View Full Version : Does anyone else have a George Forman Grill?

Current

I got one for X-mas, the smallest one. I love it soooooo much, I think I am gonna go buy a bigger one! So far all I have made in it is hot-dogs, hamburgers, and bacon. I'm amazed how much grease is drained off.....and to think I have been frying in that stuff all these years.....

What all do you guys make in yours? What works in this thing and what have you tried that didn't work too well?

Thanks!!!

I love, love, LOVE mine!!!!!

I make steak in it all the time, and I cook chicken breasts too, and also grilled cheeses are the best with it! I have also cooked fish, and that was not bad either....I don't think I have come across anything that worked badly in it. It so simple, and easy clean up.

Enjoy!

We bought one for the inlaws. The burgers were great. Our niece was totally fascinated watching the grease run out. I suppose when my husband gets back to work that we will probably get one for ourselves. Enjoy!

I gave my brother one for x-mas and bought us one for ourselves but go with the big one if you have alot of people. The chicken breasts we get frozen from the store wouldn't fit 2 on a small one.

I got one for my birthday last year & use it about 1x per week. Love to cook my salmon in marindade.

One of essential keys to unleashing the best flavors and textures from grilled meats and vegetables is in the marinade.

They are nice and cook a lot of things very easily. However,I have found that t-bone steaks are very hard to get done because of the bone. Not sure if other "bone in" meats are as tough to cook on it because I haven't tried them. The bone in the t-bones won't allow the grill to touch the meat once the steak is cooked a little bit,so it takes forever to finish them.

Other than that,I love them too!

Don't have the grill...but I just ordered a Baby George rotisserie from Spiegel (my $100 gift certificate that I won last year from Winfreestuff expires in a couple days), after having read all the reviews at Amazon.com.

I'm jazzed...while I was at the site a popup window offered 15% off any purchase, one time only. So, with the discount, my GC, the clearance sale, and no sales tax to Californians...I'm getting the rotisserie, and handheld vacuum cleaner, and one of those silly foot soaker gizmos...and only paying around $10 total, inc. shipping. Can't wait for my post-Xmas goodies to arrive.

I received the second to the smallest size two years ago for Christmas. Wore it out about 5 months ago. Bought another for myself, a little larger and a different shape. Although I think I liked the one I had in size and shape better - it wasn't available when I needed to replace it. Reason it wore out, I'm sure, is that I insist on putting everything in the dishwasher - which can have bad results after awhile. But I got 19 months of use out of it - probably $59 - using it 2, 4, 5, or 6 times a week. Used it most often for breakfast sausage. And I agree about the fat that you collect being amazing. I will continue to clean my new grill in the dishwasher and expect a couple of years out of it at least.

Georgie girl you put the whole thing in the dishwasher?? Electrical cord and all??? Hmmmm wouldn't that be like sticking the toaster oven or the coffee maker in the dishwasher? LOL Sorry but I must be confused!! Heehee

I've got one too! I think it makes the best steaks - in fact I only used my outdoor grill 2-3 times last summer because I prefer to use the GF grill.

I've also used it to grill chicken breasts, hot dogs, burgers, etc. I never thought about doing grilled cheese sandwiches, thanks for the idea Agcshort!

Georgiegirl: I'm dying to know more about putting it in the dishwasher - for me the only drawback to the grill is having to wash it by hand! Do you just stick the whole thing in there?

I love cooking grilled veggies (pepper, onion and mushrooms) or fried tators on mine.

georgiegirl
January 5th, 2003, 11:33am
Yes, the whole thing, cord attached. Just make sure it's dry before you plug it in again! I don't put the toaster in there but I do put in crockpot (old type, cord perm attached); fondue pot (perm attached); and electric grill (from which the cord comes off and I don't put cord in). Now, my new electric cooking pot has realized that it only makes sense to be able to wash all in dishwasher - instructions say you can wash it in the dishwasher. I would have washed it there anyway.
(I probably would put the toaster in there except it doesn't get that dirty - oh, yeah, and it's attached to the bottom of the counter. I gues I'll just hose it down when it needs deep cleaning).

