Overview from the United Devices website:

YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE

By combining thousands of ordinary PCs to work on extremely large computational projects, problems can be solved more quickly and less expensively than by conventional methods. Now regular people can help fuel research and projects that previously may have required a bank of supercomputers or a hundred years to complete. The Volunteer Your PC program lets you make a real difference without donating money or your time with the tool that you are using to view this site right now—your home PC.

In our Volunteer Your PC program, your computer can join tens of thousands of other PCs across the Internet each working on a small part of a large problem simultaneously. You can help one or more public good projects. To participate, simply download a very small, non-invasive software program that works like a screensaver: it runs when your computer isn't being used, and processes projects—until you need the power. Your computer never leaves your desk, and the project never interrupts your usual PC use.

IT BENEFITS THE WORLD: IT BENEFITS YOU

Make A Difference
United Devices empowers individuals to do something more then just make a financial donation to a research foundation or charity. It allows you to truly participate and make a difference.

Use Cool Free Technology
United Devices Members are not only fueling the next revolution in computing, they are involved in some of the most significant and cutting edge projects in the world.

ITS EASY AND ITS SAFE

The download process is very easy. We provide prompts to guide you through completion. And once you download the UD Agent and have it running, you never have to think about it again—the software runs quietly in the background and updates itself. There is no cost to participate and no impact on your computer use. The United Devices software works only on our projects—it cannot detect or transfer anything on your machine. It can only process the project-related information.

I'm sorry, but what is this a team for? Can you give me a quick rundown, someone? (yes, yes, I know about the search function, but I'm lazy. I've been meaning to do something about it, right after I take a nap...)

Thanks! Looks like an interesting concept. I'm going to explore their website a bit, then I'll probably register and download it.

And thanks for finding it for me - I'm having trouble getting motivated to do ANYTHING today - go to the store, work on my Ebola project, write my papers, wash the cats....All I want to do is sit on my butt and drink coffee. I promise I'll find the infor myself next time *sheepish grin*

I just checked the standings this morning, and our team still has only 122 members. But we have over 20,000 OLS members.

Why don't we treat this project like we did the OLS Money Tree? Think of the good we could do for Cancer Research!!!

This program has been running in the background on my computer for over a year now, with not one problem or slowdown. I don't even know it is there unless I go look.

It's free, it's painless, and it's for a good cause.

Come on everyone, sign up!!! Please?

You can totally ignore it, it will just do it's thing.

What an awesome project!!!!! Sometimes we wonder how we can make a difference in the world and this doesn't even even require a lot of personal effort from anyone except a download. Imagine that when drugs are found to effect a cure, the sense of accomplishment and pride you would always carry with you to know you may have had even a very small role in such a wondrous feat. I am fortunate enough to have a cable modem and can be online for this 24/7 and I will leave my computer on 24/7.

Dear Brent or anybody,

Whenever I've had my computer on for a long time and have had a lot of windows open, the computer starts running slower and slower and I have to turn it off and start afresh. Currently Chemistry at Oxford University is creating a protein module on my computer and they say they are 4% done. Is it going to hurt their project if I turn off my computer momentarily?

I'm thinking that most people don't have their computers on 24/7, but can you tell me how this works?

It's interesting to watch the protein module coming together and feel that in a very small way I am contributing to cancer research. I wish I had discovered this months ago.

I don't have a computer at home, but I installed it on my work one and so far there has been absoltutely no noticable difference. In fact many other people use my terminal and none of them have even notice it is running!
Maybe you can get him to install it on just one computer and ask him to give it a week or a month and if it works well then add it to the others. It is possible to remove the program if he decides he doesn'r want it.

Hello, I am a newer user of OLS! I was browsing the message boards and came across the UD program. I down loaded it on 10/31 and have not had a problem with it being on my computer. I joined this effort in September when I joined OLS. I believe in the goodness of it. I just wonder if it is what makes my computer run a little noisier (sounds like a vacuum cleaner running in another part of the house).

It would not stop me from doing it....it just makes me wonder.

Styflan
November 20th, 2004, 7:46pm
I haven't seen the Rosetta project either, but then again I don't have the screen saver running (you can disable the screensaver without disabling UD BTW) so I don't know what projects are cooking unless I click on the UD icon in my toolbar. I might have to reload my software though because some of the ud files were deleted when I was running various cleaning utilities on my pc & my stats may have stopped going up. Have to keep an eye on it.

FYI, Brent has posted new 3 month membership winners for the OLS UD team today. You guys might want to take a peek & see if your name is there. Hey, I just joined the show. What can I say? I read the stuff on the websites and looked closely at the effort here and anybody who has a computer online should be involved with this thing. I think it's a great idea....and I already feel good about joining up on this project.
I still don't trust anybody. That goes with my nature. You had to live my life to understand.
But if my puter does some good when I'm not using it, all the better. Money well spent. I haven't really won anything major with my time spent signing up on contests. Most of what I've won, I've given away....three things...and this way, I guess I get to do some good. It kinda boggles the mind...here's my computer connected to hundreds of other computers doing problems that could one day provide knowledge about proteins in the human body.
AIDS and other diseases could be cured as a result of this process. AIDS....man if this problem is ever solved...what a great accomplishment...and cancers...and other diseases.
Yeah, this rocks. Here's my little puter high in the Black Hills of South Dakota doing serious stuff. This rocks.

Anyone notice the drastic stats change for the members? I was like number 21 or 22 yesterday and now today I'm 36! Whew what happened? Anyone notice that or am I the only one that pays attention to the stats? :grin4: Maybe there is a new study that pays big points!

Kakes, here is the info you need for your login problem. This comes from the Q and A help section of grid.org. Hope this helps with your problem. I am also adding the link for this if there are any other questions. They are very helpful.

http://www.grid.org/help/

I have just installed the UD Agent, and the registration screen has my Windows log in name as my member name. Can I choose my member name?
Yes. Although the UD Agent automatically fills in the Member Name text box with your Windows log in, this is only a suggestion. You can modify the text box with a name more to your liking.

I have just installed the UD Agent, but when I try to register, it gives me an error saying that my password does not match the one on the server. How can I fix this?
There are three reasons that this can happen:

1) You are trying to login as an existing member but your password or username are mistyped. There is a password recovery process available from this location. If you set up a challenge phrase previously, this system will recover your password for you. Otherwise, you will need to re-install the UD Agent and create a new account.

2) The current load on the United Devices servers inhibited the request, and it was not processed. If you are confident that you entered the correct password, simply retry in a minute or so.

3) If you have never created a United Devices password before, this may be due to insufficient or erroneous proxy configuration data: if you are behind a firewall, please ensure that ports 80 and 443 are open for outbound traffic. Additionally, ensure that port 443 is not restricted to SSL only traffic. Though the UD Agent uses port 443, it does not use SSL. Instead, it uses a proprietary connection protocol. If you are using a proxy, first check to ensure that the information that you entered for the proxy is correct. Note that the proxy name must be the full address of the proxy server: proxyname.yourorg.com. If using an "https" proxy, you do not need to type "http" in the "Proxy Server" section. Under some conditions corrected proxy authentication information still may lead to this error. Should this be the case you will need to restart the UD Agent.

Hope someone can help me. I've joined United Devices team but only get credit for .98 gigs of memory when I have 35 gigs free on my computer. It shows me at 20 percent of ideal system which is 5 gigs. On all the other comparisons I am above the norm with 2.7 mhz and 512 megs RAM...and other areas...above the norm. However, only .98 gigs memory available.
How do I make more memory available to the UD team? Is this a change I must make in the system .ini cache or what? I just want my computer to be as useful as possible for the projects.

rikwrybac, you will have to log into the UD website. Once you have accessed your profile, go to My Device Manager, and there you will be able to choose how much space to allocate. from 100MB to 10GB. I have 10GB allocated without any problems to my system or programs or games I run.

I just realized that I don't have this no more.
I signed up a long time ago and never had a problem with it.
I was reading the posts when it occurred to me I don't have this no more because I just recently had my computer reformatted.
So I'm downloading it again.

So am I going to have a problem trying to do it since I already am regisgtered with it?

