View Full Version : Any one change emails when inundated with SPAM?

Since I started sweeping, I change emails about once a year, keeping an eye on my old one and entering using my new one. This year I'll actually stop monitoring the oldest email, since it hasn't had an entry on it in almost a year.

Anyone else?

No I don't change my email and won't unless I move or change providers. As long as you check your old email addess regularly for winning emails you should be ok and not miss anything. As for getting SPAM I have learned it a one of the few downsides to sweeping and I have learned to accept it.

Nope, I have a dedicated hotmail account for sweeps only, I've had it over two years now and I hardly get spam. A lot of the advertisements we get from entering sweeps, I just unsubscribe when I get tired of them. Also, I'm selective about which sweeps I enter - I don't enter them all and I read the notes to try to catch the odd spammer sweep.

Good luck in the new year!

Nope. I usually only get what I suspect from signups from entering sweepstakes.

Never! I've had the same email addy for years. That to me is like changing your phone number. :frown3: Everyone knows me with one email, I couldn't possibly remember to change everything to a new email.

I'm switching emails right now. I'm using my old email for the ones I've already entered and will keep doing that until that particular sweep expires but all new sweeps I'm using my new email address.

Some sweeps do let you log in and change your profile. I don't like changing emails midstream during a promotion unless you can do it via a profile change.

I usually only opt in if I like the company and it's easy to opt out. I kind of like seeing the trends in fashion etc. anyway, so those emails don't bother me at all.

I get a lot of spam spam, not the opt in kind, the kind where they are selling viagra, canadian presc., mortgage lenders, porn, yada yada and it makes me angry to keep getting that garbage with no way of stopping it, now that blue security folded. The best I can do is use my email software to put the word "bulk" in front of spam. I still go through all of it because I don't want to miss any winning emails.

I have one email addy that I used when I started sweeping. I can't change it though cause it is the main email addy on our account.

That kinda stinks cause I get really bad spam there...the ones that you ca not unsub from and they have the stock quotes and all. I have been adding a rule in everytime I see one and I actually have about 350 rules to delete it from server, but I still get about 10 a day.

So, I added another one in that I could delete if the spam got to bad for me to handle. Of course I would watch it for awhile and make sure no wins came in.

I have a Gmail account that I use only for sweeping.

Me 2, but for some reason in the last 3mths I have been bombarded with SPAM, not advertisment/newsletters from companies that I enter sweeps from, but SPAM for things such as viagra, mortgage and credit card approvals!

I have no idea how "they" got me email addy, as I only use it for sweeps. Funny thing is these emails are sent to other people's gmail addy too, I think they just "make up" email addy to send SPAM to.

I'm getting spam with my first and last name. They even know my city :mad2:

No Way....seems it would be alot more trouble to go in and edit the account of every site that I am registered at. Then have to go back and check the old account for possible wins that could come up to a year later.

It just seems easier to delete the spam and enter more sweeps!!

Yes, me too. I sometimes feel like setting up a temporary email account and test it out on some supposed "sweeps" that I suspect are giving out the info.

Hmm, might not be a bad idea! I have no idea which sweep/sweeps were responsible. Let me know if you figure it out. I'd love to recheck their privacy policy...

I did that from earlier in the year. What a hassle with logins that use email addresses. I changed b/c i was using my service provider and that was not a good idea. So now i just use my gmail account. I think this is the last round of sweeps that use my old email address.

I could not imaging changing every year. Too much work!

I have Yahoo. When deleting spam, does it go to the same place if you click bulk in the bulk folder as it does when you click spam in the Inbox? Sometimes I move all the bulk mail to the inbox and then click spam. Just wondering if that's a waste of time.

When I first started doing sweeps online I set up a yahoo account.I quit using that to enter from about 4 years ago....I still check it daily(just in case)....I will have an average of 200 messages in the in folder and 600 in the bulk per day.(mostly penis enhancer messages, lol)None of my other accounts get bombarded with spam like my yahoo does.I use my service providers email for entering sweeps now and my hotmail for group(forums)lists.

