View Full Version : Why Did You Start Sweeping?

I know, I know.......to win the prizes....DUH!!

But that's not what I mean. Here's why I started:

My DH took me to New York for our anniversary a couple of summers ago. We had a lot of fun and wanted to go back, but I knew we couldn't afford it anytime soon. I decided that there just HAD to be a way to win a trip, so I started searching online and found OLS. :)

Before OLS, I had won a few small prizes from my local radio and tv stations.

As for why I continue to sweep, well the sweeping bug bit me. I've only been sweeping a little over a year, and haven't won anything big, but the small things I HAVE won have enabled me to give my family gifts (and therefore, taking it easy on my pocketbook) or get things I wouldn't have bought for myself.

Why did YOU start sweeping? :sherlock:

No really.....I can only read so many books, I got a new 'puter, and I googled seepstakes one day and lo' & behold I found OLS!

I figured, "hey, if they can enter and WIN, why couldn't I?" So that's when this hobbie balloned. Now I'm attending SWEEPERS ANNON!!!!  We have coffee and tell our stories about our wins or losses.....we have a BALL!! :rofl3: :rofl3: just jokin' :joker:!!!!!

When I worked for the National Cancer Institute answering phone calls from cancer patients and their families and going over their treatment options, ways to pay for their treatment, the signs of dying, clinical trials, the emotional aspect of having a child diagnosed with cancer, ect I needed something between calls to let me daydream and I entered contests so I could dream about going on a trip, or buying a new wardrobe.

I think it was to start winning money a long time ago when I was so broke I couldn't hardly feed my kids. I never did win much years ago....so I gave it up after a couple of years. Now that I am back again, I win a lot of really cool stuff. :cheer7:

Kind of by accident really. I got laid off from my job and was on unemployment. Had a lot of free time on my hands and that's when I really started using the computer, job searches, freebies, etc. Found a sweep site, not this one at that time, and decided to give it a try. I got really lucky almost immediately. Conseco had this instant win contest where you go scratch these cards and win sports merchandise, footballs, hats, shirts, and you "won" entries into the grand prize drawings. They had 4 categories, NFL, Nascar, NBA, and Fishing I believe. Well I started winning all of these instants for the football category. Every day I seemed to be winning a football or a hat and I won 4 or 5 entries into the grand prize drawing. Low and behold I ended up winning the NFL grand prize which was a trip to the Pro Bowl in Hawaii. I remember they notified me by email and my husband thought it was a complete scam. He wouldn't let me tell anyone until we knew for sure. I was on pins and needled for like three weeks because that's how long it took them to UPS the official paperwork. Hawaii was a blast, been trying to win a trip back there ever since. And I was forever addicted to sweeping.

Well couple months ago I went on another sweep site I visited off and on and was just bored messing around and entered a few, one of them was the Gap instant win game before Christmas and first time I played it I won 50.00 cash! That was my first win EVER online! That hooked me, so I went back day after day to that one site and on their message board found THIS site. I loved it so much here I bought a premie membership and HERE I AM! Two months and several prizes later!!

I had been entering HGTV sweeps since the first giveaway. I use to go to Wild Oats and they had an entry box there for HGTV dream house. I was also always checking HGTV website for new sweepstakes then got to thinking, there must be other companies where you can enter online, so I started using a search engine to find sweeps, and that's when I ran into this website and the rest is history. :)

I started sweeping when someone on our little local forum posted she had won flowers and gave this website. I have been at it ever since. I need someway to relax, my day is full to the brim of taking care of everyone and this is my little time alone. My family respects me about it and of coarse cant wait to hear what I have won next. Got my 15 year old in on it too and he wins more than me..but that is ok! And then everyone here is so nice, I just decided to stay and keep on keeping on. No big wins yet, but they will come one of these days. Until then....its nice to read about everyone elses. Good luck everyone!!!