I am having a problem.
After I downloaded it it asked if I wanted to register or if I was already a member to just log in.

So I tryed logging in but I guess I don't remember my password. It says the user name or password is incorrect.
I thought I knew what it was but apparently not.

Ok I had to register all over again and thankfully it took it.

Anyone notice the drastic stats change for the members? I was like number 21 or 22 yesterday and now today I'm 36! Whew what happened? Anyone notice that or am I the only one that pays attention to the stats? :grin4: Maybe there is a new study that pays big points!

I went back to the Rosetta project, I've noticed.

http://statsman.ww-testsites.co.uk/udstats/html/1800.html

Vicky, I've been watching... since I got 2nd computer I've moved up in ranking by points (sorry, I am one of those that bumped you down...)! I also found the Rosetta project (not called by that name on the screen where you can choose projects... but I (gasp) read their forums and figured it out!). I said I'd take the Rosetta project but haven't gotten one yet? Let's keep bumping this up and see if we can get more folks on board! Current is right - sad that so few of our great OLS group have joined!

Yeah but did anyone happen to see the stats yesterday? They were completely changed. Alot of the members had a million points. Then today, it's back to the regular stats. I thought maybe some people got hooked up to some computer network or something.:D

So are you beating me in the stats Suzanne! :) Yeah you took off and got way ahead. I was just hoping to get into the top section.

I had to quit for awhile when my computer was messed up and it took awhile getting back to it. But I caught up alittle. :D

Vicky or Brent, I just realized that I am signed up under 2 different names but only 1 is an OLS screen name.
When I first joined this I must of signed up as sarahjd766 even though my OLS name is luckysarah. So when I was just looking at the usage list that you posted I see my name(sarahjd766) but not luckysarah.
Today when I resigned up I registered with my OLS screen name and was wondering why it let me when I was already registered.

I guess it don't matter except that Brent has the 3 month membership contest when you sign up so I'm not sure if he ever drew that name what would happen because its not an OLS user name.
I hope you understand what I'm saying cause I'm confusing myself now.

I tried to install this today because it sounds quite worthwhile but I ran into several problems.
Before installation my comp was running a CPU usage of about 4%. After installation it jumped to CPU usage of 80% - 100% and slowed to a crawl. Alos, although I was able to create a user profile I could not click on the link and join OLS team - kept getting site error message. I also could not adjust the amount of storage space (their meter had me a .98 - I upped it to 3 GB but this didn't change anything. I uninstalled the program to see what would happen and my CPU usage immediately dropped down to 1%- 4% range with occasional spikes. I am not very computer saavy so I don't know why this is happening. Can anyone offer any advice becasue I'd really like to be able to help withthis project? Thanks!

I don't now how or why but I think everything's fixed. I uninstalled the program and then I clicked on join OLS team link and it let me register. Then I reinstalled the program and, even though CPU usage is in the 70% range or higher, comp is running back to normal speed.

So, bottom line, I'm registered on the OLS team and program is up and running.

I actually tried my OLS sn/pw but that didn't work. Any ideas? (Am I supposed to join grid.org and download the software and then try to join the OLS team?)

Also, will it work with 56K dial-up?

Thanks for helping me. I'd so love to do this!

Here are instructions for anyone else who needs 'em:

1. Go to the OLS Team Page at http://www.grid.org/services/teams/team.htm?id=96B5A849-38C5-4830-9B8E-3132B0D67079
2. On the left-hand side, click on Join Grid.org Now and download and install the software.
3. Register using the screen that pops up after you install (I used my OLS name as my member name).
4. Then go back to the OLS Team Page and click on Join This Team.

That's it!

You must have Windows 98 or later, but it doesn't matter what type of internet connection you have. As long as your computer stays on, the UD program runs tasks in the background. Then whenever a task is finished (about once every 24-hours in my case), another task gets downloaded the next time you go online. I hardly notice it.

If you REALLY want to rack up points, you may install the software on as many PC's as you want and sign them all in with the same member name/password. :)

Thanks to amann1 for PMing me with help!

Okay, I have the second computer set up, and we're cooking. But the first computer is in dire straits. Didn't someone say they were having problems running this under Windows XP Pro? That's what I have on the other computer, and it's having major problems! Time to uninstall and reinstall, and see if that helps. Wish me luck!

5/29 Turned out it was the privacy suite in McAffrey that was giving me fits. It was a pain anyway, so I unistalled it. I was already showing 186 points as of yesterday afternoon! This makes me so happy, since I lost a sister to leukemia a few years ago, and one of my brothers is battling against cancer of the bile duct.

psalmstress, you can go into preferences (the box with the checkmark) and set a snooze time for a couple-few-dozen hours, then put it into snooze by hitting the little moon icon. It stops blinking at you until the snooze ends, and it'll try to connect to the server when each snooze session ends. :)

I've noticed that stats updates have been running 80-100 hours behind ever since the UD server was down about a week ago.

EDIT: I just checked the Grid.org forums page; statss update for all teams (not just ours) are running behind while they're transitioning their servers, but members are still able to download and submit tasks.

You should have a blue oval in your windows toolbar. Place your cursor over it (without clicking) and a little box should appear that says "UD Agent - Primary task is executing." You can double-click the oval if you want to look at program settings, task progress, etc. Otherwise you don't have to do anything else ~ except be a proud member of the team!

If it's my problem I don't know what to do.You're not the only one getting that error. The stats on that site and on the grid.org site (http://www.grid.org/services/teams/team.htm?id=96B5A849-38C5-4830-9B8E-3132B0D67079) have not been updated since the grid.org service was disrupted on 7/19.

Your personal stats should be updated and can be checked here (https://www.grid.org/services/home.htm), but there's been no announcement regarding the updating of team stats. It's not only our team that's affected, it's everyone.

The grid.org website has been slow to update recently, but eventually they will update the statistics and the appropriate values will show up. They had a problem with their server about 10 days ago and the stats have not returned to their normal updating schedule.

Even though your work isn't currently showing up, give it time and all the work your computer has done will be shown on the stats website. Their problem started more than 6 days ago, so the experience you've had does not reflect the normal operation of the program. I urge you to give it another chance.

I had trouble with this a little over a week ago. I wouldn't let me log in to see my stats and then a few days later the program on my computer said that it couldn't communicate with the server. I let it try for a few days and then it asked me to enter my user information.

Their system seems to have forgotten all about me because it wouldn't let me use my current username with password. So I signed up for a new account using the same username and password and it worked.

While my stats page no longer shows the points I earned previously it does show all of my stats since signing up again. Also, the program on my computer is communicating with the server fine.

It may be a little troubling that I can't see the past stats that's not a big deal. I mean really, I'm not doing it so that I can get a big pat on the back. I'm slightly more altruistic than that (although it sure wouldn't hurt to win the free Premium membership from OLS!). :gift:

People who signed up just before the last crash may have been totally wiped out, and have to rejoin.

I'm not sure what you mean by "logged off" or "logged on" - to what (your computer, or your UD account)? As long as your computer is on (and I suppose, you are "logged on" to your computer - if that is relevant to how your computer is set up), the UD Agent will do its work. (You do not need to be logged in to your UD Agent account.) For the most part, it will be transparent to you. So just go about your normal business, and you should hardly know it's there. :gvibes:

I don't understand the CPU problem (if there really is a problem), so I don't have an answer for that. You can allocate how much hard drive space to use for each device, but I still don't know if this is relevant to your question.

You said that the UD Agent "downloaded another machine" on your computer??? Did you mean instead that you found another device (computer) was added to your UD Agent account? If that's what you meant instead, the recent server problems that the UD site had resulted in many glitches to many people's accounts, especially to those who recently signed up (~6/10-7/28/05). Like you, I also had to create a "new" account, and for some reason I was listed as being a part of a different team. So I had to "rejoin" our team.

I have 102 GB free on my hard drive, so I know I have plenty free and the grid is only using about a little over 5000KB. When I put it on snooze the CPU usage goes back down too between 0-10 depending on what I have running at the time. The computer acts really slow and glitchy when it is up too 100% usage.

This is the first time my computer has done this in the 3 years I have had it. I might call Dell and see if they have a fix for it. I guess I'll just keep running it when it is on screensaver mode, until I get it figured out.

I had some problems on one computer when I first installed it - I uninstalled it and reinstalled it, and it seemed to help (don't ask me why!). Good luck with it. :gvibes:

Nope - look at the first post here http://www.online-sweepstakes.com/forums/showthread.php?t=118977

If you win, Brent posts your UD name, which you will recognize. When you PM him to accept the win, he posts your OS username alongside the UD name.

If you go to the Grid.org forums (much like ours), and check out the (read only) Member News section, it will keep you up to date (sort of) on what's going on. They are having problems with the tables that store the member and team stats and working on rebuilding them. The stats aren't gone... just temporarily (I hope) erased! Keep crunching and they will get it all back together!

The site has been down for the last couple of days. :worry:

Update: Just got into the member section, and checked the member news:

Dear Members,

This is a reminder that Grid.org will be physically moving to a new facility this weekend. This will provide better reliability and is part of the Grid.org migration. Grid.org must be completely powered down in order to move. This will include the forum, member web, and the grid itself.

Since this is not a trivial outage, we cannot give an exact time that Grid.org will be down. The outage will take as long as it takes and it may be a day or two before everything is back online.

It just means that your computer can't connect to the UD servers to download your data. It's usually because of their servers & not because of the users pc. The program will keep trying until it gets a connection & then will adjust your results.

http://forum.grid.org/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=8844
Question:

The UD software is displaying a blinking yellow exclamation mark, and when I move my mouse over it, it displays the text "Unable to connect to server, backing off..."
What does this mean?

Answer:

This question is partially explained in the message which is displayed if you open the UD agent whilst the yellow exclamation mark is present, and also in the UD FAQ on Connecting to the server.

There are a number of possible causes for you receiving this message, each of which is explained below.

1. You do not have a currently available internet connection.
This is the most likely explanation if you are on a dial-up connection. The UD agent will simply wait and upload the results the next time you connect to the internet.
2. Your computer is unable to connect to the UD server due to connection problems between your machine and the server, such as congestion at your ISP or heavy traffic elsewhere on the internet.
3. The UD server is down for maintainence.
4. The UD server is busy due to an upgrade to the UD software or tasks.

If it is unable to connect, the UD Agent will automatically retry until it makes its connection, adding time between each retry attempt. This space of time increases exponentially until it reaches an hour in length, then holds steady so that the agent only attempts to connect once an hour. You can force the agent to retry the connection by double-clicking on the UD icon in the task tray and then clicking on the OK button in the box which opens.

I have it running now in virtual mode on a Mac Mini using Windows 98/Virtual PC. For a long time it showed no progress, but I finally have 1% finished. I have to leave the virtual Windows desktop running for the computations to take place. My configuration is a strange one indeed.

My project is LIGANDFIT Cancer Research Project Phase II.

I'm not quite sure how this works. Like sweepyhead, it took a long time for it to start tracking anything. In fact, I think it ran for two days without showing that it accomplished anything even though it worked on two different programs.

It switches between Rosetta, the human proteome folding project and Liganfit, whatever that is and things seem to be moving along.

Oh well...so long as it doesn't damage my computer and aids cancer research, I'm happy.

I just looked and you still don't have any units. We started about the same time and I currently have 8.

I know that it seemed forever for mine to start accumulating. In fact, I thought something was wrong because it appeared to complete a test and didn't register. I went to the site and read that it sometimes happen due to no fault or control of us or our computers. I didn't really understand the reason.

I started clicking around, putting the screen saver on and off and then couldn't remember the original settings. Mine is set at: Screensaver off and Snooze 1 minute. It does seem that the test floats around on my screen like a screensaver for a bit before the monitor turns off.

But I've not shut down my computer. This old laptop is hooked up to DSL and stays on day and night, even when I'm asleep. The only thing it does is go into a sleep mode. It wakes right up when I move the mouse.

I still don't know what's wrong here. The current test has logged over 76 hours on my machine, not counting the completed 600 tests, but I don't have even a second that was credited, and no points for the team.

I don't know if I'm doing something wrong. Maybe I shouldn't bother running this on a Macintosh.

I wouldn't recommend running it this way.

United Devices puts a time limit on each result. I beleive it's two weeks. Meaning that if the result is completed and returned to UD more than two weeks after it started running on your computer, it's not accepted.

I don't think it's a good idea from a technical viewpoint either.

Well, you must admit it's a creative configuration. Windows 98 is extremely unstable, and I've been running this on a wing and a prayer.

I'm not sure I understand what a "result" is. I had two sets of 600 ligands that completed their docking runs, and the third is 87% finished. After the information was uploaded to UD, another set was begun immediately. These are not results? I kinda hate to yank the one that's running right now because it's almost done.

The Ligand project has ended, and I received 1338 points on my member information screen and CPU time, so it was working. Yay Macintosh! All of this was done in Virtual PC. I have moved onto the Rosetta Human Proteome Folding Project.

Is there a way to limit the size of the download or project? I've been trying to do accomplish a bit at work, but the projects I'm downloading take too long. Our computers at work delete any new downloads when powered off, so since it never finishes it gets deleted. I can't leave it run after I leave. Therefore, is there a way to change the settings to only accept projects less than a certain size/time limit?

Weird. Mine shows 22,486 but the site shows me at 22,489...three points higher than my desktop icon thingie shows. Oh well, at least it's moving. I just hope it really is generating some data that will be useful for cancer research. It just seems to run the same two programs over and over and over again.

Normally, I wouldn't put anything on my computer like this, but since it is for cancer and it seems to have the approval of so many here at OLS I decided to join in.

There is more than a little delay, especially when you're on a big project. I was testing Ligand which produced results quickly, and points were listed in a couple of days. But now it's running Rosetta which has been the most cumbersome, slowest testing set. The test was stuck at 8.6% for weeks until it finally moved along to 9.7 yesterday. For a long time I thought the software was not working. I can see that some of these test may take a year or more.

Same here. I wasn't eligible for the last membership drawing because it register anything for me in that two week period, even though the computer was active most of the time.

I too would like to learn more about how these programs, running the same two over and over and over again, helps with cancer research. If anyone knows post it so the rest of us can understand exactly how this works.

Because many of the recent work units are taking a long time to complete, and because a lot of people only run UD part-time, I've been more forgiving of the work-unit completed in the last 2 weeks rule. As long as you've returned a work-unit in the past month, you're eligible for the drawing.

Open up the UD program, click the check mark on the bottom right (preferences) and see what it has to say there. Is the box for "Run only as a screensaver" unchecked? On the right, does it say "Everyday" and under that "Anytime" in both spaces? If so, it should be running all the time.

Try reading the project's website at http://www.grid.org/projects/

The VERY quick version:

The Cancer Research Project will advance research to uncover new cancer drugs. What your computer does is screen molecules for ones that interact with certain proteins that have been targeted for possible cancer therapy.

The Human Proteome Folding Project will predict the protein structure of the human genome. Understanding the complete set of human proteins will help lead to treatments for a number of diseases.

You don't need to transfer the program over. Just go to the UD homepage & download the program on your new computer. After you install it and sign in your stats will be updated to reflect your current counts. They will show that you added a new device to your profile. I added a new pc this past Xmas so I speak from experience. ;)

FYI, if you have a project running that is almost complete you might want to wait for it to finish & upload before you get rid of it on the old pc. If you stop it before it finishes & uploads that current project will be lost. Not a big deal though.

Congrats on your new computer!!! :jump: :toot:

Just downloaded the program.. This is awesome and hopefully when I get the new computer we will have two hooked up.. Will I have to set up a different account for the second computer or just sign in and let the program run on both with the original account? Thanks..

:gvibes: :gvibes:
I signed up all my PC's (except one I messed up, and started a new account)
under one account. Advantage of doing just one account, is that your points
will build up faster that way. :halo:

So what does this mean: Your points will build up faster that way"??

Is there some benefit to "points"?

How are points used?
The calculation of Points is the method United Devices uses to measure your contribution to our Internet Distributed Computing projects. Points are used for competitive comparison on the stats pages. Members can use points to build entries in an incentive program (when available), or points can represent the amount of charitable donations we make on behalf of Members.

