My refrigerator broke today, so as my hubby and I are transfering veggies out of it, he jumps back with an "Oh Sh*t!" And there is a tiny frog inside the veggie compartment of my fridge!!!
WHat the ..????
I wonder where HE came from??? I live in Germany, and am on a military base, and our veggies come from all over the world.
SO I put him into a bowl, where once he warmed up he escaped, but we found him and put him in a terrarium/aquarium. I can't toss him outside, I think it is too cold for him. SO any advice would be great. I do not know what kind he is but here is the description, uh, green, OK a pretty green with a (muted) red outline and underside. And he is the size of my thumb.
Crazy, huh? :yesyes:

Is he red and black underneith?? If so he is a toad, a fire bellied toad.
I LOVE frogs, and have a FROG bathroom, complete with 5 terrariums filled with frogs lol.
PM me if you need any help with him.... I have lots of experiance.
Kinda odd that you found him in your fridge.
Also, what is the temp. there??

Thanks Pharaoh, I can't think of any Egyptian frog gods...but thanks anyway.
Jodimae, After a few minutes of looking, he seems to look like the common tree frog, except the descriptions have him with a cream colored outline, not red. And I havent seen a picture yet of the European tree frog. It is very cold and rainy here, frosty in the mornings, but not snowy, although it could happen.
I guess I need to go to the store and buy him some food, huh? He dosen't look like he could tackle a cricket, but is that what I should get him???

ICK! Spiders are my paranoia (arachniphobia), however i'm not too fond of reptiles of any kind either. If I found one in my freezer, he could darn well have everything in there. I'm thinking i'd set the whole fridge outside till someone could haul it off. Sorry I don't have any other advice. Good luck! :eek2:

Well that is cool that you didn't fry him up and you are going to the store to get something to feed him.

Just don't lick him, remember what happened to Homer Simpson when he licked the toad......

It is hard to believe he lived in the fridge...must be a tough little guy.

Good luck with your new pet!

Heather

BTW: your name cracks me up everytime I see it....LOL

Oooh when I was a kid I used to love tree frogs. I used to catch flies to feed them (our terrarium had a lid). I think they used to eat meal worms too. One odd thing I remember - if you feed a tree frog a lightning bug when the bug lights you can see all of the veins and the heart pumping in the frog. The frog will spit it out though, apparently they don't taste good. (I should add that I love lightning bugs and wouldn't do this now, I was just a kid.)

What an interesting story and a neat little pet you have!

Any kind of crawling bug will fill him up. I catch mine worms, and rolly pollies, and stuff. Hubby feeds them spiders. I would suggest putting him in a land type environment. Don't use potting soil with any additives though. I would put a bowl of water in his environment.
Does he have webbed feet ? If so he is a water frog, and needs more water then land.
That is a common death to frogs, people associate them with water, and put them in an environment with water, and no land .... That is a BIG no no...
Anyway good luck with the little lad... little lad lol....
If you need any advise, feel free to pm me... and your right about putting him outside.... he would get tooo cold lol.
friggy the froggy : )

that story it too funny. Glad it wasn't my house. My hubby would have had a heart attack for sure...he is absolutely petrified of frogs no matter what the size

Good luck with your new little friend! Sounds like a lucky frog!

Do these guys need special lights to keep them warm, or is house temp good enough? I agree about the part land or gravel and some water in a bowl that you can take out to clean. Does she need to put in a branch for froggy to use to get out of the bowl? Lots of questions--no idea. I never had a frog. A friend keeps a couple of huge bullfrogs and they eat crickets from the pet store. One of them likes to be held and have his head rubbed. He has a different croak when he is being petted.

How is your new friend doing?? Do you still have him? Find out what he eats?

We need an update!!

Well, here is the update.
I have looked online and went to the pet store, and talked to my vet about him, so we are doing OK. I spend a lot of time looking for him in the cage, but once I find him, he is boring, I found out that he is nocturnal, so that answers that question.
I bought meal worms (THOSE I keep in the fridge!) and he wasn't going for them, so now this is day two of baby crickets. I preferred the site of the worms myself. I know I put 3 in the cage ( he is to be fed daily), but they are lost in the giant 25 gallon aquarium.
He is on smooth rocks, has a shallow pan of water, I will mist him occasionally, I have cleaned branches bought in from the outside for him to climb, and a heat lamp just to warm the tank for a few hours, but he does not sit directly under it. He IS an american tree frog, so he has suction cup round finers/toes, and can cling to anything, and for being so small (2-4 inches) they can jump 8-10 feet.
He may still be in a winter mode (no doubt from my refrigerator), or still in shock (since he was hanging out in the real world last week!), but I look at him daily, and will try not to bother him too much, at least for a while.
My Newfoundland dog is wondering why I am staring at a big glass cage, he can't see Chilly Willy, or Tiney, or Junior, or whatever I name him. And I am currently interviewing the next family for him ( in captivity they can live 20 years....20 YEARS!!!!!). When I move back to the US in April, he can't come.
Thanks for your intrest in him! :cheer7:
