After talking to my husband tonight.... we are "toying" with the idea of moving to Las Vegas, Nevada after the beginning of the year. We are both older and all of our children are grown. We both like the warm climate and love the opportunities that Vegas seems to offer.

Does anyone know of some websites that may offer home rentals in that area? I would greatly appreciate any and all input. Thanks!!!! :cheer7:

are you both retired? i was looking into moving to vegas a few years ago but shyed away because i read it was REALLY tough to get a job. there are many, many people moving there every year. they call it an "employer's market" there because there are way more workers than jobs. you could have 10 years of experience and end up with an entry level job because the competition is fierce. i would try to find some message boards specifically for the area and try google groups (do the normal keyword search and then hit "groups" above. i'd give you all my links, but all of my old bookmarks have been destroyed.

We're close to retirement. But my oldest son is thinking about moving with us (he's 24). I just really need a change. My DH loves to play golf and I love playing in poker tournaments..... it sounds like a match made in heaven! Thanks for the advice.... I'll be using it!

I heard the market is flooded with casinos and people.

They are having trouble securing water rights from the Colorado River. Las Vegas is fighting with Los Angeles area. Las Vegas is a desert, and you need water to survive.

Now Los Angeles has more people, more lobbists, more clout.
I would carefully consider this move.

In addition it isn't that far from where they did nuclear testing.

No one really talks about cancer rates and Vegas.
I honestly believe our government is holding back.

So 1 vote for no.

That's interesting about the water Vala, I just read an article on water consumsion in an old National Geographic (had to kill time waiting with DH in the ER Friday night-he has bronchitois) anywho....the article said that Vegas as a city goes through like double the water than other cities of its size. Now don't quote me on that, but I do remember thinking WOW! on whatever the stat was. I would say just research it carefully, and GO FOR IT! I know property is outrageous there, though.

As far as climate goes I think Arizona is a great place to retire! Beautiful land :cheer7: Not sure if you have your heart set on Vegas though....

Thanks for all the input folks! I really have my heart set on Vegas and actually have done quite a bit of research. I'm pretty sure that the decision has been made to move there in the spring. I'm always up for a new adventure. And if there's a water shortage?..... all the more reason to start showering more with DH!

And Tommy..... I guess that means I just keep getting further away from you dear! :frown3: Thank you so much for the well wishes though.... they mean a lot to me! :smile9:

And Vala.... grateful for the info. I don't worry too much about the nuclear testing done out there causing me cancer. I'm a smoker so I dare say that the tobacco companies have first dibbs on any cancer that I may be getting in the future. No funny, I know but I could get hit by a bus in the safest town in American. :gvibes:

Just a word of warning from someone who just moved away from Vegas. The traffic there is getting unreal! It's almost like driving in LA. They are building more and more and haven't done much with the roads to accomidate all the new growth. It's a great place to visit, but living there is really getting hard. I know a lot of people that are just itching to move away from there and many that already have.
I do wish you luck with wherever you move. :gvibes:

Wouldn't mind living outside of Vegas somewhere but not right in the city. If I could I'd move in a heartbeat!

Globug, may I suggest you consider Mesquite, NV over Las Vegas?

It's a wonderful little town about 1 1/4 drive (80 miles) North of Las Vegas heading to Utah.

And a golf lover's mecca.

Very uncrowded and civilized. High semi-retired/retired population.

Much more affordable housing vs. Vegas.

Great casinos including Casa Blanca, Virgin River, Oasis and a few others.

According to one lady poker player - Mesquite is a Poker player's Best Kept Secret.

Keep this place in mind, dear.

I second that!!! My aunt and uncle moved there from New Jersey a few years ago and just love it. They live right on the golf course and their house was very reasonable. Beautiful too!!! Still like small town living, but everything you might want in Vegas.

I say do it! I had that same feeling as you and I packed up my kids and moved there not knowing a soul and leaving my mom, sis, and grandma here in LA. It felt like home to me. I was involved in a car accident after living there for three years and came back to LA so my family could help me recover. I miss it sooo much. The whole time I lived there water was always talked about. I wouldn't worry about it. Housing is going up but it is still cheap. Food is awesome and cheap. Always something to do!

It's Vegas Baby!

My husband and I moved here 6 years ago from Cleveland Ohio where we were born and raised. As you can imagine we absolutely LOVE the weather! It certainly is different from "back east" in many respects. We do usually have one of the lowest unemployment rates in the country when the report comes out monthy. I work in a small company that is growing like crazy, let me tell you it is difficult to find good help! It is quite the transient town which makes things challenging. Real estate is outragous in Vegas, it's getting like California (Mesquite is a much better deal however it is out in the boonies, the casinos there are outdated), traffic is not so bad ....yet.

Some people don't last here very long, either you can deal with the excitement & uniqueness or you can't. Once the newness wears off you realize it's just another city, almost like where you came from. Honestly, I do miss my friends and family however, I would never move back! Keep in mind, since you live in (or near) Vegas, everyone will come to visit!!!!!

Please PM me if you have any questions, I promise to "tell it like it is". Oh - don't forget we have a small sweepers club out here so you will have some folks with a common interest waiting to meet you!

Best of Luck to you!

I grew up in Las Vegas and go back to visit family once in a while. It has changed so much! If you live in a large city now then you will have no problems.
I would suggest checking Mesquite Nevada or the St. George Utah area both are smaller but also nicer to live in. I am sure there are other smaller towns close to vegas that you can check on and you would save alot on the price of housing taxes etc. going with a smaller town. Since you are retiring you could just pop over to vegas whenever you wanted to. Remember that you can not go by the population of Las Vegas because the tourists are what keep it alive and there are lots of them.

Maybe you should look at a map and take a road trip checking out the smaller towns around Las Vegas just to get a feel for them and narrow it down to a few then choose between them and Las Vegas.

Good Luck

Thanks to all for the input! I was raised in large cities most of my life so, I can deal with all that. Traffic may get to me sometimes but I'll learn to deal with it.

We went online to check out apartments (we want to rent for right now instead of buying right off the bat) and most of them are beautiful and appear to be well maintained. The rents are comparable to the rents that you'd pay in other larger cities.

Glitz and glitter aside.... I'm sure that we will like it there. My DH plays golf and is excited that he'll get to play more when we move there. I am thrilled at the very idea of moving there. I love the hustle and bustle of the town and the fact there there is always something to do.

I'm sure that I'll miss my kids' and grandkids' ... but we've decided to get at least a 2 bedroom apartment ( if not 3!) since everyone is already making plans to visit us there ..... and we haven't even moved there yet!

YBNORMAL?..... I'll surely stay in touch with you! Would love to meet you when we move out there. It's nice to know that I already have one friend out that way!!!!

MY SO and I lived in Vegas. I didn't like it at all, but I am not big on gambling or golf, or heat! We rented an apartment on the west side heading towards red rock canyon and our 2 bdrm was about $950/mo when we left. It was a nice complex - well maintained and spacious. When we were there, 6k people were moving there a month. The school system was having a huge crisis. Water is definitely an issue in the long term especially if you ever buy property. Also, say hello to nuclear waste on the fault line in Yucca Mt. I will also say this: no matter what they pretend, Las Vegas is an extremely corrupt city. When you are dealing with casinos you may as well kiss your civil rights goodbye. :mad2:

On the other hand, if you like the heat and things like gambling and golfing, it might be a fun place to spend some time. It is definitely a new and interesting experience, if nothing else. My favorite part of Vegas was the food   Me after 2 years in LVNV---> :jump:
