Ok, this could be sticky but I'm throwing it out there. My family of 4 will be going to a Bat Mitzvah this month and I'm not sure what an appropriate gift is. The girl/family used to live in our development and they moved 5 years ago. We have remained in touch and usually see each other 3 -4 times per year through a mutual friend. Does anyone have any suggestions as to a dollar amount to give?

I went to a Bat Mitzvah for twins last year and I want to say that I gave each girl $13. I know it sounds cheap but a friend of mine who is Jewish said that the number has meaning and is often a gift amount. Sorry I can't give you exacts!!!

You can go with no monetary gift and have a tree (or two) planted in their name. The JNF is having a buy X/get 1 free in honor of Tu B'Shevat. - http://www.jnf.org/site/PageServer?pagename=trees_tu_bshevat
Also, from what I know of tradition, the magic number is 18. The hebrew word for life (Chai in english), represents 18 and therefore multiples of 18 is considered to be a "blessing" for life. so the typical monetary gift would be in multiples of 18, ie... $18 or $36 or $54 etc etc
Have fun!!
