He is a conservative and a jerk. I remeber reading when - also in (Human Events?) he wrote a silly article complaining folks in Hollywood did not expess enough outrage at a Dutch film director's murder. It was a murder -in Europe- I remember hearing about it, and people were outraged and saddened as they are by many murders. Then he went on to turn it into a criticism of Michael Moore that made no sense at all, irrelevant.
He also of course does not address the lies of the conservative pundits, and just rants about the liberal media.
If there were no need for Air America Radio ; BushInc. would have been thrown out of office a long time ago, because more people would know and understand the truth.

Air America actually has listeners. I think the circus atmosphere of conservative hate radio is probably more entertaining, but Air America is intelligent talk, not spewing hatemongers. In the end you guys are going to lose and you are going to lose because you hate, hate motivates every single move you make.

Are you saying that NPR doesn't have listeners? Although you're apparently not one of them, lots of people are and the numbers are growing. NPR actually goes for quality rather than quantity.

Exceprt from: http://people-press.org/reports/display.php3?PageID=566
Demographically, regular NewsHour viewers and NPR listeners stand out for their level of education. Approximately one-third of them have a college degree, compared to 22% of the public.

The NPR audience grew substantially during the 1990s. In January 1990, 5% of Americans listened to NPR regularly. Today that number is 15%, with another 17% saying they sometimes tune in. About half of the public (49%) never listens to NPR, down significantly from 78% in 1990. Unlike many other mainstream news sources, NPR attracts as many young people as it does older ones: 15% of those under age 30 listen to NPR regularly; 13% of those over 65 do.

Four percent of the American public watches The NewsHour regularly, another 14% watch sometimes. NewsHour viewers are heavy consumers of network news, CNN, CNBC and MSNBC; 36% listen to NPR regularly. They are much more interested than the general public in news about political figures and events in Washington and in international affairs. More than half (51%) say they follow Washington political news very closely, compared to 19% of the public; 40% pay very close attention to international news vs. 16% of the public. Nonetheless, they also share the mass public's interest in community, health and crime news.

No, I am saying that Air America is lower in the ratings than the abandoned all-Caribbean format show that they replaced.

Possibly Air America's ratings are so low because liberals would rather think for themselves rather than be spoon-fed their views.

JarnocanME

that is kind of true- intelligent folks also tend not to watch TV as much either- hence somtimes TV shows that appeal to stupid people are more successful. Also liberal chuches sometimes are less well attended because liberals tend to be busy, and don't succomb to threats of damnation, even if liberal ministers did make them.

More evidence that Air America is one of the few media outlets. The Old American Century Project was founded in 2002 in response to a rigged election, reduced civil liberties, a hijacking of our domestic and foreign policies by the energy/defense industries, and a compliant corporate media that refused to make these problems prominent in our national consciousness.
We felt it our duty as patriots to create a web-based independent media outlet where we can not only debunk the myth of the liberal media but expose the corruption and cronyism taking place at the highest levels of government and corporate power. http://oldamericancentury.org/index.htm a great site!!!!

"So why do liberals fare so poorly on air? Some on the left say it's because liberals are, well, smarter and can't convey their sophisticated ideas to the rubes who listen to talk radio. Former New York Gov. Mario Cuomo, whose own stint as a talk-show host was a ratings disaster, gave canonical expression to this self-serving view. Conservatives "write their messages with crayons," he maintained. "We use fine-point quills."

Yet even if we were to grant the premise that conservative talk radio can sometimes be crudely simplistic--a tough charge to make stick against, say, one-time philosophy professor Bennett or Clarence Thomas' former law clerk Laura Ingraham--how can anyone plausibly believe the right has a monopoly on misleading argument? Moreover, talk-show fans aren't dummies. Industry surveys show that talk-radio fans vote in greater percentages than the general public, tend to be college-educated and read more magazines and newspapers than the average American"

Well I don't know, with Jerry Springer being their latest "voice" they may just increase their listener ratings  Trash radio to go along with his reputation for trash TV.
Just nine weeks after launching a local talk radio show on WCKY-AM (1530), the former Cincinnati mayor turned TV anchor turned trash TV phenomenon is suddenly a national talk radio figure.

Springer's Cincinnati-based radio show, which began when the Clear Channel-owned station switched from an oldies format to liberal talk in January, has been picked up by Air America Radio, the year-old liberal talk network now in over 50 markets.

Springer has signed a deal with Air America to air his show from 9 a.m. to noon weekdays nationwide beginning April 1.

I think Air America has a real future.

Sure, they lack the sensationalism and sheer entertainment value of a Hannity or Limbaugh, but aren't we ready for something a little more substantive anyway? Who wants to listen to that pendantic drivel all day anyway?

For anyone who is interested, they stream live on their website. Here's what's on now:
Jeff Sharlet joins Janeane Garofalo and Sam Seder for a discussion about his new Harper's article titled, "Soldiers of Christ". He takes readers inside America's most powerful megachurch, New Life in Colorado Springs, whose pastor, Ted Haggard, who speaks to President Bush every Monday, preaches a "free-market" brand of Christian fundamentalism to his congregation's 11,000 members. Ted leads 40 million members of the National Association of Evangelicals. Plus, Barry W. Lynn, executive director of Americans United for the separation of Church and State stops by to talk about "Justice Sunday".

As much as I'm sure Bill O'Reilly's fascinating rant about how Maggie Gylenhall is the anti-Christ will be illuminating, the Air America show seems much more meaty.

I have "followers?"

And I'm "stalking" you?

Why wouldn't I have my "followers" "stalk" you? That would seem to put me at less risk, as well as a satisfying use of my "power."

No, I'm afraid you just aren't making much sense with that one. However, persecution complexes can be helped, if one is only willing to seek it.

igot up this morning , have on 'air america'.... sitting at the computer with my coffee when i find on another thread a statement i made was so taken out of context by another ols-er, it was shameful how that other poster interpreted it.

then i come here and am trying to follow this thread and and it's going from stalking to cows and ducks and house painting, grocery shopping, and janet jackson. talk about confusion!

all i can say is i just had my house painted and dandy, if i knew you were into painting, i could have saved a heck of a lot of $$$. how are you at weed pulling? or do i have to go through hort first?

back to air america/progressive radio! if you don't like it, don't listen, but you can't not like it until you listen first. i don't like al franken..... can't listen to him. jerry springer and ed schultz are great. it's worth a listen. they don't preach. they do understand that there are 2 sides and we need a 2 sided government..... unlike the lumbaugh's, hannity's, ingrahams, coulter...... who feel that this government should only be run by one party. you know what that is, don't you?

I enjoy Al Franken - I guess I connect with the dry humor. Ed is not really an Air America guy, but stations carrying Air America may carry Ed too.

I love Randi Rhodes. She shoots from the hip a bit, but it is interesting to get a perspective from someone who watches C-SPAN for fun. :) Jerry is fun as well. A pretty mellow guy. I keep waiting for him to get upset about something but he is always so damn pleasant.

I mean really - don't these people have any dignity? I'm not sure that I want my good name associated with "followers" - sounds too close to "camp follower," and I'm just not seeing that as a good thing in terms of PR.

The ratings also show WABC radio, which airs Rush Limbaugh, consistently beating Air America in New York City even though Franken had at one time claimed to be beating the conservative host there. In the 10 a.m. to 3 P.M. period in the Winter of 2005, WABC (and Limbaugh) won 2.7 percent of the audience to Air America's 1.4 percent. In Spring 2004, WABC beat Air America 2.7 percent to 2.2 percent. In Summer 2004, WABC won 2.7 percent to 2.3 percent. In Fall 2004, WABC won 3.6 percent to 1.6 percent.

That last number surprised some observers because it showed Air America faltering in October and November 2004, the period when the presidential election was reaching its finish and political passions were presumably at their highest. But even then, Air America's decline continued. And now, it has fallen even farther.

