Any suggestions? I have tried everything I can think of. It starts and then gets hung up and just sits there. I tried running it in safe mode last night..that didn't work either.
I'm in an upstairs bedroom and there is a small casement window by my desk. I think my computer will fit through it.....

I also have Windows xp and mine wont run disk cleanup either. Have you gone to the windows update site and downloaded all the critical updates? Try doing that. I dont have any other ideas after that.

Window is tempting, isn't it?! My window comes complete with a HOSE next to it - - - even more tempting (and, yes, I've threatened a few times - - ok, more than a few).
Sorry, I can't offer any positive advice - good luck!

I just ran disk cleanup on Win 2000. IT works, but takes a long time before it comes back. It appears hung. Were you patient? Did you give it a couple hours (if you have a slow computer), or at least 30 minutes if you have a fast one?

...my husband just ran our disk cleanup on Win XP yesterday for the first time. It ran for about 1 hr. and then locked up! This computer is new and I never had those kind of problems with Win 98 . Best of luck to you.

Kathy,
In case you have not found the solution to your problem, this worked for me. It is a fairly common problem with XP, but not fatal.
You need to got to this site and download a little zipped file which contains a reg fix. Once you have unzipped the file double click on it and answer yes when asked if you want to add the information to the registry.

I get really icy feet when fooling around with the reg. But this helped.

What you should do first is a scan disk for your hard drive. If your computer doesn't scan disk on it's own you may want to run it to check for errors.
To start scan disk: right click the C drive in my computer on your desktop or start up menu. Then click properties, tools tab, and then the top "Error check now" button. It will say it can't do it and do you wish to do this next time you Reboot. Click yes then reboot. Scan disk should start.
Also sometimes antivirus programs can cause your disc cleanup to freeze up...make sure all programs are closed and not running before running scan disc.
If your scan comes up clear of errors, try to defrag your hard drive.
Hope this helps!

sky,
I was in a brave mood last night (three glasses of :toast: wine helped lol) and installed the patch. I set a restore point :worry2: before installing...just in case and....
Works like a dream :yay:...no pauses. It took about 2 seconds to run!!
Thanks! kt :cheer4:

I had a similar problem about a month ago. The Microsoft support site has a couple fixes. Go to www.microsoft.com, then click on Support at the top right. Select the Knowledge Base and click "Search the Knowledge Base". In the the "select a Microsoft product" pull down menu, select "Windows XP". In the "search for ..." box, put in "disk cleanup". You'll get a couple things to try depending on your situation. My problem was disk cleanup stopped responding while scanning files. I followed the step by step instructions in the knowledge base article and then disk cleanup worked fine.
Good luck. Sounds like Microsoft should have sent out a patch or windows update for this by now!
