Awesome!
I been have digging thru gigabytes of files trying to find some of my poetry. Can't find the one I was looking for, so I will have to rewrite from memory. Only one I found that was one of my favorites is a pretty depressing one, I didn't want it to be my first contribution... LOL I will save it til the group is more established.
Be back when I have dug that poem out of the cobwebs of my brain.

Okay... close as I can remember it (look at the date at the bottom) this is my poem and life creed. I think it qualifies as my application to this group LOL
I am me,
No one can change that.
I alone have the power
To change and beautify my inner self.
If I dislike others,
I can avoid them;
Or tolerate them
But I have to live with me.
Do I like others?
In order to like others ~
I must first like myself.
I must try to see myself
As others see me … imperfect
I must look at myself as in a mirror
And justify the contents
This takes the most difficult type of honesty.
Do I understand others?
In order to understand others,
I must try to hear what they are not saying;
What they perhaps may never be able to say.
And when they tell me secrets,
Remember…
They have given me a part of themselves
I must never misuse that trust.

Please someone help me... I was thinking about this group last night, traveling down memory lane... and now I have this song stuck in my head.
The theme to "Billy Jack" AKA "One Tin Soldier"
One Tin Soldier (The Legend of Billy Jack)
by Lambert-Potter, sung by Coven
Listen, children, to a story
That was written long ago,
'Bout a kingdom on a mountain
And the valley-folk below.
On the mountain was a treasure
Buried deep beneath the stone,
And the valley-people swore
They'd have it for their very own.
Go ahead and hate your neighbor,
Go ahead and cheat a friend.
Do it in the name of Heaven,
You can justify it in the end.
There won't be any trumpets blowing
Come the judgement day,
On the bloody morning after....
One tin soldier rides away.
So the people of the valley
Sent a message up the hill,
Asking for the buried treasure,
Tons of gold for which they'd kill.
Came an answer from the kingdom,
"With our brothers we will share
All the secrets of our mountain,
All the riches buried there."
Go ahead and hate your neighbor,
Go ahead and cheat a friend.
Do it in the name of Heaven,
You can justify it in the end.
There won't be any trumpets blowing
Come the judgement day,
On the bloody morning after....
One tin soldier rides away.
Now the valley cried with anger,
"Mount your horses! Draw your sword!"
And they killed the mountain-people,
So they won their just reward.
Now they stood beside the treasure,
On the mountain, dark and red.
Turned the stone and looked beneath it...
"Peace on Earth" was all it said.
Go ahead and hate your neighbor,
Go ahead and cheat a friend.
Do it in the name of Heaven,
You can justify it in the end.
There won't be any trumpets blowing
Come the judgement day,
On the bloody morning after....
One tin soldier rides away.
Go ahead and hate your neighbor,
Go ahead and cheat a friend.
Do it in the name of Heaven,
You can justify it in the end.
There won't be any trumpets blowing
Come the judgement day,
On the bloody morning after....
One tin soldier rides away.

I would love to read some homemade cleaning agent recipes you guys. I use what's on sale or I have a coupon for.
I make my own glass cleaner with water, little vinegar, squirt of dish soap. If I have soap making scent on hand, or lemon extract, I'll add that so it smells nice.
Is Doc Bronners the all purpose cleaner all it's cracked up to be?

Have you guys noticed how much some places charge for bath salts?
A few years ago I started making my own. My legs and hips have always bothered me ( result from all the broken bones as an infant under the care of sadistic drug addict womb and sperm donaters) So I soak alot.
Here's how I make mine:
1 half gallon size pachage of epsom salts. I can usually find that size for around $2 :yesyes:
2-4 cups sea salt depending on package sizes available to you. I buy my sea salt in the spice section, the sea salt sold in the natural section is triple the price. Look towards the bottom shelf, I buy a greek brand for $2.29 a container which holds approx 2 cups.
There are other brands at eye level that are way more expensive:look:
You choice of essential oils ( or you can purchase cheaper fragrances at a craft store) and dried herbs.
Now I purchases tin foil roasters to use as mixing containers so you don't get stuff on your food prep items.
Have an assortment of jars ready, canisters etc.
Mix your salts together, then divide into however many scents you'll be creating. I usually do a batch or sensual, energizing and a relaxing batch:soapbox:
Energizing, citrus, eucalyptus, mint, grean tea
Relaxing lavander, lilac, rose, cedar etc
Sensual, frankincense ( expensive) patchouli, amber, cedar, musk
It's easy peasy. Mix in the oils, herbs etc. Let dry an hour or so in the pan. Pour into tightly closed jars. That's is it. you can drizzle you salts with almond or jojoba oils to add extra moisturizing benefits.
Now. I do not add anti caking agents to my salts, so at times they get a little hard in the jar. Just tap it around to get it loose. I use 2 to 3 cups of salt in my bath. If you scrimp on salt you won't get the maximum muscle aching relief benfits. I also double the recipe.

