I was a lifetime oatmeal hater until my doctor ordered me to eat it. Now I have it nearly every morning. I buy all the varieties of instant oatmeal I can find and stock up when it's on sale. I hat the plain, and I mix in some fruit usually if I end up with some of that.
I generally mix it with water, cook in microwave, then pour some fat free milk on it.

You can add peanut butter or sugar free maple syrup or raisins or low fat butter ?

I eat oatmeal almost every morning. I put it on to cook while I get ready.
Try slicing a banana in it, or throwing in a little box of raisins, before eating it. that makes it better for me.

I'm about to start adding oatmeal to my daily routine. My Mom adds a half teaspoon of cinnamon to her oatmeal every day. She says it is supose to help lower your triglycerides. Even if it doesn't, it will sure improve the taste of the oatmeal.

I go with raisins also... if you use the minute kind, boil them for a minute before you add the oatmeal and it will sweeten it more
I also put raisins in my brownies :)

I hate those pre-flavored oatmeals, but I often add own flavoring. A drop or three of orange, black walnut or almond extract can really do something great to oatmeal.
I also like to add some dried fruit like currants, apricots, raisins, etc. If you use dried fruit, increase the amount of water you add to the cereal, because of the amount that the fruit will absorb.

Before I knew I had Celiac disease (can't eat wheat, rye, barley and oats) I used to eat oatmeal every day. I used the quick cooking type (3 minutes on stove) and microwaved it with some milk, raisins (added fiber) and a little brown sugar and some cinnamon. If you don't want sugar my Dad uses splenda in his.
Some people put a little applesauce in it. You could use a lot of different fruits like canned peaches chopped small or whatever you like.
I miss oatmeal sometimes.

Yumm, I have added bananas but never thought of peanut butter (try the all natural)!!
To make it healthy, use the quick or slow cook oatmeal. The instant is not really that much better than cold cereal. If you make the slow cooked, you can make it once a week and just keep it in the fridge. Take out what you want to eat and heat it with a little water or milk.

Almond butter and coarse salt!
Adding a little plain or vanilla yoghurt/soy yoghurt and a heavy-handed dash each of cinnamon and nutmeg = French toast in a bowl.
(I also mix canned lentils in with mine, with the almond butter and salt, but... The looks people give me for this are probably variations of the same look that's on your face right now. Chacun à son goût.)

About twice a week I make steel cut oats [they take about a half hour to cook]. I add a little butter and a bunch of brown sugar and sometimes some milk.

I love oatmeal with brown sugar! I know not the answer you were looking for. Another suggestion would be to try adding Trader Joe's Maple Praline Granola into it just before eating. Give some sweetness and crunchy. very tasty :gvibes: I make the standard cooking one with water not milk. And definately prefer Quaker Oats to generic. The oats hold up better. You could slice up some dates for healthy sweetness.

Why do so many of us shy away from a little sugar? 1 teaspoon has only 11 calories. I know these are considered "empty" calories but I think the benefit outweighs the risk here. Oatmeal has been proven to reduce cholesterol and to be good for the heart.
The only way I can eat oatmeal is with a bit of sugar in it. So I indulge in those 11 puny calories and think instead of the good I am doing my health. JMMHO :smile9:

Here's mine. I don't eat it but husband loves it:
In a Tupperware
4 cups quick oatmeal
1 cup brown sugar
1 cup raisens
1 cup dried cranberries
1/2 cup toasted walnuts
2 TBLSPNS grated orange peel
Toss all ingredients in the tupperware and store in cupboard.
To Make:
Bring 1 cup apple cider or apple juice to a boil. Add 3/4 cup oat mixture, cover and cook 1 minute on Medium.
You can actually make a big bowl of this on Sunday and and put in small containers. Then they are easy to pop in the microwave, or pack for lunch :gvibes:
