Excerpt at end of Molly Ivin Column:

"Sen. Ted Stevens suggested last week that New York City's cops and firefighters should work overtime without pay as a wartime sacrifice. "I really feel strongly that we ought to find some way to convince the people that there ought to be some volunteerism at home. Those people overseas in the desert — they're not getting overtime. ... I don't know why the people working for the cities and counties ought to be paid overtime when they're responding to matters of national security."

Stevens, R-Alaska, had just voted for tax cuts that will give those who make a million dollars a year $92,000 more to spend on polo ponies."

Boy, he's a mean one.

What has he done for the country? Aside from voting for big tax cuts for millionaires and supporint drilling in ANWAR?

It does seem strange that someone who represents an area of the country with the least per capita population would make recommendations for the city with, I think, the highest per capita population.

If only the halibut could vote...

Does he think that we're stupid or something? Like we're not going to notice the discrepancy? What an arrogant schmuck - but half the country will fall for it...

That is so unjust! And injustice upsets me most of all! You know what I think?! I think that the military SHOULD be paid MUCH better than they are. They make a meager living. And our city workers like firemen and cops deserve to make MUCH more than they do now. Maybe those senators should stop wiping their butts with our tax dollars!

The rich get richer. I was just having this conversation with a coworker the other day.

People in my office are drastically underpaid. They raised the cost of our benefits, so I actually made less this year than last year. They just laid off a ton of people last year, and this year, while we were fortunate enough to get raises, they were about enough so I can buy an extra sandwich every week.

In the meantime, the two people who head the company gave themselves 10+ million dollar raises.

That is ridiculous! I am so sorry to hear that. I will never understand such extreme greed and lack of concern for other's well being and lives. So not fair!

It didn't used to be this way, you know. The gap between the workers and the bosses was more rational. It's only been in the last 20 years or so that the gap has gone "off the charts."

It's greed, pure and simple. It's probably the start of the downfall of the American empire. All empires decay, decline and eventually fall. (Roman, British, etc.) The American empire will, too. Just look at history.

I wonder why Sen. Stevens didn't suggest a pay cut on Congress paychecks. Since he doesn't hesitate to suggest that our nation's bravest should take a pay cut, I think we should all suggest he take one first.