If you are using Windows (Windows XP is what I am looking at), go into the Control Panel, and to the Power Options settings. Choose the appropriate configuration that fits your requirements or create a new one. You can modify the actions for AC vs. battery power, lid open/lid closed, etc.

Yell if you get stuck...

with the Grid, but noting is showing new points including everyone on our team.
Any info? :worry:

It happens every now and then. Stats aren't updated for several days and they get behind. UD will probably be making an announcement soon in their forums about the lack of stat updates:

Member News [read only]
http://forum.grid.org/phpBB/viewforum.php?f=1

And you can find UD members disusing the lack of recent updates here:

Member-to-Member Support
http://forum.grid.org/phpBB/viewforum.php?f=6

I wouldn't worry about it, it's been my experience that the stats are always updated eventually.

As long as the program is running, it will do the reporting itself (and then start over on a new project automatically). You just have to have an internet connection at the time it wants to report (if you're on dialup, but of course you will have connection if on DSL or cable). :)

FYI, based on the member news area of the grid.org forums, it looks like the stat reporting for the grid.org site is down, probably until next week:

Dear Members,

United Devices is closed Dec 25, 2006 - Jan 1, 2007 for the holidays. I am aware of the current issue and will try to contact our IT department, but the issue may not be resolved until after the holidays. I apologize for this inconvenience.

Sorry, rather than go thru all the pages of posts, I'll ask here:

I'm thinking of signing up, but my husband has a couple of questions::
1. Does this give them 'access' to your computer? (i.e. bank account #s, cc #s, etc)
2. Can we even do it when we have cable internet with a router that has a firewall of it's own, meaning we can't turn it off/on, make changes to it, etc.

If anyone can answer these, I'd appreciate it!
Thanks :)

Hi jill92802 :wavy: The ud program is completely safe. They do not have access to your personal info. This is from their security FAQ (http://www.grid.org/help/faq_security.htm) page:
Will my privacy be compromised?

No. No personally identifiable information is required to run the UD Agent. You do not need to provide us with any personal information after downloading to run the UD Agent. However, some location information is required to have your points and cpu time included on some stats pages. Members are told every instance where their e-mail addresses might be used and are given the option to allow or disallow specific e-mail uses. You decide what news and information you wish to receive from us, and you have the ability to view and change these preferences at any time. The UD Agent itself does not read information beyond its specific directory, except for occasional use of the Windows temporary directory during the processing of Work Units. Beyond this, the only information taken from the computer by the UD Agent is the system information required to determine the individual computer's contribution (see "How does the UD Agent determine the information that it gathers from my machine" for more information.) Furthermore, all transactions involving the exchange of this information, whether through the member section of our website or during registration of the UD Agent, go through secure servers to protect the data. To find out more about Member privacy, review our Member Privacy Policy (http://www.grid.org/about/gs/privacy.htm) .

Yes you can run it with a router and firewall. I have cable internet with a wireless router hooked up to 2 pcs and I have Windows XP firewall enabled on both also. No problems with the program. You just download & install it & let it be. It will work in the backgroud as long as your pc is on.

Here is the general FAQ (http://www.grid.org/help/faq_howitworks.htm) for the ud program. I think you will find it very helpful with any questions. :)

Joined over the weekend (using the account name Dragnipurake), no problems getting the program installed or myself set up on the team. It's been a while since I'd run any distributed clients like this, and I'd always noticed at least some drag at times. Not a bit of it with the UD agent so that makes me happy.

Unfortunately at work, they've handed down a request that everyone shut their computers down at night in an effort to save money... ...but I'm in IT and I'll see what I can do about getting it on at least a few more.

What's this all about? I didn't get any notice of anything. And my UD pgm is still running.

Never mind - I see. What a shame!

If we move on to another project, can we vote on which one we'd be interested in?

I'd like something along the lines of tracking environmental changes or mapping the human genome.

If none of those, I'd like to find out if the Univ of Wisc is having a similar program for stem cell research.

Second - If the project is over and done, here is a list of other projects we can consider.
