A question for all the computer Techies out there. I just installed a 1394 firewire card in my desktop so I can transfer data from my laptop to my desktop I'm running XP HOME Ed on both systems (System 1 desktop is a Gateway Select 950 Mhz 512mb of ram 32mb video card ect.)
(System 2 is a Dell inspiron 8000 1Ghz 512mb of ram 32mb Video card ect.) The problem is I can get the laptop to recognize the desktop in the network, but can't get the Desktop to recognize the laptop in the network, any suggestions?
Thanks ubj

Can you connect to the computer directly - Start > Run then type the name of the computer you are trying to connect to in the Open dialog? Sometimes the network browser is a little stubborn.
If not then it could be an issue with the default firewall installed with ICS if you're using it. Likewise if you're using Zone Alarm or other software firewall on either computer you will need to make some adjustments. I stick to ethernet and 802.11b so I've nothing to offer specific to IEEE 1394. :(

I'm not very well versed in XP or firewire, but I have a few suggestions ....
First is to make sure the 2 computers are on the same Windows Domain or Workgroup. This should be somewhere in control panel/system properties/network id... probably hasn't moved too far in XP.
Second is make sure that there is a share defined on the computer that you can't 'see'. (In internet explorer, right click on the folder you want to share, and enter the Sharing dialog)
A final suggestion is to check your network protocols and make sure they match. I used to have the exact same problem you're having between a Windows 95 computer and a Windows NT computer over a null modem cable. Once I matched up the network protocols (ie. removed ones I wasn't using from one of them), the problem went away.
Good Luck, and I'd be very interested in finding out how you resolve this.