The name of the thread is Dead Air America. So what does escapism have to do with it's decline? If you want to escape from reality, don't listen to Air america Radio. Occasionally it can be funny, but it isn't escapism , it can be painfully REAL!
So that's why a desire by Americans to escape reality- perhaps because they have given up on; democracy, fairness and are feeling somewhat hopeless, and therefore less inclined to listen to Air America , could result in a decline in listeners, :gvibes:
The decline of neoconservatism, and fanatacism would be a positive sign, so maybe we shouldn't give up quite yet.

Sure people listen to Rush...who'd want to miss it when he lets loose with gems like these:

On homosexuality: "When a gay person turns his back on you, it's anything but an insult - it's an invitation. The difference between Los Angeles and yogurt is that yogurt comes with less fruit."

On the homeless: "One of the things I want to do before I die is conduct the Homeless Olympics. The 10-meter Shopping Cart Relay, the Dumpster Dig, and the Hop, Skip and Trip."

On NAFTA: "If we are going to start rewarding no skills and stupid people--I'm serious, let the unskilled jobs, let the kinds of jobs that take absolutely no knowledge whatsoever to do--let stupid and unskilled Mexicans do that work."

On Native Americans: "There are more American Indians alive today than there were when Columbus arrived or at any other time in history. Does this sound like a record of Genocide?"

On feminism: "Feminism was established to allow unattractive women easier access to the mainstream. Women were doing quite well in this country before feminism came along."

On feminazis: "Militant feminists are pro-choice because it's their ultimate avenue of power over men... It is their attempt to impose their will on the rest of society, particularly on men."

On corporate layoffs: "Why is it that whenever a corporation fires workers, it's never speculated that the workers might have deserved it?"

On Kurt Cobain: "Kurt Cobain was, ladies and gentleman, was a worthless shred of human debris."

Speculating as to how a Mexican won the New York marathon: "An immigration agent chased him for the last 10 miles."

"I don't consider myself an offensive guy. I'm just a harmless, lovable little fuzzball."

I hear ya!

Oh - and for a reality check on Air America, I thought this was rather encouraging - I guess it is all in how you spin it. :)
From April 5, 2005 - marking about one year since launch:

But Air America Radio has achieved something significant: survival. As poignantly revealed in the HBO documentary Left of the Dial, the network had to endure media scorn, its own amateur flounderings and, nearly, financial ruin. Yet it is still on the air — not in three big cities (New York, Los Angeles, Chicago) and three smaller ones, as it was when it went on the air, and not on the severely reduced network it became two weeks later (after bounced checks led to L.A. and Chicago dropping out), but on 52 stations, including 15 of the top 20 markets (L.A. is back, Chicago still MIA). It has added Sirius Satellite Radio to its original XM satellite connection. In February, AAR inked a deal with industry behemoth Clear Channel, which put the network back in L.A., and which plans to bring the Air America format to 25 of its lower-rated AM affiliates.

Clear Channel, a major funder of Bush and the Republicans, isn't a liberal philanthropy. It's picking up "progressive radio" because this is the fastest growing format in the country; and that is because Air America has proved it attracts listeners and advertisers. From an original audience of 120,000, the network more than tripled to 400,000 within three months, and now, according to the latest Arbitron ratings, reaches 2.137 million listeners a week, with 129,900 tuning in for the average quarter hour. Now and again, at least in New York City, Franken's midday show has out-pulled his right-wing nemesis Bill O'Reilly's; Randi Rhodes has lured more listeners than Hannity; Garofalo and Seder topped the rabid Michael Savage.

And, as Carolina Miranda reported for an item I wrote in the Apr. 4 issue of TIME, AAR is enjoying monthly double-digit ballooning in ad sales revenue — a rate that Jon Sinton, AAR's president, expects to continue for the next two years. Commercials for national brands like Geico and Volkswagen can now be heard along with spots for Verbal Advantage vocabulary builders (one of Limbaugh's early sponsors), sexual potency pills and "clinical hypnotherapist" Wendi Friesen's promises of happiness, weight loss and freedom from nicotine addiction if you'll just let her talk in your sleep.

Other stats are encouraging and amusing. Ratings show a younger, more diverse audience. "The average talk-radio listener is 60 years old, but the average Air America listener is 48," Sinton told Carolina, adding that during nighttime programming, "in a format that is generally two-thirds male and one third female, Air America is 52/48. We are almost precisely evenly balanced between men and women." The network is also doing well in terms of brand recognition. A study issued last month by the consulting firm Paragon Media Strategies indicates that Limbaugh's is the name most familiar to talk radio listeners, followed by — drum roll, please — Al Franken.

Well, hort provides all manner of interesting and entertaining posts and is very, very clever! But MrDave promised me control of Ireland a long time ago, so I know which way I'm leaning. MrDave also doesn't send underlings off to paint other people's houses . . . And, of course, he's also very interesting, entertaining, and clever. I think we'd better stick with the devil we know (so to speak). :cheer7:

Sorry, hort, a very short reign! But there are elections coming up again in 2006! You need to get those campaign promises in order.

Which point would that be? That Air America has a future and is not infact irrelevant or "dead" as the original post posits, or that you are in fact a very angry person who hides snide bitter little jabs with random smilies? Because right now, I'm inclined to believe both to be true. Glad to be playing along, kiddie.
Nicely concluded, Faulkner.

This paragraph is interesting...

Air America has taken the marginalized and hopelessly humanistic liberal population and turned it into its own worst enemy: an insipid mess of paranoid people who see the world in truncated stereotypes and oppositions.

The author seems like a liberal. Even he wants Air America to fail.

The Air America station in my area is seems to be on more and more solid footing, judging by the increased advertising I here. For a time it was mostly PSA's. Plenty of national as well as local accounts now. We had something to frame and took it to a shop that advertises; we made sure to thank them for their support.

While driving, I often tune into rightwing shows for a few minutes. The difference is clear. Those shows have one unrelenting message - hate other people. Hate the poor. Hate the muslims. Hate Europe. Hate democrats. Hate educators. Hate government. Hate people of other faiths. Hate everyone who isn't exactly the same. Fear everyone.

I don't get the same vibe from Air America programs. I find them humorous and positive. It's a refreshing difference.

Yup, you nailed it. Like I said before, it's so much easier to rally people around a simplistic message of hate. Air America, when I listen to it has plenty of advertisers and never dead air for lack of callers either I think it takes time for thoughtful messages to get through. Knee-jerk seems to be the battle cry of the day. I have hope that more people will heed the call of peace and justice.

Well I have always supported MrDave even when he was the Evil Drager. I think the power has gone to your head dear DUcky and if that will cause any harm to MrDave, you better be careful. :worry:

Those who love their country always fight to own it! Er . . . to get more oil? Or something. I have to go out and do something immoral now. Hopefully MrDave will quell this quasi-revolution.

Oh that funny funny Air America!!! They are such a hoot!!

NEW YORK (UPI) -- The liberal Air America radio show has apologized for a broadcast that simulated shooting President Bush with a shotgun for his Social Security policies.

Host Randi Rhodes apologized for "bad taste" in Monday's routine in which she began by saying, "A spoiled child (Bush) is telling us our Social Security isn't safe anymore, so he's going fix it for us.Well, here's your answer, you ungrateful whelp."

The sound of three shotgun blasts followed, the New York Post reported Thursday.

"I apologize a thousand times," Rhodes said Wednesday on WLIB-AM, New York.

A spokesman for Air America, Jon Sinton, added, "Our normal vetting process failed ...and we regret it."

You are all in trouble, and must be disciplined. I will be taking matters firmly in hand and administering all that is deserved (if anyone shows up at the Inner Sanctum, that is. This time there are no excuses).
