I stay out of the politics forum, but this action affects my child directly and don't get me started on the battle I have had just trying to get help for her autism here in Florida. :mad2: I have even met with the big guys, and it did no good. I won't quit trying though. I just got this email from our CARD center. Please help if you can. :frown3:
LAST EVENING THE SENATE REDUCED THE AMOUNT OF THE REQUESTED INCREASE FOR THE CENTERS FOR AUTISM & RELATED DISABILITIES (CARD) FROM $600,000 TO $237,000.
THIS IS DISASTROUS FOR OUR CHILDREN AFFLICTED WITH THIS LIFELONG DISORDER.
PLEASE SUPPORT, AT THE VERY LEAST, THE HOUSE POSITION ($1.1 MILLION) FOR THE FUNDING INCREASE FOR THE CENTERS FOR AUTISM & RELATED DISABILITIES (CARD).
IN THE PAST 5 YEARS THERE HAS BEEN AN 88% INCREASE IN THE NUMBER OF CHILDREN DIAGNOSED WITH AUTISM AND NO INCREASE IN CARD FUNDING PLEASE DON'T HURT OUR CHILDREN BY IGNORING THEM FOR ANOTHER YEAR.
Remember to also tell these Senators and Representatives to distribute funds to ALL CARD centers, including FSU CARD! Currently, the Senate is not giving anything to FSU CARD and the House has less than $4000 going to FSU CARD. Remind Representative Alan Bense that his constituents are served by the FSU CARD office.

Best of luck to you on this, I hope Floridians back you on this one and some of them write to the governer and state reps. It's good that you are active in your child's life and care. Florida has a pretty dismal record on child welfare, and every day it seems like they take ten steps backwards.

a neighbor has an autistic daughter which she claims is as a result from early immunization vaccines. she is extremely active in the welfare of autistic children.
i wish you the best of luck in getting jeb bush to do something for the living, breathing, children of his state...... who deserves it more?

jesren, I know this isn't an ideal solution, and I am not sure of the details, but many sports figures have childrens' funds and some are specifically for Autistic children! Why not try to contact NFL and Nascar and tell them your story! I know several Nascar drivers have foundation, in fact Jeff Gordon has one! It won't hurt to check into it, and it wouldn't hurt for them to know the real attitudes behind our governor and our president! Just a thought!

Best of luck to you, jesren. Missouri has cut back drastically on Medicare and people are beginning to get out and protest. There is something seriously wrong with the current political situation when the wealthy get more and more tax breaks and those who have real needs get downsized. :frown3:

The REALLY sad thing is that "they" put all this energy into passing legislation for a woman in a persistant vegatative state to keep her alive and don't give a damn about the functional living :mad2:

Thank you to everyone for the support and the ideas. I will research them over the weekend and find out who to make noise to.
I can't begin to discuss the things I have been through TRYING to get her help. I have even sat in a room with the Asst. Atty General of FL in an appeal hearing and begged but they honestly don't care. :frown3: I know my dd is just one of many. Both of my girls are autistic and I know how the system tried to toss my oldest aside. It just infuriates me all over again.
They both have Cystic Fibrosis also and they tried to pass legislation to cut off their medical care at 21. They may not make it to 21 with that illness yet they feel it necessary to make cuts on that. :frown3:
I would love to meet with Governor Bush and let him see what our lives are like each day and how hard my dd has to struggle to do anything.
If it were their kids, I know this wouldn't be an issue. :frown2:
Lucky for me when I get angry, I get busy and do something. :bwhip:
Tiedieguy, when I read how you put things, that makes me furious to think about how much was done in that situation no matter that I wanted that woman to live, and yet nothing is done for our kids. You set me on fire with that. Thank you!

have you contacted the local tv stations? beside a story, many of them have a 'help me' person that takes causes on.
don't know if it'll work, but it's another avenue to explore.

Please let us know how your "campaign" goes, jesren. There are other people who visit the politics forum regularly who have kids/grandkids in similar situations. Aila's idea is a good one and I hope you also belong to a group of like-minded people who will help you work on the state. Have you contacted your state and federal representatives and asked for assistance?

I have been going through this actively for years now. But now that an opportunity has arisen and a brand new autism school is opening in a different city in Florida, I am going to get busier. I think awareness for autism is at a new high and hopefully other parents will join me.
My children deserve the same quality of life as other kids and the state should stop using "lack of funding" every year as an excuse.

My grandson was just diagnosed on 4/21 with Autism. His mother is contacting everyone about services he needs and deserves. Dean will be 3 next Friday.
I'm sure these cuts must be affecting all the states because of federal funding.
I wish you the best of luck. I know that my family is going to position ourselves against the wall and push as hard as we can.
Thanks so much for the links provided by everyone! :gvibes:

I am glad for your making connections. I'm sure you know the rate of autism and related disorders has increased greatly, and it isn't just due to beter screening. I really worry about families with kids who depend greatly on the government funding for support, and the school districts also that will be facing huge cut backs, the demands will be there, but not the funding.
Sometimes No Child Left Behind also puts very unrealistic expectations on children and teachers alike. WE like to say things like all children can succeed, but I think the success has to be geared toward the individual's realistic potential (IEP).
There are kids that learning to carry out some activities aof daily living is a major achievement, and a conventional test -even with added time is just crazy. Schools (and thereby our children) are sometimes penalyzed for this reality. NCLB is a lot of bull. http://www.rethinkingschools.org/special_reports/bushplan/index.shtml here is a link with some interesting articles on education and NCLB

You're absolutely right about the hypocrisy of those that tried to save Terri and yet are cutting programs for children with disabilities. But then the hypocrisy of the left's worrying about the lack of funding for people with disabilities, but failing to care about the basics like making sure that we aren't ending the lives of the disabled wrongly, doesn't seem any more attractive to me. So for those who want the disabled to be offered programs to help them lead full and happy lives, as well as legally protect them from being potentially euthanized without any documentation stating that this is what they would want for themselves, vote for Nader next time around and write to your congressmen to find out where they stand and how they will vote on these issues. And even more importantly, stay tuned into your local lawmakers and what they are doing.

Another resource I am contacting is Clay Aiken's foundation. He even had a big thing at a NY baseball stadium last year for autism.
