View Full Version : GentWorld - OLS Affliation?

I am a new, but enthusiastic supporter of OLS. I have been impressed by the web site performance, the spirit of the user community and the volume of sweepstakes & contests. That as a precursor, I am a bit surprised to have come across my first OLS banner ad...at www.Gentworld.com, on both their "links" page and "win a trip to Las Vegas" page. Not only is this a website that is of very poor quality, it also appears to be a bit tackier (sleazier) than anything with which I would have anticipated OLS would affliate.

I didn't see anything. I remember once I pm'd the moderator because I kept getting pop-ups that said "OLS wants you to ..................". I know there are no OLS popups. Turns out I had a virus or something on my computer. I think that's what happened to you. Run your adaware or whatever you have and I bet it won't be there anymore.

Unless, of course, you just wanted us to check out that website!!!!

Yuck! I saw the banner on the Links page. The banner seems really out of place there -- considering the content of the other sites. I hope OLS isn't affiliated with that site but it's a free country, I guess... :worry:

We are not affiliated with GentWorld. :worry: Ugh!

The day that sweeps was posted, the Editors and Moderators debated whether the sleaze factor rendered it something we don't want listed here. In looking over that website we were also amazed to see that banner. To the best of our knowledge (Brent hasn't told us yes or no)...and I'd be amazed if this were incorrect...it is simply a banner link Gentworld grabbed without any permission or communication with us. :sherlock:

The person who posted the contest joined the day he posted it, and hasn't visited again since. I'd suppose he works for that company, and they are basically just trying to get the word out. Nevertheless, that contest is not currently listed here (the original post is "hidden" in our archives). We have had a variety of, uh, colorful contests (trips to nudist resorts, condoms, etc.) but we try to remain basically a safe and wholesome place.

Hope that addresses your concern (and what were you doing visiting that site anyway? LOL)

I saw it too--now I must ask what were YOU doing on that site? :sherlock: j/k!

Wow is all I have to say because I never even knew OLS had banner ads on the internet and YUCK to have it at THAT place right along with porn banners. (No prude, just don't see the connection).

Gcomstock, Mommyoftwins -- Why was I at the site? Good question...but not the titillation one probably anticipates. I had added the Las vegas trip to MySweeps when it first posted. I went in to enter the contest, and saw the ad. So...can't deny that I love trips to Vegas...can't deny that I would really like to win one...can't even deny that I stray significantly from an altar boy life at times. :halo: But, at the end of the day, I was on that site because it had been posted on OLS.

p.s. Thrilled to hear that OLS does not do banner ads, much less ads at sites of that type.

Thanks for the responses!

Yes we are an adult male oriented site, but we are not a porn site. When we found your site, we didn't see any clear restrictions or guidelines as to who could join and or post sweeps. According to your sweeps submission rules/guidelines it states that we should put up a link back to OLS, which we did. So I'm not sure what permission you are referring to below. Besides no one from OLS contacted us to let us know that the Editors had decided to remove the listing and that we should remove the link back to OLS. We have updated our links page and removed the link to OLS. We are sorry for any inconvenience we may have caused your members. That was not our intentions. Perhaps you should update your submission guidelines to clearly state that you will not allow any entries from any adult oriented sites.

Finally, I did come back a couple of times to visit the site and forums. That is how I eventually realized that the entry was deleted. You should double check your logs. I do like your community and wish you folks all the success in the world.

Sincerely,
Ray

That's a pretty sneaky thing to do to get someone to look at your website. See, I guess I was right!!!! Don't be surprised if you get a lot of bad reaction because of that move.

Why would say that about your own website?

Dear OLS community, OLS is in no way associated with GentWorld.com. We had found the site and thought it would be a great place to promote our sweeps. We didn't see any restictions, so we went ahead and posted the sweeps. OLS quickly removed our entry. So please do not hold them responsible. OLS is a great community! It was our error. We probably should have asked first if it was OK to list our type of sweeps. As for the link/banner, we did that as a reciprocal link, which is required when submitting any sweeps. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Sincerely,
Ray

What did I say about my own website? That quote is not mine. Eveyrone has their opinion as to was is poor quality or sleazy. I respect your opinion. Hopefully, people are more understanding and realize that we made a mistake due to the lack of clear information.

I visited the home page of gentworld because of this thread. I don't see anything wrong or sleazy there. I will check the site out further when I get home from work, but I thought it was well done.

mrsmallia I read it the way you did at first too but its not the original posters banner.
He was saying its the first time hes run into a banner at OLS.
I know it looked to me like he was saying he ran into his first banner here..lol
But once I read and reread all the posts I understood what he meant.

The banner belongs to raytony.

And I have to agree with the above poster.
I don't think it looks sleazy to me.
But I don't think it belongs at a sweeps site either, unless we have an adult sweeps section.

Appreciate your stepping up and setting the record straight!

You certainly didn't violate any rules in submitting your sweepstakes here, or by wanting to promote your website by doing so. The guidelines by which the moderators chose to delete that sweepstakes often require judgement calls. Believe me we get stuff that is way past "borderline." And by referencing "sleaze factor" I obviously wasn't thinking you're listening. Frankly, as an adult male myself I have maybe more respect for "sleaze" than is reflected in our moderating.

It just seems that we are trying to be a bit more "family" oriented in the decision.

Anyway, thanks again for clarifying. ~Geo.

I understand they are two different posters - but that poster's very first post obviously wanted us to go check out the site. Then all of a sudden, someone from that site posts here. I still say he was from that company too. That's my story, and I'm sticking to it.

I saw nothing wrong with the site, or its sweeps (really nice sweeps actually). the only thing I did not like was when attempting to sign up, it the site asks for paypal info (and I do not like that) so I stopped at that point, as I do not think any sweep needs to know my paypal info!