Have you thought of adding glycerin or honey?
I live near the Great Salt Lake - which has the second highest salinity % (after the Dead Sea). I wish they would harvest sea salt from there other than for dietary purposes.

I find we go through a lot of disposable diaper wipes, even using Seventh Generation wipes that's just a lot of waste. So at home, I use cloth wipes and a homemade wipe solution to cut down on both costs and waste. It's so easy, and I thought I'd share with anyone that was interested. It's even easier if you cloth diaper at least p/t, because then the dirty wipes just go in your diaper pail and into the wash with the diapers.
Select wipes to use. We use 100% cotton - I just picked up some unbleached cotton flannels that are so soft and nice and thick. We also have some bamboo wipes, but I don't find them quite as soft or absorbent as the cotton. Usually you can find cotton baby washcloths on sale at places like Target, these work great! We then mix 3-4 cups of water, a small squirt or two of whatever baby wash you use (we prefer something chemical free, organic and non-toxic), and a couple of drops of tea tree oil. The tree tea oil inhibits any bacteria or fungus. This solution is good for 3-4 days of typical use. You can store your cloths in the solution, or dip as you go - whatever is more convenient.
We keep ours in a wipe warmer. (CAUTION - this is not the way wipe warmers are intended to be used, and I am in no way responsible for any misuse. Please use the following advice at your own risk!) We removed the pad that came with the warmer (Prince Lionheart brand). We pour a cup or two of solution in the warmer, then we stuff it full of wipes. I try to get at least 2-3 dozen in there. We then pour the rest of the solution over the wipes. Be careful not to overfill the warmer, and UNPLUG the warmer while refilling. Every 3-4 days we wipe the warmer out and start all over again!

Just wanted to remind people to check in their area for Habitat For Humanity resell stores when working on the home. One came to our area and it's a great way to use scraps from larger products, get it at a good price, and keep the money going back into the organization.
You can find carpeting for small hallways or closets, drywall, paint etc....

I'm a contradication. Truely.
I'm a closet hippie.
Maybe a lot of us baby boomers are?
I call myself the perennial Mom.
I don't wear tie dyed shirts, burkinstockes, never have listened to the Dead.
I did wear a peace sign necklace in my youth.
Went to the Oregon Country Fair (Hippe Fest) once, when I was a student at
University of Oregon - decades ago. Once was enough, too much
public nakedness. I also moved on and don't like crowds.
I'm very conservative, no drinking, drugs, free sex, etc.
My brother was a hippe (today would be his birthday, RIP)
I do embrace some of the easy going lifestyle of the hippie culture.
I like stewardship of land, old growth trees, (maybe you saw my Plea for help, thread -
to save the old growth forest??) organics and recycling.
Love Van Morrision's music, too. Along with Carole King and Joni Mitchell.
I can be frugal. Like all cotton goods. Definately a foodie. I believe in alternative medicine, too.
Invest socially.
I would own an organic farm if I had lots of extra money.
I was into green building long before it was mainstream.
I've always liked alternative green power.
I wonder where Tofu, is?
I'm accepting of others.
I love God!
May you know the grace, love and peace that he provides.

For over 4 yrs I have worked for a lawncare company. I would always run into the "treehugggers" that touted how bad chemicals are...I would roll my eyes and go onto the next one...but with each one, it made me think.
I got laid off, long story short, I won't be going back to that company.
In the time that I have been laid off, I researched chemicals that the company used, pretty much the same thing that we, as consumers, can buy.
NOW, I feed the birds, squirrels, racoons and a family of squirrels.
NOW, I am leading a petition to stop the chemical application that can then run into the water.
NOW- I will be their worst pain in the @ss.

