Okay folks, it's time! We've had a pretty good turnout on the signups and now we need to post our thoughts on what we might like from our swap buddy!

Remember that the purpose of this swap is to think outside whichever holidays we celebrate and send something of significance to your assignee's holiday celebration. (And yes, while a Dorito's Hi-Def Plasma TV would certainly be significant to my Christmas, I'm not expecting it in the swap! )

So, tell us what you want, what you really, really want! :p A milk and cookies set for Santa? Maybe some inspirational Christmas cds? A dreidel game and gelt for the kiddos? Books or science-related items for the Solstice? Decor for your Kwanzaa table? Let us know so your swap buddy can begin looking into your holiday and its appropriate gifts!

Lastly, remember this is all about fun, celebration and learning! I'll be providing some informational links in your swap assignment for easy reference! Enjoy! :gvibes:

Thank you bwsmom, this is an awesome idea for a swap and will be alot of fun to participate in.

Our family celebrates a non-religeous Christmas, we love decorations, all sorts..

My wish list would have to include the DVDs "Its a wonderful Life", "The Santa Clause" (1 or 2) or Christmas candles.

My girls love Nutcrackers and Snowglobes and DH, well, he can't wait until the holidays are over.. (ya always gotta have one in the bunch..) But he does like Speed Racer or Vampires (not very holiday-ish, but thats him).

Wow, its not that far off, is it? I'm ready, now if we can just get some snow :jump:

Hello Everyone!
I'll start by saying that I'm a "holiday swap box virgin" so please be gentle with me if I am awkward or misunderstand something. I've been watching y'all play these swap games long enough to understand and I think I'll really be missing out if I don't sign up.
******************************************************************

To My Swap Buddy:

I absolutely love Christmas and celebrate both the spiritual and secular components. I am also very open minded and would not be offended at all if you want to share something from your faith or culture, even if it is different than mine.

I could make a list of things a mile long that would please me, but I'll start by saying that I am not picky and will most likely appreciate whatever you are willing to share. I am overly sentimental and just adore things that are homemade, so if you are crafty, or bake, or take photos, or make mix Cd's, or write, or make jewelry or...whatever, I'll be touched to have the gift of your time. I also do not have children, so if you have kids who like to draw or make decorations, I would love that!

Some things that make me happy are...

1. Lucy from the Peanuts comic strips, especially in her little Psychiatric Help 5 cents booth.
2. Pug Dogs
3. Niagara Falls
4. Country Music
5. Romantic Comedies
6. Books (all kinds)
7. Dark Chocolate
8. Snowflakes
9. Purple Elephants
10. Rubber Ducks
11. Postcards from your neck of the woods
12. Chai Tea Latte
13. Bucky & Satchel from"Get Fuzzy"
14. A Holiday Card signed by lots of people I don't know as a symbol of loving strangers as one of the important messages of the season...

Thank you advance for everything you do to pass the joy and peace my way this holiday season.

*************************************************************************

PEACE, LOVE & JOY TO YOU AND YOURS THIS HOLIDAY SEASON!!!

Kwanzaa is a non-religious African American holiday which celebrates family, community, and culture. It is celebrated for seven days: December 26 - January 1.

Dr. Maulana Karenga, professor and chairman of Black Studies at California State University, Long Beach, created Kwanzaa in 1966. After the Watts riots in Los Angeles, Dr. Karenga searched for ways to bring African-Americans together as a community. He founded US, a cultural organization, and started to research African "first fruit" (harvest) celebrations. Karenga combined aspects of several different harvest celebrations, such as those of the Ashanti and those of the Zulu, to form the basis of Kwanzaa.

The name Kwanzaa is derived from the phrase "matunda ya kwanza" which means "first fruits" in Swahili. Each family celebrates Kwanzaa in its own way, but celebrations often include songs and dances, African drums, storytelling, poetry reading, and a large traditional meal. On each of the seven nights, the family gathers and a child lights one of the candles on the Kinara (candleholder), then one of the seven principles is discussed. The principles, called the Nguzo Saba (seven principles in Swahili) are values of African culture which contribute to building and reinforcing community among African-Americans. Kwanzaa also has seven basic symbols which represent values and concepts reflective of African culture. An African feast, called a Karamu, is held on December 31.

The candle-lighting ceremony each evening provides the opportunity to gather and discuss the meaning of Kwanzaa. The first night, the black candle in the center is lit (and the principle of umoja/unity is discussed). One candle is lit each evening and the appropriate principle is discussed.

For our Kwanzaa Celebration Anything related to the seven symbols would be cherished

As this is also a learning experience - here is a link from the History Channel for a few more details

We celebrate Christmas (non-religious) but I wouldn't mind something religious being sent to me.

I am a mother to three grown men (stepson 31, son 25 and son 22). I have seven grandchildren and they all live within a couple of blocks. They are boy 8, boy 6, boy 4, boy 4, girl 2, girl 18 months and girl 7 months. Yes we have our hands full.

I work full-time and despite all of the kids and grandkids I am a very young 42.

I love candles - anything clean or fruit scented.
I also love any kind of tree decorations. We have a mix match of them and I love them all.
I enter alot of snail contests so pretty envelopes would be nice.
I listen to Country music.
I use a ton of body lotion and really like all types of scents.
Anything to keep the kids occupied is a Godsend in this house LOL.

I hope this helps my buddy!

Happy Holidays to EVERYONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We celebrate non-religous Christmas. Every year, we go spend the night at Grandma & Grandpa's house( so do my brothers' family) and do Christmas day together. There are 6 of us-me, dh, 12yo ds, 5yo ds, 3yo ds & 2 yo ds. We love decorating for Christmas. So decorations are great. I love adding to our Ornament collection, and always buy a new animated person to our collection every year. I've started collecting snowglobes also. We have most of the holiday movies( or I should say the main ones on every year), and we own a ton of holiday cds. Foody items are wonderful too. I love cooking, and we do lots of baking during this season. We actually like everything, almost. lol So whatever you send, I'm sure we will love! :D
ps... One thing that I would like to have, is a nice countdown calendar that I can hang up each year. Maybe a cloth one?

pss.......I collect shotglasses, so a special one from your area would be awesome!

We celebrate non-religious Christmas and Winter Solstice (description below)
Winter Solstice
Focus of Celebration:
Strengthen family bonding with each other
Expand upon existing patterns of family celebrations
Attune family to Nature's cycles
Attune family to its membership in the community of all life on planet Earth
Connect with ancestors
Celebrate ethnic/cultural heritage(s)
Educate about ancient and contemporary folkways
Extend the celebration of Christmas, be an alternative, or expand upon it
Deepen understanding about spiritual renewal and love
Have fun

(my take on Winter Solstice)
Winter Solstice is known by many names Yule, MidWinter etc. It falls on the longest night of the year. It is a time for sharing with family and friends (infact in earliest times, you had no choice, as during winter most family or clans were snowbound together during this time) and a time for looking both back and forward. Back to give thanks for the blessings of the year and forward to the year to come. Winter has lost its battle and even though it is a long way off, the gradually lengthing days give evidence of Springs arrival. It is a celebration of both survival and hope. We celebrate our Solstice by having a bonfire burn from dusk to midnight. Friends and family, from all over who are able, attend. Everyone is welcome. Many who attend our burns reqularly started out as a "can I bring so-and-so" and returned again and again to become family.

Solstice gifts have to do with nature and harmony. Soothing scents, sounds and textures.
Examples:
Candles
Inscence (Lavendar is calming)
Windchimes
Items from or made from such as shells, quartz, stone animals.
Mistletoe symbolizing: Peace, Prosperity, Healing, Wellness, Fertility, Rest, Protection
Holly symbolizing: Old Solar Year; Waning Sun; Protection; Good Luck

Non Religous Christmas items are pretty self explainatory. LOL
I love potpourri... (and goes well with the above list as well)
I collect windchimes (hmmm)
I collect candles. (oh okay never mind... I see I am just repeating myself LOL)

I truly dont' care what my swap buddy decides to gift, I just love the thought of sharing the meaning of different holidays with others. I think this is a wonderful idea. I wish more people understood that Winter Solstice, a "GASP" pagan holiday, is in reality just a wonderful way to rejoice in family, friendship and nature.

Ok so Im sure I gave you enough ideas..feel like I am blabbing now. We would love any gifts. We are not picky at all. Like I said above my daughter would love the gifts the most. We all have about everything we need..definately do not need Dvd's..since I won a year on netflix I do not buy dvd's anymore.

We celebrate Winter Solstice and Christmas. I live in Alaska where solstice is a huge deal! We get very little light during the winter and winter solstice is the shortest day of the year. Winter Solstice gets Alaskans thinking about the Iditarod Sled Race and many people leave for Hawaii to combat SAD (seasonal affective disorder). If nothing else, Winter Solstice is a hopeful holiday as the days will finally get longer and we'll see the sun more often!

A little about me:
I'm getting married on Jan 6th in Kentucky (I'm a huge UK Wildcat fan!!!) I attend grad school in Alaska for creative writing and I work as a TA. I love to read. I love dark chocolate. There's something about the darkness that makes your body crave carbs and sweets. Also, light--I go tanning in the winter just to keep my sanity (bright light therapy). Natural light lightbulbs are a good gift!! We sleep a lot more in the winter and rent more movies too (Blockbuster). We also burn a lot more candles around Solstice---it's almost a religious experience--to celebrate the return of light.....

We celebrate christmas and just about anything is a go. We don't do candles because of the little ones but love the scented pinecones. Don't drink coffee, do drink hot chocolate and tea. Daughter loves Tinker Bell and princesses. Son loves Thomas Train, Toy Story characters, Cars the movie character, Bob Builder. Anything from bathroom hand towels, kitchen towels, knick knacks and decorations are wonderful. Don't need any lotions or potions. Shirts size XL, socks or slippers for size 9. As expected, we had a lot more people who celebrate Christmas sign up than those who celebrate any other holiday, so many of you will get assigned to people who celebrate the same as you, but we did our best to mix and match everyone, incorporating a couple of special requests from some of the participants.

If you haven't yet posted here on the Wishlist, please DO!! It will save your swap buddy from having to stalk you and give them more time to spoil you with their shopping! :D

Enjoy, and thanks again for participating!!! :gvibes:

Edit: Shoot. i forgot to say that i celebrate a non-religious christmas...and christmas is the day of my BIRTHDAY! :birthday:

I'm confused - i just tried to post this and it said it did, so maybe i posted in the wrong thread?

anyways...

Okay, okay… :cheer6: here it is:

I’m 24 and have a fabulous b/f named john and a precious four month old pug named ted.
*I LOVE dark chocolate-godiva makes these amazing dark chocolate pieces with a delicious raspberry filling…oh my.
*I’d love to learn to cook – I’m honestly at the waaaaay beginning level, so a cookbook written for either a very small child or a monkey would be perfect for me. I just learned how to boil an egg last week and I had to call my grandmother twice to make sure I was doing it correctly. Something like, “Your First Cookbook” with brightly colored pictures would be great. I’m not stupid, i just don’t “get” cooking. My b/f gets excited when I make hamburger helper… :yum:
*I love the comics “Get Fuzzy” and “Pearls before Swine”, so either one of the books, or the daily calendars would be awesome!
*my favorite color this season is navy blue –
*I’m addicted to Gossip Magazines…shameful, I know!
*I could spend 6 hours shopping at Target and I could always use Itunes.
*john loves sailing and croquet and ted loves Bullysticks – disgusting little things, but boy does he love them!

*I’m not into jewelry or overly girly things and I don’t drink caffeine or alcohol

This is all I can think of for now…I spoil myself quite a bit, so my wish list is never too long. That said, I LOVE surprises and will be grateful for ANYTHING my super buddy wants to include!

An idea for those whose buddy didn't post a wishlist (or even those who did)

Go look at the BIG Holiday Swap hosted by KB and Karen (http://www.online-sweepstakes.com/forums/showthread.php?t=471181). You HAD to post a wishlist to be in that one. If your buddy is in that swap as well you can take from there.

My buddy posted a better wishlist on the big swap then here when they did post, so I am using both wishlists to go off of.

easy way to find your swap buddy on that thread... use ctrl+f and search for thier name on each page.

