Let the fence-mending begin. According to a Broadcasting & Cable source in Washington, D.C., CBS News president Andrew Heyward, along with Washington bureau chief Janet Leissner, recently met with White House communications director Dan Bartlett, in part to repair chilly relations with the Bush administration.

CBS News’ popularity at the White House—never high to begin with—plunged further in the wake of Dan Rather’s discredited 60 Minutes story on George Bush’s National Guard service.

An incentive for making nice is the impending report from the two-member panel investigating CBS's use of now-infamous documents for the 60 Minutes piece.

Heyward was “working overtime to convince Bartlett that neither CBS News nor Rather had a vendetta against the White House,” our source says, “and from here on out would do everything it could to be fair and balanced.” CBS declined to comment.

I've noticed an alarming absence of criticism for the Bush Admin. as of late. Not only is the criticism absent, but even the reporting of stories that might shine a negative light on Bush, his policies, or the war are becoming scarce. I have to question the idea of being "fair and balanced." What if the politics aren't "fair?" What if the news isn't "balanced?" (more bad than good). CNN use to be so good at reporting against Bush politics. They never came out and said it--We think Bush is an ass.--but it was there. They do still get a shot in now and then, but you have to look real close. On New Years day, they covered a story about the celebration of US troops in Iraq. On screen, US soldiers literally moshing to a heavy metal group called The Vandals.

Do you think they might be figuring out that Hate America, Bush Bashing liberal leaning newscasts are bringing them down in the ratings? Even liberal biased news networks have to have a following to survive. I'm sure there will be more lamenting from the left over this.

Just to make sure we're clear--I'm not from the left. Right now, what "liberal biased news networks" need to survive is Bush-approval.

There is a huge difference between hate of "government" and hate of country. I'd say the opposite is true, you love your government and hate your country

This is a cocern, because our democracy relies on an educated electorate. If all we have are softball reporters, then there really is no public debate but for those commited to hunting down news sources they can trust not to tow the government line and actually provide some critical assessment.

Exactly. Give me the Foxy, Bush-lovin BS along with the Chicken Noodle News and let me decide. I'm beginning to like CNN just for their creative use of venues. A few days ago, they were airing an interview with a US military official in Iraq. I have no idea what he was saying because I was too busy laughing. Behind him was an old, wood paneled wall with nothing on it except a sports pennant for the Devils.

The Vandals aren't heavy metal, they're Punk Rock.

No what 'liberal biased news networks' need to survive is to tell the truth for a change.

How can a news medium be truly free when the government has the power to arbitrarily fine their parent corporation millions of dollars.

That would surely do it. If they actually dug down into the Bush Administration, goodbye Bush, goodbye worries about retaliation.

This is probably a moot point anyway as cBS News is much less relevant in the cable news and internet age. But, it's nice to see them grovel anyway.

Really? Too bad all they can do is fabricate. I believe telling lies on Pres. Bush is the reason Dan Rather is getting the axe.

  Oh and I might add there is a bit of a difference geographically between "America" and the United States. By your definition, I've always been an "American" as America is a contintent which includes a number of countries besides the United States, including Canada where I was born :cool2:

That's true. In Latin America they find it weird that we "Americans" call ourselves that since we are all Americans. In Costa Rica, at least, they call us Northern Americans or North Americans. THey find it funny that the US has laid claimed to the "American" label.