Does anyone know how to make homemade fabric softner? I use fabric softner to soften our rough ass clothes but worry about the chemicals. Anyone know of a homemade recipe? Or an alternative you've tried perhaps?

OK....what was the best Grateful Dead (or Dead related) show you have seen? If no show comes to mind....what Grateful Dead lyric is your favorite and why?
Winner gets 2 DVD bootlegs.....no, this is not official releases or professionally shot. But you can witness the Oops Concerts! In 1981, after selling less than 10 tickets to a show in Southern France, the Grateful Dead cancelled and headed for Amsterdam, where many of the U.S. tour heads went, rather than make the out of the way trip to S. France. Run on sentence aside, the GD did 2 unannounced shows at the Milkweg Club in Amsterdam. 300 or so heads a night got the treat of seeing the GD in an intimate setting and playing borrowed instruments. One of the shows, on Bob's birthday, marks the 1st appearance of Lovelight since PigPen had died. A beautiful thing to see, I have heard Phil Lesh interviewed where he said it wasn't planned and it jus kind of happened in the groove. You can see as the song takes steam Bob Weir turn to the rest of the band and nod....yes, he will take the vocals. If you're looking for some slick production, do not enter. If you are looking to witness history, a nice audience tripod set shot with incredible, close-your-eyes-if-you-wish-sound...then please do!

The last concert tour before Jerry died we had tickets to see the band. DH and I had never seen them.
Anywho I did something that I should not have and was hallucinating and claustrophobic BIG time. DH sold the tickets and we got a hotel room. The walls were breathing that night.
Long story short my favorite lyric would be from Friend of the Devil - a little somthing like this "Ran into the devil and he loaned me twenty bills. I spent the night in utah in a cave up in the hills."
cause I'm from Utah. :)

I never had the pleasure to witness a Dead show. Please don't hold that against my new found hippie status. It was only for lack of opportunity. I was always jealous of Dead Heads who hitched across country and followed the band. I was pretty young when Jerry Garcia died but remember my Dad was beside himself.
One of my favorite Dead songs is Attics of My Life.
In the attics of my life
Full of cloudy dreams unreal
Full of tastes no tongue can know
And lights no eye can see
When there was no ear to hear
You sang to me

OMG I wish! My best friend goes to burning man every year and I'm madly jelous of her too. I probably won't have the opportunity to take vacation time in August until I'm a doctor so I live vicariously thru her pics and stories lol. My one consolation is that I finally get to see Santana this spring at Jazz Fest which is blocks from my house. DH already put the request in at work for the day off lol.
I am definitely a hippie who was born a few generations too late . . . or perhaps right on time since we're heading for the real astrological age of aquarius. I was in 7th grade when I discovered the joys of Kerouac and the Dead lol and I've never been quite the same since. I walk a fine line since I've had to go into disguise mode to get into my dream profession of being a doctor but I've managed to prevent any brainwashing from taking hold lol. I see a naturopathic doctor as well as a MD and he says that I am "far to open minded to become a MD" lol. He even offered to get me into his alma mater but he understands that my goal is to be a surgeon and he agrees that there is a place for them in acute care etc.

OK....what was the best Grateful Dead (or Dead related) show you have seen?
It was just after I'd arrived in San Francisco (even though, at the time, I didn't realize that I'd "moved" -- I thought I was just on a short vacation). My friends (there were 12 of us staying in that tiny studio apartment) took me to Golden Gate Park where I wandered, wide-eyed, past the brightly painted buildings and towering fuschias, inhaling the scent of eucalyptus and smoke.
We had no timetable, no destination, and when we heard the sound of music drifting through the trees, we just followed it. We wandered the paths until we came upon a clearing filled with people and a furry, fuzzy band up on a stage. We joined the throng upon the grassy field and spent the rest of the day sipping Boone's Farm wine, listening to the sounds of Sugar Magnolia and Casey Jones, mingling with the crowd, and lying in the sun.
Ahem. Excuse me if I don't specify the year.

OK, it was 1970 or 71 when DexW, her best friends, Dennis and Renee, and I got tickets to see 3 Dog Night at the Arena in Milwaukee, WI.
I was in the Navy and we were paranoid about "smoking" during the show so Renee said she would bake us some "magic" brownies to take.
We were at the show and everybody was smoking, so no problem with that, but after the lights went down Renee remembered the brownies and passed them out to us. Apparently it was her first time making them because when we bit into them, we discovered stems and seeds and it hadn't been mixed very well 'cause you got a mouth full of vegetation with a little bit of brownie.
She was such a sweetie that when she asked how they were, we all said great and managed to choke them down.
I knew that some day I would be able to look back on that night and laugh.

My first concert was the Kinks in 1971, my girlfriends and I got to talk them for a minute after the show while we waited for my Father to pick us up. They said hi and asked us for directions to some place and we didn't know how to get there.
Used to see Aerosmith at school dances. They got big real fast. For 2 years we used to pay a buck or two to see them.

I believe, though I could be wrong, my cd is at work, that that was the intended lyric but the guy was crap faced siging it and it stuck? Oh, here was wikipedia said:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/In_A_Gadda_Da_Vida
The song is significant in rock history because, together with Blue Cheer and Steppenwolf, it marks the point when psychedelic music produced heavy metal.[citation needed] A commonly repeated story says that the song's title was originally "In the Garden of Eden" or "In the Garden of Venus" but in the course of rehearsing and recording, singer Doug Ingle was intoxicated and accidentally slurred the words, creating the nonsense phrase that stuck as the title. However, the liner notes on 'the best of' CD compilation state that drummer Ron Bushy was listening to the track through headphones, and couldn't hear correctly; he simply distorted what Doug Ingle answered when Ron asked him for the title of the song (which was originally In-The-Garden-Of-Eden). An alternate version of the story, as stated in the liner notes of the 1995 re-release of the I
n-A-Gadda-Da-Vida album, states that Ingle was drunk when he first told Bushy the title, so Bushy wrote it down. Bushy then showed Ingle what he had written, and the slurred title stuck. And although it is not widley known, this track was produced by Shadow Morton, at the same small studio, in Hempstead, L.I. where he also created the 'Vanilla Fudge Sound'.

Does anyone else think Buckwheat Honey smells like cow patties? It has such an organic smell to it. I made a loaf of banana bread yesterday using 1 cup buckwheat honey and it took me a sec to figure out wjat I though I was smelling lol:toast: The honey is from a NY honey farm, we got a jar as a gift for Xmas:cool2:
We use honey from the hives on my parents' farm. Oh man does it smell good! They have a hivemaster who tends them and harvests the honey in exchange for keeping his hives on their farm (he lives in town). My parents then sell the honey in their farm market. You should always try to buy local honey if you can. Supposedly it contains all the things in the local fields, soit is supposed to help with allergies and autoimmune problems.
Thanks for starting this group, ironbutterfly. Its interesting! :wavy:

From what I've read and heard from local health food people, if you buy honey produced within 50 miles of where you live, it will help with allergies and autoimmune problems.

Hey everybody. Thought I would stop in and say hey. Was reading about the honey posts - - my next-door-neighbor swears by honey for most things that ail you. She uses it topically as well as eating it. Last year I had a bad crack on my thumb from the winter cold and dryness, so she told me to put some local honey on it and cover it with a bandaid. It healed crazy fast!!! Also found this link to find sources for local honey: http://www.honeylocator.com/
Our food co-op also sells local honey. It's sold in bulk so you can just bring in your own container and buy as much as you need. :bee:

I was at this show in Memphis last September (one of the heads bopping up and down up front in the video). Widespread Panic, since adding Jimmy Herring, has been on fire. I'll be seeing them a few times this year for sure. They are playing my local, po-dunk town arena for the 2nd time in two years coming up. Then I'm planning the 4 day weekend at New Orleans Jazz Fest (http://www.nojazzfest.com/) and the new, sure to be great, festival: Rothbury (http://www.rothburyfestival.com/). Looking at the lineup for Rothbury makes me wonder......Bonna-what?!? Such a great line-up at both New Orleans and Michigan.
This song (and the song before it) was a nice surprise in Memphis, as R+B legend Mavis Staples joined them. Enjoy!

FreshAire ZERO VOC paint rocks!!
I had some Home Depot GC so I bought a gallon. They do not color match, because the dyes also have zero VOCS, so I went with he slender reed color for my half bathroom.
The room has no window and I could not believe it when I painted. ZERO ODOR!
The stuff is amazing. It is, however, $36 a gallon.
It's worth it to me even if I have to save a little to buy paint for the next room to not have to smell paint.
Here (http://www.thefreshairechoicepaint.com/) is the website if anyone is interested! :)
Also you can order free color chips and fan deck on the site.

I thought the hippies would get a kick out of this. It's not quite hippie music, though. Today, me and kiddo were at home, hangin' out, making 'hello' videos for our friends in England (we do that back & forth). This video is totally obnoxious and it's ghetto-edited  , but we had a blast making it.
Please ignore the signs you see at the beginning. They are private inside jokes, and are not what they appear! :D
I'm gonna have to open a hard-core rockers group thread! :tongue4:

Cool, I bounce back and forth between Hippies (Cream, CSN & Y, Jefferson Airplane, Beatles, etc.) and Heavy Metal (Ted Nugent (Love his music, Hate his politics) AC/DC, Def Leppard, Mettalica, Scorps, etc.

Check out the loonie stores (dollar store) for fragrant oils, much cheaper than going to a Health Food store.

Punch in DANGERS OF FABRIC SOFTENERS AND DRYER SHEETS. You will never use them again; especially if you have children. Use 6 cups of water, 3 cups of vinegar and 2 cups of hair conditioner. Mix and store. Use the same amount you would normally use.

THANK YOU
I cut the recipe in half and the stuff is the BOMB:drum: Works fantastic. I have washed all forms with it, towels, hubbys work clothes etc and it made it as soft as Downey.
I used V05 conditioner ( 89 cents) After I have used all the V05 I plan on buying a more green conditioner so it's even better for the enviroment. I will never pay for store fabric softener again:offwall:

We use these "Dryer Balls" that tumble with your clothes and we've found they greatly reduce static cling and they make the clothes more fluffy.
The ones we have are blue (I can hear your naughty little minds working right now, STOP IT!) and look like a porcupine.
They're supposed to last 2-3 years, but the lifetime will be greatly reduced if your pupster unit gets ahold of it!

We got them at Shopko but DW sez they're available at Rite Aid too, or online http://as-seen-on-tv-products.ws/store/advanced_search_result.php?keywords=dryer+balit also helps reduce drying time and we use Permanent Press cycle instead of High heat and that helps reduce static too.
We use them with the clothes we are drying after dyeing and it removes the stiff feeling that clothes sometimes have after dyeing.

Well...this bummed me out. http://www.jambase.com/Articles/Story.aspx?StoryID=13274
I had the opportunity to meet Martin on several occasions and used to love the Martin + Friends shows he would throw around the Bay area. A truly gifted musician. Zero was an amazing band, as was Legions of Mary. L of M greatly influenced many of the Jam Bands today. Songs like Phish's Possum are pretty much an almost exact copy of some of L of M adaptations of traditional blues/folk.
If you're looking for some great music today, you should stream or download some of Zero's shows here: http://www.archive.org/search.php?query=collection%3Aetree%20AND%20creator%3A%22Zero%22

This is a hippy/green living question.
I now make all my cleaning supplies but one and I need your help!!!
I have an enamel sink and my dishwasher motor is broken. Instead of fixing it I am saving for a new one, one we have isn't energy star.
Anywho, since I've been using my sink more I realized I need a GREAT homemade cleanser to clean the sink. Mostly I'm getting marks from my utensils. Baking soda paste with dish detergent cleans but does not whiten. I need something that cleans and whitens.
Any help would be appreciated. GRATZI!! :gvibes:

Anyone know how to build an ark? The local news just reported that so far (since last night) we have received 9.5 inches so far in this Southern Illinois downpour. And it's supposed to keep going until tomorrow. Ugh. I'm going on 2 hours sleep. I've been bailing out my basement.
I guess an ark is a little extravagant. How about how to tie the knot to make those cool log rafts they always build in Shipwreck movies?

Over 10 inches now and the news just said it's only half over. My basement now is springing leaks like fable about the dam.....anyone have an extra thumb? Pencil-sized streams of water are literally shooting from the walls. The new sump pump I bought is not keeping up.
I thought my motorcycle was safe in the garage. But the floors are dirt and the water soaked through all the dirt. Not my bike is on it's side. No damage, thank God, but I have to wait for someone to brave the closed and sometimes flooded roads to slip a board under the kickstand while I lift it up.
