I love those which inspire debate, are subject to interpretation and lots of thought. I have seen Momento, Mullholland Drive, The Usual Suspects and Swimming Pool.

Any other good ones?

I LOVE puzzle movies!!!!!

I've seen all of the above mentioned flicks, but my all time favorite "puzzle movie" is "Donnie Darko". It's a twisted brain tease that will have you talking for days afterward. Rent it!

(It doesn't hurt that Jake Gyllenhall is the cutest actor on the planet... grrrrrrr......)

The Usual Suspects, which you mentioned, is one of the best puzzle movies I can remember. Identity is a pretty good recent one. Videodrome and eXistenZ are pretty good, also.

it's MEMENTO, not momento! :)

i'm not sure exactly what you mean by "puzzle movies" but off of the top of my head, some other good movies that make you think are: seven, brazil, adaptation, eternal sunshine of the spotless mind, the game, taking lives, 12 monkeys

I just watched Donnie Darko, and loved it! Thanks for that suggestion, as I will be dissecting the tar out of it and watching it thirty more times (or so) :)

Any other really good ones? That are fair, but make your brain smoke??

Thanks!

Christine :)

Hey Christine,

I'm really glad you took the plunge into "Donnie Darko." It's an amazing piece of filmmaking, ain't it? So satisfying on so many levels, and keeps your brain working, trying to process all of its metaphysical implications.

As for others, you seem ready to take the David Lynch plunge. You said you had already seen "Mullholland Drive," which is good Lynch, but not him at his best. To do him properly, start with "Blue Velvet," which is his masterpiece. "Wild at Heart" should come next. His trippiest film is "Lost Highway," where he plunges so far off the deep end that I've never been able to figure out the logic to the film (if there actually is any).

After those, you'll be ready to conquer "Twin Peaks." The whole series is available on DVD, and it's 42 hours of bliss for someone who loves art that makes you think.

I'd love to hear your thoughts about "Donnie Darko" and any other puzzle movies you want to chat about. It's my absolute favorite genre of filmmaking, and it's nice to meet another fan.

Of course you cant mention puzzle movies without mentioning The Usual Suspects,As for Donnie Darko,I really enjoyed it also,it makes you go wait a minute what just happened here,I had to watch it again to see if I had missed anything, its a dark movie(no pun intended)thats very well made and acted.

I loved the Usual Suspects! I have to say Donnie Darko does have a "what just happened here" moment. I realized after that moment, that I need to rewatch the entire movie! I found it dark, but with a strange underlying truthfulness to it. I can analyze this type of movie to death, and love every minute of it!

I just rented Blue Velvet and Lost Highway!

I dont know if this is classified as a puzzle movie and its wasnt a big movie but its called Sliding Door with Gwyneth Paltrow, its just a movie about destiny or fate or whatever you want to call it,its about a lady who one day catches a subway train and what happens to her,and then it shows what would have happened to her if she had missed the subway that day.A lot of people didnt like the movie but I thought it was ok.

Loved Sliding Doors! I thought it was well done, and original. I don't know if it is exactly a puzzle movie, but it sure inspires thought!!

I don't know if this fits in the category but here were some of my favorites:

"Dragonfly" with Kevin Costner

"What Lies Beneath" with Harrison Ford (so unusual for his character).

Both these were quite symbolic.

I dont know if you can consider "Fight Club" a puzzle movie, but it is a love hate kind of movie, and if its love for you, you have to watch it a few times to take it all in.

RED* WHITE *BLUE They are a french trilogy. I forget which title is first and so on but they are labeled on the description. I found them by accident in the foreign section and watched Red first and then watched the other two.

Another movie that creeped me out was Winter Lilly. It is supose to be one of a series but i havn't come across the others in it.

"Identity" with John Cusack.

And I still haven't figured out "The Matrix" completely after a half dozen viewings.

These have already been mentioned, but they are worth repeating in hopes that you will check them out: Identity, The Hole ( I thought it would be a "tween" movie, was pleasantly surpised), The Secret Window.

If you like Freudian/surrealistic puzzles, then you would enjoy the films of Luis Bunuel. They are French films in subtitles but they are very enjoyable. Some of them include <The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeousie> and <Belle du Jour>.