Exactly what I do! I stay way far away from sweeps that seem to exist simply to be sweepstakes -- if they're not sponsored by a recognizable product or service, the chances are very good that all they're doing is getting your e-mail address and personal info. I also stay miles away from any site that says they enter sweeps for you. And I hardly ever get any spam, either.

I might also add that I never download any free things like weatherbug or free smilies or menu bars. My DH got caught by a couple of those more than a year ago and he's still getting 50 or more spam e-mails a day as a result. And to compound the error, he used his e-mail address from his ISP, so he can't change it. He sometimes spends half an hour or more a day deleting spam. :worry:

I was seriously considering this yesterday! I get too much spam in my sweeping email! Unsubscribing hasn't really helped :frown3:

Absolutely!
I have yahoo, which provides disposable email addys. So I just deleted my 2005 address and have been using my 2007 address for all new sweeps. I will hang on to the 2006 address this year.

I can color code them in Yahoo so I know which addy is bringing in the spam.....and 2006 has been pretty clean so far. Only time will tell.

If you click the spam button in Yahoo, it deletes the message and add the address to your block filter. It does not move it to the bulk box unless you get another email from the same sender.

Regarding Post #16....I meant to say click "delete" from the bulk folder. So does it make more since to just delete that awful junk from the bulk folder or to move it to the inbox first and click spam?

The only thing I've done within the last 8 months or so is stop submitting my AOL address to enter sweepstakes on the advice of fellow OLSers. AOLs spam protection is the toughest and I don't want to miss out on a win. I've used my Yahoo address but alas, no winning notifications have shown up there (yet) just spamola. Lots of spamola. :spam: :cry2:

I have Yahoo too. The way I understand it is that "suspected spam" is delivered to your spam in box because it's shown a pattern of being spam, either in the sender's email or the title. Stuff that sneaks by the spam in box for one reason or another is stuff that hasn't yet been reported as spam by Yahoo users. :frown2:

of the spammers who want to do things to and for me. No thank you! As I have said before, I only go to two sites on this computer...the Illinois Lottery and OLS. So, where is all of this spam coming from? Hmmm.......

I love Yahoo's spam button. I just wish they would have something to disable the spammers computers, as they do to other people with their nasty viruses. Sort of a reverse do unto others.

I've got one e-mail addy I used for sweeps and freebies, recently got hit hard with spam... can only block with filters I ad, which still leaves 100 e-mails a day in spam! I've started using a new one, but check in on this one to clear it out and make sure I have nothing special coming in, not expecting wins, but may have a forum connected to it or something. I figure after a while I will not open it up anymore to check.

My new addy already started getting a few spam letters. I don't know how, I am very careful with entering only name brand company sweeps.. freebies I still use the old addy.

Oh, well... You knw what I would love to do to spammers... :mad2:

I have switched before. I kept the address up to date, rarely using it. Now it is relatively spam free, and I will probably go back to using it.

I wonder if some sweep sponsers dq someone if they are using a gmail, yahoo, hotmail or one of those type accounts rather than an ISP email account.

I don't know, I'm just wondering about that. Any thoughts about that?

Early in my sweeping careeer, I had to abandon my yahoo addy. Since then, I have been more careful. I do keep an addy just for "questionable" sweeps or freebies. That helps to keep the spam out of my contest addy.

Yes, me too. I sometimes feel like setting up a temporary email account and test it out on some supposed "sweeps" that I suspect are giving out the info.

I've done that with some I thought were spammers and another OLSer gave me a couple she was SURE were spammers, and turns out I didn't get spam from any of them. With those not only did I use a different email addy, but I misspelled my name differently on each sweep so that there would be no doubt who the culprit was.

That is what I'm doing with my hotmail accounts. I have one that hasn't had entries against it for a year, once that is not being used by has been used last year (hope springs eternal that I'll get sweeps notifications there) and a new one for 2007. Those sites that have permanent logins that I enter will get updated slowly as I go. Spam was just too much for me--YUCK

I have changed emails due to spam in th past. Both with my ISP and my "free" accounts. I have a gmail account I use only for sweeps. Untl recently I wasn't getting barley any spam, but I entered a contest and all of the sudden I am getting hundreds in my spam folder. I doubt I will change this time. But it the spam gets unbearable or more keeps getting in my inbox I might.
