View Full Version : Stupid Tab Renewals!

The one bad thing about your birthday is having to fork over $ to have your tabs renewed. I think every state sets their scale differently - Michigan bases their fee on what your car is worth new. So lucky me just spent $101 to get a new orange sticker to put on my plate.

AND they've changed when your tabs "technically" expire - the 1st of your birth month, not on your birthday. So if a cop wanted to hassle you, if your tabs aren't renewed by the 1st of the month, that's a ticket.

How much did your tab renewal cost?

$46.01 based on DH's birthday this weekend....only problem is that we just paid to register the car when we bought it 4 months ago..so we paid twice in one year...that's another FL issue that ranks up there with their bugs!

When we lived in FL, DH bought a car and had to pay twice to register it within a couple of months. We live in TX now, it only costs about $70 per car, but it's for the ENTIRE year. When we lived in CT, on top of paying for registering for your car(s) yearly, they had an excise tax based on the age and weight of the car. DH is in the military, so our cars were exempt from that tax. But I know I had some friends that had to pay hundreds of dollars just in excise taxes on their cars.

They just raised the rates here in Kentucky. You pay a registration fee, plus whatever the taxes are based in your county of residence. So it will vary from county to county. Registration now is $15 and will be $21. I think for our 2003 Blazer we paid something like $170 dollars last November.

Oh I don't miss excise taxes(we had those in MA) in fact I keep waiting for bills to show up..lol. My favorite year was when our town re-assessed the value of a vehicle in order to collect more taxes because there was a budget shortfall. For a house I could understand...at least that is likely to appreciate in value but a car does nothing but lose value...but since they raised property taxes 2 years in a row they had to go somewhere else for the money.

What are tab renewals?

In MI older cars go by the weight. At one point we had two beaters and it was about $76 each to renew tabs on those cars. We donated them to charity motors and got a 2005 in April but I have no idea how much the tabs will be for it. It can't be as bad as paying $150 to tab the other two though!

I've never had to renew them on my birthday - instead it's due on the yearly anniversary of when I first registered my truck (June). Once a year I send the DMV $35 or so, they send me new stickers, and I'm good to go. Of course, I drive a 15 year old small pickup, so if they go by car value it means a fairly small bill.

Okay, I think I am slowly catching on.

You're talking about your car's registration, right? Here they are renewed every year on the date you first registered the vehicle, like Tofu said. I've never heard them called "tabs" though, we call it "tags." It goes by the car's value--I just paid $205 to renew the tags on a 2005 Mini.

never heard of that...is that like the insurance you get when you buy liscence plates? cus thats cheap lol
our liscence plates cost us roughly $200 depending on the age of our vehicle...and they expire whenever you first registered the vehicle although you can do a monthly payment plan etc

we also have to pay for drivers liscences once a year and that is in the month you were born, but at the end of the month (ie mine is dec 31 due) and that is always 25/year

you can buy additional insurance on your car from SGI and such but we never do. Not worth it esp as the plate insurance covers everything already

$170 for an '03 Elantra here ($25 special plate fee included). Yearly based on purchase month. It goes down a little every year, I think it was about $265 or so when I bought the car in 2003.

Oh, TAGS! I was thinking you had to pay a fee to drink Tab, the drink.

Ours are just $65 here in Florida, but in Oklahoma, my gosh, you almost had to take out a load to renew every year there.
