View Full Version : Trouble Logging In Today? Try It Now.
Brent
November 19th, 2007, 8:31pm
AOL users (and others who connect to the Internet through a proxy) have had a difficult time trying to log-in to OLS today.
Unless you checked the Remember Me checkbox when you logged-in, you most likely have had problems logging-in and/or staying logged-in.
If you've experienced any of these problems, please try to log-in again now. It should work better for you.
Let me know if you still have any login problems.

Still getting this:
Wrong username or password. You have used up your failed login quota! Please wait 15 minutes before trying again. Don't forget that the password is case sensitive. Forgotten your password? Click here!
I always check that box cause it boots me off as I navigate from page to page if I don't.

I want to add that I have had problems with AOL the last few days and removed all the old versions from my computer and installed a new one. With dial-up it will be weeks before they finish downloading all the updates to my puter. I'm going to wait and see if that is the problem. For instance all "my favorites" seem to be missing but I know that they will reappear as soon as they update that section.
No big deal, I'm in through FF. Love what I'm seeing so far!

What you're talking about missing is your web browser's history.
Normally, underlined, blue-colored links turn purple after you visit the link. As long as the visited web page stays in your web browser's history, normal links to that web page will remain purple.
If various links to sweeps are now blue that were purple, either your web browser's history was cleared or deleted or the links have naturally expired out of your browser's history. It doesn't have anything to do with OLS or the recent upgrade.
Nobody is 'missing' any data, MySweeps or otherwise.

I am totally unable to log in via AOL, although I am able to log in through IE. The problem that causes is a direct result of the fact that I use AOL email to enter contests. When I click on the link to send an email in IE it DOES NOT recognize my AOL account and tells me I can't send it, so I have to go from one program to another and cut and paste everything to enter. Are they working on correcting this problem?

I am still getting the messages that I need to wait 15 minutes. Can't log in using AOL. Somehow after logging in on IE last night I was finally able to get logged in. Got very few sweeps done because of all the problems. IE simply does not work the same way. The Shazam feature was not working. This is so frustrating. Please, please get this wonderful web site working properly again! Since I rely on OLS for my record keeping, I do not have other files set up and so don't have a reasonalbe way to access and enter the sweeps. Without Shazam working properly, it would take twice as long to get anything done. Thanks for the wonderful OLS and please get it working again.

Well, the short answer is AOL sucks. AOL was cool- in the 80s and early 90s (before the Internet).
I have an idea about what the problem may be, but without having AOL myself to test things out, I don't know for sure.
Everybody has different browsers, different operating systems, different versions of those browsers and operating systems, different ISPs, different software running on their computers with different settings and, perhaps most importantly, different understandings of how things work. Trying to accommodate all those differences is a rather herculean task.
I can "tweak" lots of things on OLS during the day without negatively impacting anybody whose currently online. But changing something as important as the login process could potentially cause a lot of people problems. So I'm only going to change something like that in the middle of the night when there are far fewer people around.
Have any of you with the AOL problems tried logging in directly through the forums?
Try this- log out of OLS and then try logging in here:
http://forums.online-sweepstakes.com/usercp.php
If enough of you can log-in directly through the forums, but can't log-in elsewhere, I've got a pretty good idea what the problem is.
I'm probably going to get AOL set up on my computer so that I can test things out myself tonight.

Also, if you're using AOL, you should reload the login page- not a normal reload/refresh, but a "hard" reload that forces your browser to reload the web page and all the files that are a part of it.
Log out of OLS and go to the normal login page:
http://www.online-sweepstakes.com/members/login/
While you're viewing the login page, press and hold down the Ctrl key and then hit the F5 key. If the page doesn't reload, make sure you have the Function Lock on (F Lock) and that the web page you're trying to reload has focus (click on a blank spot somewhere on the web page).
Once the web page is reloaded, try logging in.

Dear Brent,
I sent you an email last night, which you may or may not have had time to read yet. Until just now I was not able to get into OLS to send a thread with my problems, but thanks be to God I think I am in now. I could not go into anything but the most elementary things, and that means I could not go into the priemium sweeps or post threads, etc. I still cannot go in by way of AOL---I am in Internet Explorer. I would get as far as my username and password and it would either tell me that they did not match or would ask me to:"Enter ROBOFORM Master Password that opens Passcard 'Online-Sweepstakes' " which with all my great computer knowlege (ha ha) I had no idea what they wanted. You may have it fixed now--I didn't dare to go out to see until I sent you this message in case I couldn't get in again.------------------------------------------------------- STILL LOVE THE SITE!
YOU DO A GREAT JOB KEEPING IT UP HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO YOU!