Well. I think like you, I wanted to win a trip. I found ezsweeps about 3 years ago. Used it almost every day for 3 years... never won 1 thing! So decided one day (last Nov.) to google around, found OLS, started entering the ending today sweeps, entered one that ended Nov.30 and won! We are going to L.A! Am so excited! All those year wasted on Ezsweeps, and come here, within 1 month a Grand prize! I love OLS!

I love surprises and I love to win things. This is cheaper than the casino or the lottery. Nothing better than finding something in the mail, on your doorstep on an email saying "Congratulations, You're a Winner!!! It makes my day

Got an e-mail with an instant win sweep on it from Sara Lee. Second time I tried it, I won a $25 Master Card gift card. My dad was a big time snail mailer from WAY BACK  and something clicked in my head that I could probably enter online now instead of by mail.

Searched - found OLS - entered an eBay sweep and won another $25 - both of these wins were on the same day!!!! That hooked me and continuing to win cool stuff keeps me here.

DH encourages me to sweep - it keeps me from spending money (except at gift swap time) which was my previous hobby! :smile9:

I was extremly bored. I was a stay at home mom, and my hubby worked day shift at the time.. so one day I was doing different searches, and I looked up sweeps (my mom was big on them),and I somehow managed to find this site. I took a break for a while, but now I'm back!

I was on a chat site and someone posted they had won a big prize from a Con Agra daily. I went and won $50. That was the bug that bit me. I have only gone to one other site and it was an instant win only site, someone there posted about here and POOF here I have been ever since. My two most recent wins have been Premium, so I am pleased and will renew my subscription next month. :cheer7:

I started contesting in the 8th grade, when I tried to win a bike (I didn't have one). However, I won a helicopter ride instead. I'm terrified of heights.

Today, I'm a junkie! I really enjoy this site and the people who come here. It's part of my daily routine, just like taking a bath.

I entered a few sweeps every now and then. Then one day I thought I hadn't entered sweeps for awhile.
I found OLS and just kept sweeping till I was up to 800 sweeps a day.
I developed severe back problems and had to cut down on the dailies to 350 or so, but I seem to win just as much as before.
I have won a New York Trip, an 60gig IPOD and a digital camera. The only things left on my list are a computer and video card.

My wife RBUSKE started a few months after I did, I think because she saw me winning. My first win was a basket of hair and soap products.

I had lost my job, and was trying to do currency day trading on the computer. I was not making money on that, and was so nervous I could not sleep at nights. I would just surf the internet, and punched in the words contest. Came up with the about.com contests and entered that for a while, and won nothing, but was fascinated by this concept that I could actually win something if I never gave up. Somehow I found OLS and couldn't believe all the contests. I entered and entered, not knowing anything about 1X onlies, dailies, or being DQed. Of course I never won anything. Finally read all the forums and the rules, and here I am. Anyways I almost got it now... And the big win is coming soon! Don't imagine I can stop doing this now.

We didn't have much money and only one car. Most of the jobs here were taken by high school kids, as I have only a high school diploma. I found a free sample site in a magazine and then went to contests. That was 10 years ago this July!!!

I read an article in People Magazine about a women who made a living off of entering sweepstakes. There was a picture of her surrounded by all the stuff she won! I was amazed. So i started looking around and found OLS. And it has been well worth it. I've won over $10,000 worth of free trips, cash, and other prizes! Someone needs to take a picture with me and all my vasleine lotions and goldfish wallets.

I used to enter the Home Made Simple sweeps out of their newsletters. I thought, "How many other people could possibly be lame enough to actually enter this junk? Of course I'm going to win!" I was so sure that I was the only dork out there who would do such a goofy thing, I went looking for more sweeps to enter and amass my fortune...Imagine my surprise (and some horror) to come across sweeps listing sites...

I started entering sweeps years ago as a way to provide things for my family that we cannot afford. For awhile my eBay business (antiques&collectibles) was doing great but a couple of years ago it took a nose dive. So I worked harder & harder on the sweeps. I do whatever I can from home to earn money as our youngest daughter still lives at home. Even though she is in her second year of college, she doesn't drive...doesn't have a car, can't afford ins.,etc. So I still drive her to & from class and her part-time job. So my schedule revolves around hers :( So right now the best way for me to get any money is to win it. I work extremely hard at it more so than if I had a 40hr. a week job. I had my best year last year...but it was such a struggle. This is one "job" where it doesn't matter how hard you work at it. What matters most it seems is just luck. I see people who win way more than me & spend very little time at it. It really boils down to luck. I don't feel I'm naturally lucky. I feel like I have to work 10x harder to try to make my luck. My husband is self-employed and works extremely hard & is physically worn out. He also just lost his health ins. We have no savings, no 401K, etc. nada, nothing, zip. My dream is to win enough money to pay off our enormous amount of debt and enough for my husband to retire & get the medical care he needs. Entering sweeps keeps me going. If I didn't have the hope everyday that this may be the day I win the big one,I swear I would go jump off the bridge. As luck would have it, I just can't seem to win much online. The big majority of my wins come from snail mail. Which means $$$ for stamps, supplies, etc. Even though I have been fairly successful (over $20k in wins last year)...my husband is constantly griping at me that I am wasting my time. In fact, he doesn't want me to bother him anymore with what I win unless it's something so big that I can call him & tell him he can put down his paint brush and come home.
I so hope I can make that call one day!

In April of 2000, a friend referred me to the now defunct website, freescholarships.com, for a chance to win. I went there every day and I got involved in the chat and games and other stuff and got all of my entries, but winning wasn't my main focus. To make a long story short, their bubble burst along with many of the dotcoms, but I won the last giveaway on the day that they announced that they were going out of business, which was for $5000.

I got that money and I liked the feeling of winning so I searched out sweepstakes. For the next 3-4 years I used another sweepstakes site (which is complete crap compared to this one). On another bored I tried to start a sweepstakes database, but someone who posts here and on the other board referred me to here. And I have been here ever since.

I wish I would have found this site sooner.

I read an article in First magazine in July or August of 2003 about a woman who did contesting and won $8000 worth of stuff in one year. That motivated me to try OLS in Setember of 2003 and I won my first prize 2 weeks after entering. I have been hooked ever since. My daughter is in college and I knew I wouldn't have any vacation money and so far I have won 4 trips. Hawaii, Jamaica, Arizona and California. My big dream though is to win a new vehicle - that would definitely make my day! I enter everyday unless I am on vacation.

I also love OLS and all of the wonderful people here.

Happy contesting to everyone!! and Good Luck!

ps - my family loves the things that I win too, especially those trips!

I started online sweeping way back in the early 90's when the town I lived in got internet access thru BBS's. I ended up being a chat host on the old (and now defunct) GEnie. One day when I was searching (alas, no Google then!), I stumbled across a combination freebie/sweepstakes site. I had no idea what I was doing, but I managed to win a few things, like my beloved Star Trek mobile, Dead Tread sandals, and for some reason, a mess of soap. I searched for and found many more sweepstakes sites, until I found OLS, and I've been here ever since.

My husband went to Iraq and I need something to help the loneliness while he was away. 8 Hours of work a day still take the loneliness away. I have always been one to enjoy entering contests, would send in mail in sweeps etc. I was in a real rut at work and was surfing the net and found the site, I joined over a year ago and have never looked back. It is free and a fun way to dream. So far I have won useful things like 5 bottles of hand lotion, DVD's and weinermobile beanies, but I hope someday to hit it big! It's fun and we aren't hurting ourselves or anyone else

A few years ago I won a contest I found on-line. Got a hundred dollar gift certificate and then I won some Lancome makeup. I realized there must be more contests and started googling and found OLS. Haven't won anything super enormous, but generally win at least a few little things every month and I love the feeling of winning. It's just the little pickup surprise that's a lot of fun, whether it's email, mail or phone. Very happy with a movie ticket, a book, or hand lotion, but my big hope is a trip. jump: :jet:

I actually never thought people won from online contests. Back in 2001 DH and I used to order our movies from a service called Kozmo.com (before Netflix and the like) where they would deliver movies to your door like a pizza. Well after ordering the movies online a pop up came up, and I always used to close them, but for some reason this time I entered it. About 6 months later I get a call that I won an all-inlusive 4night/5day trip to Manzanillo, MX. When the guy called me I almost hung up on him because I thought it was a scam, glad I didn't. So actually winning something is what got me started. About a year and a half later I won 5K, and in 2004 I won a Whirlpool Duet Washer/Dryer. It seems about time for another BIG win!!! :gvibes:

Dreams and relaxation are the two reasons I started sweeping.

I have a somewhat stressful job (not to mention low-paying) job, which I actually enjoy. But when I get home in the evening I need to wind down, relax so I can get to sleep and do it again the next day. Sweeping gives me a chance to do something mindless while giving me the opportunity to dream about that big win that may come my way.

For instance, I've fallen asleep thinking about how my bathroom would sparkle if I won a bathroom update contest. I've snuggled under the covers and wondered who I would take with me if I won a cruise for four. And, being the compulsive worrier that I am, I've also wracked my brain trying to figure out how I'd justify accepting a big trip win when I'm responsible for the taxes.

I was researching how to make a forum and Brett posted on a developers forum about his great site and said to check it out. Well thanks alot. I finished my forum but couldn't figure out how to get people there, and then the more I thought about it the more I think Brett is a genious. I learned the best way to get people to a site was to offer them something of value for free. Makes sense all around. I found myself stuck at home going bonkers because I'm not used to not having a job, or two or three :) . While watching my savings account dwindle away I started first hitting freebie sites, then caught the bug for instant wins, after that perusing the net for contests. I've said it before and I'll say it again, I'm slightly obsessive and tend to dive into things that interest me. I am hooked... that is until I get back to work full time and I can ease off.

The way I see it, this is a lot better than just sitting at home worrying about my financial situation until I can get back on the right track.

Don't ask me how I found this site, but I fell in love with the organization and the forums were SOOOO supportive and mostly friendly.

When I was a pre-teen, I did all the grocery shopping, and to save money, I started clipping coupons from the paper. I noticed the entry forms for the sweepstakes, and I entered them by mail, thinking that even though I was only 11 years old, I was mature for my age, and therefore, eligible.

Stopped working altogether due to disability back in 2000. I started out looking for freebies because I was BROKE...I mean broker than BROKE. The freebies were so abundant at that time. I was gratfeul for every free tube of toothpaste, bar of soap, lotion, etc. One day I was watching Dawson's Creek and they mentioned somethign abotu visiting the WB site for a sweepstakes. I got online by following the link on tv. I entered. I think that was in May of 2002. In August, UPS was knocking on the door with a package. I'd won the first sweep I ever entered. :smile9: I won a Sony PDA worth $600. I didn't even know what the hell a PDA was back then. But I was happy that I'd won. After that, I was HOOKED. I was entering from tv and magazines and then one day I just started doing an online search and finally found this place. :jump: I figured with no money, maybe I could win some of the stuff I wanted.

I'm a cynic by nature. I read a story in Woman's World 3 years ago, let my guard down, and whoa, what an eye opener I got! You'll have to pry my cold dead hands from my keyboard now!
My new belief is if anyone wanted to punish me for whatever reason, take my computer away. ahhhh! I'd lose my marbles.

I have not won many things ever. The first thing I ever won that I really wanted was a microwave back in 1987. I didn't have one, really wanted one but couldn't afford one. A local grocery store near my home had one up for grabs. I must have entered about a hundred times, especially the last week. They left a message on my answering machine.

Now I'm entering mostly for cash to pay down a lot of debt and entering stuff we need or will entertain us for free.

LOL...I'm so cheap!

And I love this site!!

I was searching for free samples. One site had a small sweep running, so I entered it and won! Life hasn't been the same since
