Got this letter today. To paraphrase:

It is my pleasure to inform you that your academic performance has qualified your for membership in Phi Theta Kappa. This is a distinct honor and you are to be commended for your achievement. Phi Theta Kappa is the only nationally recognized honor socety for American Community and Junior Colleges......if you decide to join, there are one time membership dues of $53 that are due at the time of yourapplication.....

Is this a good idea? It's expensive...but is it worth joining for my resume or other reasons? Do you know anything about it? And what if my grades fall (I cried during my first Business Law test--studied like a demon and my mind went blank looking at the legal language and I couldn't remember a thing. haven't gotten my grade on it yet)?

Help!

Tignor:

First, congratulations! Second, if you have the cash, definitely do it. I joined one honors fraternity in my undergrad, and one in law school. It sets you apart on your resume, and some give scholarships as well.

~Beth

I forgot to say that once you are a member, you remain a member. Grades falling below an average won't get you kicked out.

YES!!!! It is a distinctive honor to be a member of an honor society and will throw glowing marks on your resume. If you can afford it, do it. And Congratulations, I have two kids in college and would LOVE for them to be honored, but alas......C's don't normally make it. Oh well...

I'm a member of Phi Theta Kappa. I've been a member since April 2000. It's a distinct honor for academic achievement in a 2-year college program. Here's the link http://www.ptk.org/
Congrats!

Thank you! I was really torn as to if it would be worth it. I will at least go to the meeting and see what it's all about. and thanks for the website link!

Congrats! My son is in that same honor society, and among the benefits are future scholarships, some colleges waive the application fee for transfer, and of course it looks good on resumes and applications.
