd when I figure it out. :gvibes:

Ah yes, they are some snuggin' babies. THey make it hard to get out of bed, they all snug up with me and sleep.
Everyone is ready for bed now. They're all looking at me like come on Mom, lol. I'm a nite owl anyhow but I had a bad night. I went to the store to try and walk a bit (I have a bit of trouble with my legs and back back so I'll go to the store in the late night to avoid people and get a bit of walking in) and I actually had a pretty god time, when I left I drove past my parents home that's about 5 minutes from mine on the way back to the small stretch of freeway a man (and I use that term loosely) that had came around my car before the last stop sign ju,pe dout of his car and tried to attack me. Thankfully my doors were locked but as I was trying to get away he slammed his fists onto the back end of my car then hopped in his and followed me onto the freeway. I called 911 and the police met me at a nearby business, made no report but were going to the address of the person to 'talk with them'. WHAT"S WRONG WITH PEOPLE? I'm not sure what was wrong with him, what he thought he was going to do, it just makes me sick. I'm already alone all the time with DH working 2 jobs. I hardly get out and when I do this happens. Just so upsetting.
Anyhow, sorry to go off topic but thanks for listening.

This is Fluffy. My two smooth-hairs threw a long-hair. She is beautiful and has personality plus. I had a very hard time letting her go...still feel sad when I look at her photos. She went to a good home. Her owner is 17 years-old and dresses her in doggie clothes ...groan. But I met the whole family. They live in the country out by me, with a menagerie of pets that are well taken care of.
I spayed my two females after this last litter. I really enjoyed the experience of bringing a total of seven mini-dachshunds into the world and raising them in my home. They are such wonderful dogs and went to good homes. But I heard what people had to say about overcrowded shelters and decided to stop breeding. Plus, I was getting so attached to the pups that I decided to stop putting myself through that pain.

Jacklyn,
I really respect your decision. I wish there wasn't a problem and we could all have loads of babies all the time. Puppy breathe is the best. :mm:
What a sweet little girl! That would be my problem, I'd want to keep them all and grieve when they were gone. I have to admit to you, we've got some little doggy clothes here :tiptoe:, lol. Though they prefer to be naked babies they will shove each other out of the way to put clothes on when they see them, especially in the winter. Very hard to find a good fit though, wish I was able to make some for them.

We have a pet specialty store here and they sell clothes especially for doxies. I think it is funny when people dress up their pet to extreme...bows, ballerina costumes, cheerleading costumes. I think the sweaters and wearable blankets are a good idea. One item for Hallowe'en is cute for pics, and my dogs wear hats on their birthday.
She loves to brush Fluffy and put in bows and dress her in sequined costumes. Fluffy doesn't seem to mind...I know my Doxies love lots of attention.

Once she warmed up she wiggled out of it. she burrows under the covers at night sometimes in the day I'll look for her and she has worked her way under the covers and even though the bed is made there she is a lump underneath all snuggled and sleeping.

sorry i neglected ya'll so much! LOL I always forget to check this thread but i'm going to subscribe so i wont forget.
I love those pics PGRIFF. I wish i could get our babies to sit still long enough to take pretty pictures like that. The only way i can get them to sit still long enough is to say cheese (thats their cookie LOL) and they'll look at me real quick. Gotta snap quick or they'll run when they sell i dont have any cheese LOL
Someone mentioned nailclipping. I never have to cut Roscoe's nails. Hes always running around somewhere and he keeps them wore down. Shy-Anne i clip every now and then but she usually is pretty active. Roscoe hates getting his clipped. I think his previous owner hurt him cutting his nails and he still remembers. Shy-Anne is pretty good although she is more intrested in eatting her nails after their cut so we gotta sweep them up quick LOL Weenie is excellent. He just lays on his back and lets me cut them while hes asleep.
OH b4 i forget i wanted to ask a question. Lately we've been having some bad thunderstorms every day. Weenie is expecially scared during this time. He tries to hide behind our washer. I b locked it off with a box but yesterday he was pushing the box out of the way trying to go under it to hide LOL If he can't hide there he hides behind the toilet. Roscoe and shy-anne get scared but no where near like the way he does. Does anyone have any suggestions on what i should do for him? I thought about giving him a benadryll (sp?) before i know a storm is coming to see if that would relax him but iunno. I heard that vets sometimes give dogs valium but i really dont wanna go that far. Are your doxies afraid of thunder too?

This going to sound silly, but I have talked to my dogs about the big "boom, booms" as if it is no big deal. I also try and drown out the noise with music or a movie. But I really am lucky. I work from home, so I gather all three into my really big recliner with me and watch a movie when it storms. I bought that chair oversized so that we could all sit together in the evenings. I'm also lucky in that I have three...so they are a source of comfort to each other.

It's funny that you say yours comfort eachother cuz my three do too. Or rather Shy-Anne & Roscoe try to comfort poor weenie lol
I do sit with them though. I take them into the bedroom and i turn the tv on loud but our walls are thin and they can still hear the thunder. I'm worried about when we're gone though and Weenie getting scared. I hate leaving him when i know a storm is coming cuz he gets so scared. Thats why we try not to leave if we can help it.

I tell come on in and have her drop it ..it was a 1/3 eaten green tomato from out garden ..that I guess a squirrel dropped . so I traded her for a treat. man .... OMG. My 13 year old guy who likes to have dying episodes every few months has done a doozy. He’s lost one of his molars behind the canine (upper jaw). We noticed it due to some blood – not tons, mind you. I couldn’t bear to look, but my husband says it’s a huge, gaping, bloody hole that goes all the way up. He’s been cursed with bad teeth his whole life. My vet and I actually have agreed the last many years that it’s not worth putting him under to clean his teeth any longer – too risky. So, we’ve endured the horrible breath.
I’m going to get him to the vet as soon as possible tomorrow. Here’s my prayer: he gets a shot of antibiotic, gets antibiotic pills; they give me tips to help the hole heal: soft food, ice to stop bleeding, etc. AND THAT’S IT. I’m so worried that they’ll want to put him under and stitch it up, flush out the hole, etc. I just know to the depth of my soul that he’d never live through it.
Anyone live through something like this? Any thoughts? I know it would be better to be more aggressive, but he’s too old & frail to go under anesthesia. It’s not a question of the $$, I just don’t want to do something and have him die because of it. He’s acting totally normal right now. Showing no pain signs, ears are up, tail is up, etc.

Our new rescue doxie has horrible teeth too. The breath will knock you down but she can't be put under either for any procedure. The Dr said no vet in his right mind would put a dog under at her age (she's approx 15 years old). I imagine we'll be having the same issues too. I will keep your pup in my prayers. Dogs are pretty tough so I think he'll be ok.