You understand perfectly!

GEOGIRL

PS Employees of home appliance companies need not post to tell me I should not put their appliances in the dishwasher. I already know this and do not plan to sue if the items wear out early. By the way, that fondue pot is 20 years old - granted I only use it a dozen or so times a year but it's still going strong.

georgiegirl
January 5th, 2003, 11:34am
Of course, you do have to use several rows of the rack to prop the grill open so that the surfaces are exposed. To me this is small payment for not washing that thing by hand. My time is valuable - I must sweep, sleep, and sweep again!

HMMMMM?

I've had salmon that was "cooked" in a dishwasher...(no soap, naturally...it was good)

GeorgieGirl...just promise us you won't stick the kids or pets in there! LOL:grin3:

I have the 2nd smallest one, with the bun warmer. I used it for the atkins diet. I found that the grill was too small for 2 frozen hamburger patties, which was disappointing. It also seemed to dry out (probably reducing the fat of) the meat I have cooked. I would definitely recommend the larger grills for almost anyone who cooks more than one item at a time.

I use the dangerous wet paper towel method to wipe the grill surface after it has cool for a minute. That works pretty well.

I bought one for each of the kids. Especially like to do shrimp kabobs and scallops. Salmon comes out perfect. A must have!!

I got one of the smaller ones from MyPoints - in CA don't have to do whole offer sometimes - just send in postcard to get gift! $0.23 for a small GF grill. We love it!! Read instruction book (strange, I know) - and saw the grilled cheese sandwiches - try grilled ham and cheese also. We also LOVE pork chops - earlier comment about bone in is correct - but for ease and a few minutes longer - ok with me. Got a second one (same way) for a friend for birthday! Neat little gadgets! :smile3:

I had the small one and "upgraded" to the family size this year; also bought a family size for my mother-in-law in Mexico (for Christmas). I use it mostly for pork chops, hot dogs and burgers. For steak, chicken, ribs and smoked sausage, I use my Popeil rotisserie oven.

I don't use the bun warming feature; I prefer to carmelize hamberger buns on the griddle with a little mayonnaise. I haven't fired up the outdoor grill since we got it.

I just tried an experiment. I took two small soft flour tortillas, put taco seasoned hamburger, cheese, and salsa in-between them, and sorta pinched the edges together. Then I spread a little bit of Shedds Spread on the outside of the tortillas. Placed it in the grill until I thought it was done.

AWESOME!!! (sometimes I amaze myself)

This grill is so cool....you can experiment and not screw up too much. I gotta get a bigger one.

i must be nuts i HATE my GF POS. We have the small one and the only thing that doest come out over done is boneless skinless chicken breast. Then no one wants to clean the thing since its such a pain in the butt.. so it sits next to the sink, rotting, stinking up a perfectly clean kitchen. Ive banished mine to the far reaches to the cupboard above the fridge, only to be pulled out when someone asks where i keep that neat grill they got me 3 xmases ago. BAH BLAH! i was so excited when we got our REAL grill at a garage sale for $20- with a brandnew FULL tank... man o man those folks didnt know what they were giving away!

Fidget....my mom told me how to clean mine. After you are done, unplug it..and while it is still warm, place some wet, wringed out paper towels on it, covering the grill part. Close the lid, let it cool, and then just wipe clean. It's worked for me.

The George Foreman Grill is the absolute best way to cook bacon! No mess and the grease drains off. Nice crispy bacon in half the time without the splatter. I'll have to try it for grilled cheese. Also potato slices seasoned with olive oil and garlic are great!

I love mine. It does cook rather quickly so if you have a thick piece of steak or chicken breast you will need to flatten it a bit otherwise it will be raw on the inside. It is the single most used appliance in my kitchen apart from the coffee maker!