I'm such a noodle brain!! Swap Buddy, I'm sorry I haven't posted until now!! The swaps I have signed up for have obviously become a tangled web! I thought I had posted, but realized it was for another christmas swap! Please forgive me, and if you have already done your shopping, I'm sure I will love whatever you have picked out! I'm not picky and am easy to please. I think half the fun of getting a gift is the surprise element of it. Anywho, I love to cook, love birds (such as houses, feeders, birdfeed, etc). I also love to decorate to the hilt for Christmas and love Christmas doo dads. I love reading (Favorite authors are Larence Block, Stephen King, Dean Koontz...really any thrillers, crime, horror). Would love to have something from the state you are from. I also love eating (so any food goodies is always fun). I just started doing snail mails, so anything pertaining to that would be great. I love DVD's (especially horror and thrillers) and I collect unique coke items. Not the knew stuff, just things that are unusual or different. Believe me, I don't have a thing in my collection over $20, so I'm a cheap collector as well! I will add to this if I think of any other things, but again, anything you pick will be enjoyed and loved!

A star globe ornament ( you shake it and it has snow in it)

A snowman and trees nick nack (I was just looking at this with my youngest son and I realized that they are salt and pepper shakers...Where is my head?)
A box of cordial cherries (They are good by the way!)
A box of Marshmellow Lovers hot chocolate

On my end of things I am going to wait about a week to ship out the box to my swap buddy. It will be out by Dec. 1st though and I am going to ship it Priority mail, I just thought of a few more things I want to get for her.

Here i am! :wavy:

I got the most WONDERFUL surprise yesterday from sweet, sweet straycat!

Everything was beautifully wrapped in a different type of wrapping paper for each goodie!

Here's the picture, which may or may not exclude a few items unintentionally b/c i didn't get to take the picture until today and my b/f and i exuberantly dug through the goodies last night...:highfive:

http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i156/rosaliejcho/xmas.jpg

in no particular order:

4 gorgeous and delicious smelling holiday candles
Ear wax candles
tea lights
2 different types of lotion
*basil and lemon
*sangria splash - holy cow does this smell awesome!!
2 cookbooks - both have pretty pictures and one does specifically say "simple" on it!!
a box of supper bakes, which my b/f was drooling over..
a super fun notepad in the shape of a dress with a hanger - so cute!
2 beautiful holiday pins - perfect for dressing up my winter coats
an ornament and a razor set for b/f - so sweet of you to think of him - the razor set immediately disappeared...i think he liked it!
sticky notes - i'm strangely obsessed with sticky notes - i don't know if you knew that or not, but i will buy anything in the form of a sticky notepad...
A passport wallet with good luck wishes for an awesome trip win in 2007 :jet:
2 precious heart shaped frames that will look perfect on my desk at work
a fun address book - which i actually need b/c i keep writing addresses down on scraps of paper and then losing them...
xmas salt and pepper shakers
a bag of chocolate bells filled with fudge, caramel or peanut butter...which are not in the picture b/c they are on my desk, being eaten as we speak
a bag of autumn candy corn
a whole bunch of the fear factor candy - which i really, really wanted!!!
and...what i believe to be red, sequined nipple covers...

also included was a sweet birthday card with $20 sweet smackeroos!! thank you so much for that!! sooooo nice of you!

AND...b/c she is awesome, she also included a bunch of fun halloween goodies b/c my original buddy fell through on the halloween swap.

Just a reminder to those who haven't sent their packages to their buddies yet.... the deadline draws near!

I do know of a couple of people who are running behind due to unforeseen circumstances, and their buddies are aware of that fact.

WHEN YOU GET YOUR PACKAGE, be sure to post in the "Whaddya Get?" thread so we can all share in the goodness of our fellow OLSers! (Plus, it's always nice to post a public "thank you!" :yesyes: )

If there's a problem with getting your package out on time, feel free to pm me and let me know so I can then let your buddy know, k?

I'll be posting this reminder in the original swap signup thread as well, in case someone misses it here.

Thank you again and again for participating!!! :gift: :cheer7: :gvibes:
