View Full Version : slicing cukes lengthwise

Hello! There's a recipe I want to make that calls for very thin slices of cucumber. Instead of the usual way cukes are cut, these are cut lengthwise. I have been trying to cut them this way but they end up too thick. What sort of utensil/device can be used to cut cukes in uniform, thin slices this way? :smile9:

Thanks for any help!

I've used a cheese slicer.... see if that works. Particularly a backwards-slicing (European-style) cheese slicer! Good luck! :)

You could use a potato peeler.

I got a pretty good one at Tupperware, I'm sure it would work on cucumber.

Get a Mandoline (it's a french slicer thing, not the instrument!). You can adjust the thickness to whatever you desire. It's flat, about the length of a sheet of paper and half as wide with a very very sharp blade in the center. You just slide the veggie along the flat surface towards the balde. There is a dial on the side to adjust the height of the blade. The nice metal ones are pretty pricey, but you can find cheaper plastic models.

Here - see?? I have one and use it ALL the time. Mine is about as old as I am though.

Thanks for the ideas!! I appreciate it. I saw this dish on one of Rachael Ray's $40 a Day shows and am looking forward to attempting to make it :)