I am relieved to read all of your messages re the George Foreman Grill. I received one (from my husband??) for Christmas. I was a little puzzled, but acted grateful. Everytime I saw a TV commercial, I always remarked that they looked hard to clean and I didn't think I would like one. Then he bought me one for Christmas. I think like most men, he only listens with "half an ear". I have been afraid to try it, I HATE things that are a nuisance to clean. You all make it seem worthwhile. Thanks! I just love reading all of the messages even though I don't respond too often.

Glad I could help Carogonza!! I've been busy experimenting with mine. Stuffing soft flour tortillas with yummy stuff and then putting them in there is working out great!! This is gonna sound gross, but I put mac and cheese between two tortillas, spread the outside with margerine........YUM!!!!!!! Top with a bit of salsa, chopped onions and shredded cheese........

Glad to read this info. I have one and I hated it because I never felt that I was getting it clean. While I don't have a dishwasher I will soak it in dishwater and clean it that way. It's only taking up space now anyway. Our son gave it to us because he has one and uses it all the time. I don't think I would like to cook fish on it though, as it might hold the taste?? But I am gonna get it out today and clean it up again. It's worth the try. I do chicken breast about once a week....Now, someone should start a recipe thread...what do ya think?:cheer: :cheer2: :cheer3: NEVER DRIVE FASTER THAN YOUR ANGEL CAN FLY! ! !

I have the Biggest One and kept thinking it was a waste to use it when I only cook for myself. But know that I think about it... I hate washing pots and pans even more and with my GF I only wipe it down....so the light bulb has just gone on.

Noooooooo - Don't put it in the dishwasher.

When you've done with the grilling, wet a couple of paper towels, squirt on a bit of DW liquid
(the type for hand washing) and put the towels in the UNPLUGGED grill. Close it up, and when it cools just wipe the grill plates down and then use a wet PT to rinse the grill plates.

Christ! How many tons of fatty beef are you guys cooking in these grills to warrant having to put them in a dishwasher???? I've made plenty of meals in mine (actually a Black & Decker, same thing, lower price) and never had anything I couldn't clean up with a damp sponge. The collector at the bottom was filled up of course but my God...are you guys cooking sides of beef in these things or what??

Sounds like you're making all kinds of quesadillas. I've never met a quesadilla I didn't like!

I've even been eyeing this inexpensive quesadilla maker at Amazon that supposedly does a great job crimping the edges and cutting it into perfect bite size slices...

Remember those tasty, greezy burgers from the little local eatery? The ones with the old black griddle? I like to cook my burgers on the Foreman, then put the cheese (and onions) on the burger between the hamburg roll and grill the buns with with the burger inside. The cheese melts and the outside of the buns get carmelized and a little crispy...they remind me of the old ones at WT Grants.

Seasoned potato slices are fast and easy on the grill...drizzle with olive oil and use whatever spices you like...I like coarse salt, garlic and onion powder. Portabella mushroom slices cooked the same way are great. Both of these are even better if you've already cooked meat on the grill so they pick up some of the flavor.

When we want quick fajitas I grill all the veggies on my little GF while the steak is grilling. Yummy! Also good to make veggies to go on a salad the next day with left over steaks!! My kiddos love grilled cheese sandwiches and hamburgers on it. We gave one to the teenage boy next door and he actually put it in his room so no one else in the house could use it without his permission!!!

I make any quick meat on my little GF, pork chops, chicken, burgers, dogs, chicken breasts. But I do agree with another poster, use boneless for best results!!

I love mine too and here's a great tip for cleaning the machine once you are done cooking. The gunk gets stuck on the machine pretty bad so here's the awesome tip from my Grandma.........Get about 8 or so paper towels and fold them up. Get them all wet and once you are done cooking - right afterwards - put the paper towels on the machine and close the lid. You can leave it for an hour or over night. The gunk will just be like water and you can just wipe it off!

Happy grilling!