Can everybody who is having problems logging in to OLS through AOL post answers to these questions, please?
What version of the AOL software are you using?
What kind of security software are you using? Are you using AOL's built-in or otherwise provided security software? Like this stuff:
http://safety.aol.com/isc/SiteSecurity/
My guess would be that AOL's security software is preventing the login process from happening. There is some Javascript that runs to encrypt your password just before being submitted over the Internet to OLS (the web server). But it's not required, you can still log-in with Javascript disabled. So it's not just simply disabling the execution of the Javascript.
Most of the Javascript, style sheet and image files are now served from ols.loopy.net. It's a different domain name (loopy.net), but that shouldn't matter. No data is exchanged with ols.loopy.net, all it does is serve files. It's a very common practice on the Internet.
If you're using the normal login page:
http://www.online-sweepstakes.com/members/login/
the form data is being submitted to a different sub-domain- forums.online-sweepstakes.com. But it's within the same domain name- online-sweepstakes.com, so again, it shouldn't matter. And if that was the problem, you'd be able to login directly from the forums like I suggested here-
Try this- log out of OLS and then try logging in here:
http://forums.online-sweepstakes.com/usercp.php
The most interesting thing I've seen people say is once they logged in through Internet Explorer (over their AOL connection, just not through the AOL software), they were able to log-in through the same AOL web browser they couldn't log-in through before. Problem solved.
That leads me to believe it might have something to do with a cache. Does AOL's browser share a cache with Internet Explorer? Is the updating of the cache by Internet Explorer the reason it works on AOL after success through Internet Explorer? I'll have to do some digging. But if this were the case, doing a hard reload/refresh (Ctrl + F5 keys) would (should) accomplish the same thing.
Regardless what the problem is, it's quite likely there's a setting or an option in the AOL web browser or the built-in or AOL-provided security software that will fix it.
I haven't done anything fancy or out of the ordinary with OLS or the login process. It follows long-established standards and works perfectly fine for the over-whelming majority of users without the need to adjust any settings or options in their web browser or security-related software. Unfortunately, some AOL software users are having problems. Once I find out exactly what that problem is, I'll do what I can to make it a non-issue. Until then, the best thing anyone can do to help is to learn how to use the AOL software and get yourself familiar with the way it works and the different settings and options that are available.
I still cannot go in by way of AOL---I am in Internet Explorer. I would get as far as my username and password and it would either tell me that they did not match or would ask me to:"Enter ROBOFORM Master Password that opens Passcard 'Online-Sweepstakes' " which with all my great computer knowledge (ha ha) I had no idea what they wanted.
Sounds to me like at least part of your problem might have to do with RoboForm. "Enter ROBOFORM Master Password that opens Passcard 'Online-Sweepstakes' " is a message from RoboForm prompting you to enter your Master password to unlock your protected passcards. Enter your Master password and you should be able to use RoboForm to fill-in your OLS login information.
"I would get as far as my username and password and it would either tell me that they did not match."
Did you get this error message from the OLS web site after trying to log-in? I'm pretty sure I didn't change the names of the form fields, and the URL to the normal login page is still exactly the same. Depending on your RoboForm settings, you might need to make a slight adjustment to log-in using RoboForm directly through the forums (forums.online-sweepstakes.com). The normal login page (http://www.online-sweepstakes.com/members/login/) should work just like it did before.
Happy Thanksgiving to you, DaydreamingLady. Happy Thanksgiving to everyone!

AOL has a cache of it's own. (Edit to add...I don't know if it also shares with IE I just always clear both!)
Click Start

Then find the "America Online" that has no numbers by it
Hold cursor on that and another menu will come up
Click on "AOL System Information"
Click "OK" to the caution
Click "Utilities"
Then clear current cache

I just changed the URL of the normal login page. All OLS links to the login page have been updated. The URL is now:
http://www.online-sweepstakes.com/login/
Because the URL has changed, the login page won't already be cached by anyone's web browser or ISP. Therefore, if the AOL login problems were caused by a cached version of the outdated OLS login page, the problem will be solved.
FYI, almost no OLS web page should ever be cached by any web browser or ISP. OLS sends headers with each web page that tells web browsers and ISPs not to cache the web page. Most comply without any problems. Some don't. And when they don't, problems like this can arise.
Please let me know if any of you continue to have login problems.

Okay, Brent, still having problems.
AOL 9.0 Security version.
What is happening is this: I try to login to AOL and I get the "Wrong user ID" thingey.
Then I go to IE and do the online-sweepstakes.com URL and login there, through IE.
Then I clear my cookies.
Then I go back to AOL and login again (or just go to www.online-sweepstakes.com) and up comes my account, already logged in (thourgh the IE activation).
In other words, I can't login directly through AOL.
I am utilizing an old (bookmarked) link to OLS so I just changed it to your new link and tried to log in again to AOL, but it didn't work.
It seems I have to go through IE--or else--to first log in.
It's not a severe problem because I am able to get onto OLS eventually after looging in through IE, but if you can ponder it a bit when things have slowed down a little, I'd appreciate it.
Thank you for all the work you are doing. BTW, do you prefer Tylenol or Advil?

kimanjo,
Did you clear the AOL browser's cache?
AOL has a cache of it's own. (Edit to add...I don't know if it also shares with IE I just always clear both!)
Click Start
All Programs
Then find the "America Online" that has no numbers by it
Hold cursor on that and another menu will come up
Click on "AOL System Information"
Click "OK" to the caution
Click "Utilities"
Then clear current cache
This is on 9.0

I am working off an older version for Mac and I am having no problems logging on.
It is version 10.3.7 (yeah I know it is ancient but if it's not broke ... blah blah).

Okay, Brent. I cleared the AOL hard cache AND I bookmarked your new OLS login link and went from there. It worked!
Thanks a lot.
