I'll explain it very simply so even you can understand it. The rich get richer the poor get poorer

Did ya'll hear? Today, the chairman of the Federal Reserve, Alan Greenspan, suggested to Congress that since we have such a terrible budget deficit, Social Security benefits should be cut for future retirees.

Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but we used to have a budget surplus, didn't we?

Didn't this surplus evaporate because we had to have tax cuts for the rich?

Aren't the rich ones the ones who don't really need Social Security?

Isn't it the poor and middle class who are getting scr*wed yet again?

Snerk. Thanks for the chortle!

Mary Beth, that announcement today was very sobering, indeed. I hope the American people get it come November.

I don't know about the rich getting richer or the poor getting poorer...a $400 tax credit which was actually an advance on next year's deduction...isn't a whole lot to a family paying out over 30k-40k a year in taxes. In some parts of this country 100k to 150k a year in family income means that you are middle class and probably struggling to make rent or mortgage and day care payments. There are no easy answers to the budget crisis in this country....somewhere someone will be suffering...no doubt about it... but to take something away based on one magic number is not the answer since income and cost of living from one area to the next is so dramatic. My mother makes $8.50 an hour in FL in a senior position to do the same job that pays $25 an hour entry level to do here in MA...but she just bought a beautiful 3 bedroom house for 50k...I can't even look at a a two bedroom fixer-upper on a postage stamp sized lot for less than 270-300k here.

Good points Mary Beth, that's history, hopefully, we won't forget when we get to make another choice.
